Filtering dust is merely the beginning; after attaining such a state of mind, one must further sit in meditation to regulate one’s energy and reach a state of self-forgetfulness. When one’s heart becomes as subtle as dust at the bottom of a lake, then it is accomplished. At this point, the world resembles a clear lake, its surface as smooth as a mirror of the heart. Everything within a thousand miles that one wishes to see is reflected in this mirror—this is the mastery of distant vision.

- Volume 2: The Way That Can Be Told Chapter 97: Deceptive Acts After walking a few more steps, he saw a child holding a hot bun, standing in a corner and eating it with relish. The child seemed oblivious to anything else, completely focused on the hot bun. Seeing this, Wukong felt a long-lost sense of happiness and unconsciously stood aside to watch. Just then, a vicious dog suddenly rushed out of a narrow alley. The dog was extremely thin, with eyes glowing faintly green; clearly starving, it lunged straight at the bun in the child’s hands. The child was still unaware of the danger. Seeing the urgent situation, Wukong sent a beam of true energy from his fingertips, hitting the dog’s abdomen. The dog let out a pained cry, crashed against the yellow earth wall, and died instantly. Worried that the child might be frightened, Wukong went over and said, “Go back inside and eat.” The child, though finding Wukong’s appearance strange, saw kindness and comfort in his eyes, so it nodded and headed back inside. At that moment, a woman with a barrel-like figure came out of the narrow alley. Seeing the dead dog and only Wukong and the child nearby, she started screaming, “Someone! My baby! My baby is dead!” The woman had a fierce expression, with bulging muscles on her face, giving her a domineering look. After shouting a few times, a man indeed appeared in the alley. Seeing the man, she screamed even louder, pointing at Wukong and saying, “You damned monkey! Why did you kill my baby? Give me my baby back!” Hearing her words, the man grabbed Wukong and started punching him. Wukong quickly blocked the attacks and apologized with a smile, “It’s a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding.” Unbeknownst to them, many people had gathered around. The man held Wukong and said to the crowd, “This monkey killed my child for no reason. What do you think should be the punishment?” Wukong hurriedly replied, “It wasn’t without reason; I did it to save this child.” The man shouted, “Nonsense! This is my own child! Who needs you to save him?” Wukong explained how the vicious dog had tried to snatch the hot bun from the child’s hands. There was an old man standing nearby; from his position, surrounded by the crowd like stars around the moon, it was clear he held considerable authority. Indeed, after hearing Wukong’s account, someone said, “Right or wrong, it’s up to Elder Meng to decide.” The man, still skeptical, released Wukong and went to Elder Meng, saying, “Elder Meng, please look at this matter…” The old man with the surname Meng stroked his beard and said, “This is simple. If this monkey hurt that vicious dog to save your child, it’s understandable. Surely you won’t blame him—after all, human life is more important to you.”

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 211: Capturing Zhu Bajie Wukong was eager for Zhu Bajie to take action. Compared to Tian Peng in his past life, Zhu Bajie seemed much more reckless and impulsive, appearing harmless on the surface—perhaps his nature had changed after reincarnation. Looking at Zhu Bajie, Wukong remembered the pig in the netherworld devoid of its spirit of lust and chaos, a spirit that induced lust and indulgence. This spirit had attached itself to Marshal Tian Peng, who was reborn as Zhu Bajie, with the pig’s spirit still causing trouble within him. Wukong wondered what changes had taken place during reincarnation. In his view, after becoming a pig, Zhu Bajie seemed even more lustful than when he was Marshal Tian Peng. Perhaps, having been repressed in heaven for so long, he now showed more of his true nature in the mortal world. Zhu Bajie swung his rake at Wukong. In his mind, Wukong was still the same one who had attacked Flower-Fruit Mountain—stronger than himself, but not by an enormous margin. He thought he could simply fight a few moves and then escape, letting the monkey vent his anger. But the blow he received was incredibly powerful. In just one exchange, Zhu Bajie’s hand cracked, his rake slipped from his grasp, and he plummeted from the clouds. Wukong circled in the air, caught Zhu Bajie, and turned one of his hairs into a rope to tie him tightly. Zhu Bajie groaned in pain and said, “My lord, there’s no deep grudge between us—why go to such extremes?” Wukong sneered, “I ask you instead: How did you end up like this?” Pretending not to know about Tian Peng, he wanted to see what Zhu Bajie would say. Hearing Wukong’s question, Zhu Bajie looked distressed, almost on the verge of crying, and said, “It’s a long story. I got drunk at the Peach Banquet and accidentally entered Chang’e’s Moon Palace, which angered the Jade Emperor greatly, leading to my expulsion. Who would have thought that the heavenly generals would use some useless trick to send me to a pigsty… Since then, I’ve been living in the Cloud Stack Cave on Fuling Mountain to the south.” Wukong laughed heartily, “What a Jade Emperor, what a Tian Peng…” After laughing for a while, he grabbed Zhu Bajie’s ear and asked, “Fuling Mountain is so far away—what are you doing here?” Zhu Bajie replied, “To be honest, I had a sweetheart in that cave, named Luan Erjie. But she died last year, so I found another match and am now living in this village.” His lies sounded so convincing that he even believed them himself. Then he raised his chin and retorted, “Am I not allowed to visit family?”

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 221: Subduing the Yellow Wind It was not until the red sun set in the west, twilight descended, and darkness fell that Tang Seng and Zhu Bajie finally woke up. Tang Seng stretched himself, still yawning nonstop, and stood up, saying, “Indeed, summer makes one tired easily. I slept through the whole afternoon until dark—fear I may have delayed our journey.” Wukong replied, “No delay at all. The Yellow Wind Ridge is vast; it might take a whole day to cross. It’s fine to rest here for the night.” Zhu Bajie grumbled, “It’s already dark. It’s hard to go anywhere. Sigh, let’s sleep again.” Tang Seng said, “Wukong, I’m a bit hungry. Can we find something to eat here?” Wukong replied, “Master, don’t worry. I’ll go fetch it right away.” He gathered the luggage and horses together. Seeing Zhu Bajie snoring again, he told Tang Seng to sit still and not move. Wukong picked up his Ruyi Jingu Bang and drew a circle on the ground to ward off evil spirits. After giving Tang Seng a few more instructions, he soared into the air to scout around. While searching for any settlements, he suddenly saw a cloud approaching from the west, with someone hurrying along inside—it was the Bull Demon King. Realizing the Bull Demon King must be bringing news, Wukong hurried to meet him. The Bull Demon King said at once, “The group led by Great Yu has just returned to Qi Tian Ridge.” Wukong asked anxiously, “Is everyone safe?” The Bull Demon King replied, “Most are safe. Only Jiumang and Zhurong suffered minor injuries but will recover soon.” Wukong said, “The battle must have been fierce.” The Bull Demon King explained, “According to Ying Zhao, Great Yu used Xirang to seal the Great Hero Hall. Buddha emerged from the soil but was driven back by Hou Yi’s three arrows. Later, the Ancient Buddha of Burning Lamp fought alone against the God of Metal, the God of Wood, and the God of Fire, finally securing some advantages for them. After the battle, both sides made peace. The Great Sage and National Teacher, King Bodhisattva, has already been brought back to Qi Tian Ridge. Though they were gone for a long time, not a moment was wasted—because on Ling Mountain, seven days equal a thousand years on earth, that’s why they only returned after one day.” Knowing that Wukong was now on a pilgrimage and couldn’t act as freely as before, the Bull Demon King quickly took his leave. Wukong flew eastward back to the village to find something to eat, his mind filled with turmoil. If even the Ancient Buddha of Burning Lamp could defeat three Hunyuan Golden Immortals, it was clear the Western Heaven was incredibly powerful. Without the support of the Three Pure Ones, the Heavenly Court was no match at all! Wukong used his ability to pass through walls and houses to steal some food. Such actions could be considered theft. But knowing it was crucial to keep Tang Seng safe, he didn’t dare go far. Sometimes, great goals required ignoring minor details. He returned and woke Tang Seng and Zhu Bajie. They quickly ate a few bites before falling back asleep. There was no conversation that night.

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 227: Wu Xiaomei Wukong could only sneer from the side. Although Zhu Bajie was greedy for drink and women, reckless, and lacking in strategy, this old man had an unknown background. Building a residence in these remote mountains—what kind of ordinary person could that be? Clearly, he had a plan in mind, setting a trap to lure others in. But since there was no trace of any supernatural aura around the estate, it was most likely some deity setting a challenge. It was best to wait and see what would happen. Tang Seng stood up and said, “This wretch is truly audacious! Let me… let me…” After struggling for a while, he couldn’t think of any way to punish Zhu Bajie, so he resolved, “I’ll write a letter to expel him from the sect!” Hearing Tang Seng’s determination, Zhu Bajie was terrified and burst into tears. This time, his grief was genuine—he had secretly intended to cause trouble in the pilgrimage group. If expelled by Tang Seng, he would be left destitute, with nowhere to go, not even in the heavenly realms or the Western Paradise. The old man, seeing Zhu Bajie’s pitiful state, felt pity and said, “Elder, why be so harsh? Although Pig Elder is a bit rough, he’s still an honest person. Let’s drop this matter.” Tang Seng replied, “Sir, it’s not that I’m heartless. In just one night, this fool has violated the three Buddhist precepts—false speech, drunkenness, and lustful thoughts. If such a person remains in our Buddhist community, won’t it bring shame to all Buddhist disciples?” The old man laughed and said, “Buddha once said: There is no one under heaven whom I do not love; no one whom I do not believe in; no one whom I do not forgive. These are the three ‘no’s’ of Buddhism. Considering it’s his first offense, let’s spare him this time.” At that moment, Wukong thought, If we drive away this fool, who will carry the luggage? So he said, “Master, let’s spare Zhu Bajie this time. If he dares to violate the precepts again, I’ll break his legs!” Hearing everyone’s advice and remembering that Zhu Bajie was a disciple taught by Guanyin to practice kindness, Tang Seng said, “Sigh, since that’s the case, I’ll spare you this time. I’ve lost all face today. If you dare to offend again, don’t blame me for not recognizing you!” Hearing there was hope, Zhu Bajie repeatedly pleaded, “Master, be merciful! Master, be merciful!” Wukong kicked him and said, “Hurry up and thank this elder.” Zhu Bajie said, “Senior brother, untie me so I can pay my respects! I’ll bow deeply!” Seeing that he was tightly tied, Wukong didn’t bother untying him. He simply blew gently, and the oxhide ropes broke apart. Zhu Bajie moved his limbs and knelt down, saying, “It’s my fault! I’ve lost my mind. I deserve death!”
- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 228: Unwavering Determination Tang Seng, hearing that the old man Wu had finally asked him, smiled faintly and said, “I became a monk at a young age; my secular name is long forgotten. Why ask about it?” The old man Wu replied, “All of us are raised by our parents. Even after entering Buddhism, we cannot abandon our flesh and blood. How could we forget the kindness of our parents?” Tang Seng thought of his own difficult fate, having been separated from his parents since childhood, and felt a myriad of emotions. The old man Wu continued, “The grace of nine months in the womb is immense, yet repayment over three lifetimes seems trivial. It takes eighteen years to nurture a child just one foot and three inches tall. How difficult it is for parents to bring a child into the world…” Hearing these words, Tang Seng felt extremely distressed, and tears streamed down his face. Unaware that the old man Wu had secretly used magic, he, being merely a mortal, could hardly withstand it. After Tang Seng finished crying, the old man Wu said, “Elder, please fulfill Old Man Yuan’s wish. If I don’t get everything I asked for, I won’t be at peace.” Tang Seng replied, “My secular surname is Chen.” Hearing that Tang Seng’s surname was Chen, the old man Wu widened his eyes in shock for a while, then suddenly raised his hands and exclaimed in joy, “Heaven is merciful! I’ve waited for three years—today, at last, I’ve seen this day!” He then began chanting “Amitabha” repeatedly. Seeing the old man Wu’s ecstatic reaction, Tang Seng couldn’t help but say, “Sir, there’s no need for this. Meeting me is of no use. I became a monk as a child and have long resolved to serve Buddha for life.” The old man Wu didn’t take it seriously and smiled, saying, “It’s easy to discuss. Everything can be negotiated.” Tang Seng never expected that just a surname could cause trouble, so he said, “I wonder what’s become of my three disciples. They are mischievous, and I’m a bit worried.” The old man Wu laughed and said, “Elder, go ahead. Marriage is not something that can be forced.” Hearing his increasingly absurd words, Tang Seng left the study and headed toward the front hall. As he reached the corridor, he saw Wu Xiaomei standing by the corridor with two maids, watching fish. Not wanting to meet her, he tried to go around. The old man Wu also left the study and whispered something in Xiaomei’s ear. Though he didn’t know what he said, Xiaomei’s face turned slightly red, and she said a few coquettish words. The old man Wu laughed heartily, clearly in high spirits. Hearing this from afar, Tang Seng felt uneasy. He took a few more steps and was about to reach the back door of the front hall when suddenly Wu Xiaomei appeared in front of him, with the two maids nowhere to be seen. She was dressed differently from before—wearing a light green patterned jacket and a sky-blue embroidered skirt, looking fresh and pleasant to the eye.

He warned the others, “That monster has transformed into an old woman again.” Bajie rushed up a few steps behind and asked, “Could it be she’s here to look for a daughter?” Wukong replied, “It’s not to look for a daughter. I think she’s still here to find the master.” Tang Seng asked, “Why would she be looking for me?” Before Wukong could answer, Bajie said, “Master, you still don’t realize how precious your body is. Ordinary people can live forever just by eating a piece of your flesh.” Tang Seng frowned on his horse and said, “Stop talking nonsense!” Seeing that Tang Seng only scolded Bajie, Wukong closed his eyes and remained silent, his expression calm as if unimpressed, clearly already aware of this. Just then, the old woman approached. Warned by Wukong, the others naturally ignored her. The mountain path was narrow, and with the three of them walking side by side, they almost passed the old woman by. As they were about to pass, the old woman suddenly leaped into the air and rushed at Tang Seng on his horse. Her desperate move revealed endless greed in her eyes—she seemed eager to merge with Tang Seng right away. Wukong was prepared. He turned around and shouted, “You wretched monster, how dare you!” The ghost didn’t bother to take any disguise this time. It appeared as a skeleton floating in the air, its empty eye sockets seemingly bottomless. Wukong sneered, “No matter how many forms you take, you can’t escape my sight!” The ghost said nothing, only staring coldly at Wukong. Seeing Wukong blocking the path, it didn’t dare to force its way through and slowly landed. Wukong kept an eye on it, fearing it might use some trick. But as soon as the ghost landed, it vanished without a trace. Wukong quickly turned to look at Tang Seng. Some unknown magic had allowed the ghost to appear in front of Tang Seng’s horse—its speed of disappearance was astonishing. Wukong exclaimed in alarm, “Protect the master!” and rushed over at once. In his shock, Wukong was delayed. The ghost had already lunged at Tang Seng, and Bajie, standing behind with his load, was even slower to react. Wukong was terrified—if the ghost took possession of Tang Seng, everything would be lost! His eyes narrowed in fury as he grabbed his Ruyi Jingu Bang. At the moment the ghost was about to grab Tang Seng, a glimmer appeared in Wukong’s left eye— The ghost was attached to the skeleton and naturally had no eyes; its two dark sockets stared blankly in some unknown direction. At that moment of the glimmer, the ghost’s movements stopped abruptly. It turned its head toward Wukong, as if pondering something.

He entered the room, where Zhu Bajie had just taken out the purple-gold alms bowl from his pack. Seeing Wu Kong come in, Bajie said, “Master was worried I wouldn’t find it, so he asked Senior Brother to come too.” Wu Kong glanced at Bajie and went ahead to get pen, ink, paper, and inkstone before leaving the room. Bajie muttered to himself, “Does begging for alms even require a written document?” Wu Hui replied, “Master became a monk since childhood. His skill at begging is top-notch—why would he need a written document?” Bajie laughed and said, “Probably because he hasn’t begged for a long time and fears forgetting the right words.” He cheerfully came out and saw Wu Kong fetching water from a vat in the courtyard, grinding ink, and laying paper on a rock. Tang Seng quickly wrote, and in just a dozen characters, a demotion order was completed. It read: “Second disciple Zhu Wuneng has violated the precepts, shows no willingness to reform, is stubborn and unchangeable, and cannot achieve enlightenment. He is now demoted back to Gao Laozhuang and will never be employed again.” After writing this, Tang Seng took two more sheets of paper and wrote two more copies in the same manner. Wu Kong watched and seemed to understand something. He recalled that Tang Seng had once been manipulated by the White Bone Spirit and written a demotion order for the Monkey King, and that order existed only in the Monkey King’s possession. Since a demotion order served as proof, it should logically be in three copies—one for the person being demoted, one for the writer, and one for a guarantor. It seemed that Tang Seng’s decision to demote the Monkey King back to Flower Fruit Mountain was impulsive, not genuine. But this time, with Bajie, it was done seriously, clearly with intent. Zhu Bajie, holding the purple-gold alms bowl, stood there in shock until Tang Seng finished writing all three copies. Then he snapped out of it, dropped the bowl, and knelt down, saying, “Master, what grave offense have I committed to deserve such cruelty from you?” Tang Seng replied, “You still ask me? With your mouth full of worldly desires, how can you still be considered part of my Buddhist community?” Having written the demotion order, his anger subsided. Since he no longer regarded Bajie as his disciple, whatever Bajie did was no longer his concern. Bajie glared at Wu Kong, assuming he must have betrayed him. Wu Kong felt helpless, thinking, “This has nothing to do with me. But how can I explain it?” He said to Tang Seng, “Master, Bajie was just greedy this time. It wasn’t a serious offense like killing or arson. Why be so angry?” Though Wu Kong seemed to be pleading for Bajie, he was actually trying to understand what was going on. Tang Seng’s behavior was extremely unusual—some external stimulus must have provoked him.
- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 264: The Avalokiteshvara Plan The king closed his eyes, resigning himself to fate. After waiting for a while, he felt the queen gently poking him twice from behind. Slowly opening his eyes, he saw Qin Wuxian and the others standing motionless as if carved from clay or wood, seemingly frozen in place. Gathering his courage, the king reached out to push aside the broken sword in front of his neck and asked tremulously, “Which deity has saved me?” Suddenly, a figure flashed inside the room—a monkey, none other than Wukong. Wukong smiled and said, “It’s not a deity; just a humble monk on a pilgrimage.” The king examined Wukong closely and said, “It really is you!” Then he tried to get down to pay his respects. Wukong held back the king and asked, “No need to bow. What should we do with these people?” Qin Wuxian and the others could speak but not move. Seeing that Wukong had subdued them without a trace, they cursed themselves for failing to recognize his greatness and not realizing the immense powers of these pilgrims. If they had known they would handle such matters, they would have waited until they left before taking action. The king was at a loss, not knowing what to do. Wukong lifted the paralysis spell from Qin Wuxian and said, “Master Qin, what remarkable skills! You even tried to seize the throne of a human king. It’s a shame you’re still just an immortal practitioner!” Qin Wuxian, now completely desperate, knelt down and begged for his life. Wukong smiled and said, “Killing you is effortless. You can choose how you want to die.” Qin Wuxian beat his head against the ground, pleading for mercy. After thinking for a moment, Wukong said, “Though you’ve committed capital crimes, it’s not my place to judge. Go live in a cave outside the city. If you can keep the land of Wuji Country peaceful for a hundred years, that will be considered forgiveness.” Hearing such a lenient punishment, Qin Wuxian immediately kowtowed in gratitude. Wukong added, “If you ever harbor evil thoughts again, bring your head here.” His words sounded casual, but to everyone else, they were like thunder. Wukong lifted the paralysis spell from everyone and asked, “Where has the Grand Master gone?” Qin Wuxian dared not hide anything and recounted what had happened. Wukong laughed inwardly—these people, through their chaotic actions, had driven away the Green Lion Demon. He wondered what Manjushri would think upon hearing this. Wukong waved his hand, telling everyone to leave. Then he turned to the king and said with a smile, “The Grand Master you’ve raised for so many years turns out to be a demon.” The king of Wuji Country broke into cold sweat, filled with fear. If it weren’t for Qin Wuxian’s ambition to seize the throne, who knew how much longer this demon would have hidden itself. He still wanted to express his thanks, but in the blink of an eye, Wukong vanished without a trace. The king called out twice, “Elder Immortal? Elder Immortal!” The palace fell silent, and only then did they realize Wukong had left.

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 272: The Fake Wukong Wukong saw Zhu Bajie outside Zifu Continent and was greatly surprised. He thought Bajie had returned to Gao Laozhuang to lead a mundane life after being demoted, but instead, he found himself on the immortal mountain of the Ten Continents and Three Islands. The immortals on Fangzhang Island did not recognize Bajie. They all pointed at this monster with a pig’s face and whispered among themselves. Bajie, rarely showing a serious expression, remained silent and waited quietly. On the white jade bridge, two boys kept watch. Any immortal who wished to meet the emperor had to be questioned by them first before deciding whether to be allowed in or not. Many of these immortals had weak cultivation skills and came hoping for a chance, as they heard that the Eastern Emperor would sometimes show leniency, allowing those with insufficient cultivation to be recorded in the immortal registry as celestial soldiers or officials. One after another, the immortals came to the white jade bridge, most returning disappointed—clearly, the Eastern Emperor had set very high standards that day. It was Bajie’s turn. Without waiting to be questioned, he stepped forward and whispered a few words. The boys’ expressions changed immediately, and they allowed Bajie to enter. The immortals waiting behind naturally felt resentful. Some immediately asked, “The Eastern Emperor is in charge of the immortal registry. How could he let even a demon in? He must have taken bribes!” One of the boys replied, “Stop making noise. That man was already on the immortal registry, so of course he can enter!” Hearing this, Wukong understood that although Bajie had been banished from the mortal world, his name remained in the immortal registry—apparently, the Heavenly Court had still kept a backdoor open for him. He followed Bajie in, feeling uneasy. He didn’t know what level of cultivation the Eastern Emperor possessed or whether his invisibility skill could deceive him. But in “Journey to the West,” Wukong’s invisibility skill had always worked perfectly. Now, with his powers far surpassing those of the original Monkey King, he felt a bit more confident. Bajie entered Zifu Continent and continued walking. After a while, Wukong saw nine jade pillars faintly visible on the left. Arranged in a nine-square pattern, their tops disappeared into the clouds—clearly much taller than those on Yingzhou Island. Wukong thought, “Those Nine Elders really didn’t deceive me.” Inside Zifu Continent was the Taiyuan Palace, where the Eastern Emperor held court. Bajie entered the main hall and knelt before the seated Eastern Emperor, begging, “Teacher, save me!” Teacher? How could the Eastern Emperor be Bajie’s teacher? Wukong wondered. The emperor seated above wore regal robes, but judging from his appearance, he seemed a few years younger than the Southern Pole Immortal—another youthful immortal. The emperor wasn’t surprised to see Bajie and said, “Stop shouting nonsense. Who is your teacher?” Ignoring those around him, Bajie cried, “Is it really you? I only recognize you as my teacher. Teacher, save my life!”

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 275: The Wordless Text Wukong searched for a good strategy to cross the ravine when Wu Ping reminded him, “Great Sage, why not go and ask the Bodhisattva again?” Wukong felt the answer was right before his eyes but just couldn’t figure it out. Stubborn, he ignored Wu Ping and continued to ponder hard. Just as he was deep in thought, a voice came from the sky, “Sun Wukong, I am here by the order of the Eastern Emperor to capture you!” Wukong looked up and saw over a dozen immortals arranged in formation, looking mighty, but he didn’t recognize any of them. Unfazed, Wukong asked, “Who are you? State your names!” One of them said, “You only need to remember the Eight Great Immortals; there’s no need to ask more!” Wukong smiled and asked, “What brings you here?” The immortal replied, “You are too bold and have angered the Eastern Emperor. We’re here to take you back for punishment!” Wukong said, “You fools with eyes but no wisdom! If you want to die, come ahead.” The immortal wielded a long scythe and leaped down from the sky, swinging it at Wukong. With all his anger nowhere to vent—and though he knew the Six-Eared Monkey was impersonating him—he saw no point in explaining. It was better to intimidate them with force to avoid further harassment. He simply raised his Ruyi Jingu Bang, and the scythe vanished without a trace. The immortal’s arms became weak, his palms cracked, and he shouted, “Attack together!” Wukong swung his staff like a tiger among sheep, breaking the bones of these so-called Eight Great Immortals, but he controlled his force and didn’t kill a single one. Wukong said to the immortal, “Go back and tell your master that these wretches are far from enough to capture me.” The immortal left in anger, but Wukong paid him no mind. He knew that though the Eastern Emperor was furious, he also understood the strength of the Heavenly Court well. Most powerful figures stayed in the shadows; those visible, like Emperor Gou Chen and the Heavenly Lord of Saving Sufferers, were the most troublesome, but even they might not obey the Eastern Emperor. As for the rest, who could really harm him? Among the powerful beings in the Ten Continents and Three Islands, only the Three Stars of Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity were somewhat formidable. If the Eastern Emperor really wanted to capture him, he would have to go to Kunlun Island for help. But by then, the Western Heaven surely wouldn’t stand idly by. How could the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother allow things to escalate this far? They would definitely intervene. At that moment, Tang Seng stood up from the ground and paced back and forth. While Wukong fought the Eight Great Immortals, he didn’t inquire further. He simply said, “Wukong, I remember now.” Wukong asked, “What have you remembered, Master?” Tang Seng replied, “Someone once taught me this scripture.” Wukong quickly asked, “Who?”
- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 276: The Great Plan In the Ziwei Palace, Ziwei and Zhenwu sat facing each other, each holding a scroll. These two jade scrolls were naturally sent by the Jade Emperor, and aside from their titles, their contents were identical. The matter of unifying the heavens was no trivial affair; even Ziwei and Zhenwu found it hard to remain calm. Zhenwu said, “It’s a divine opportunity.” Ziwei pondered and said, “The plan to unify the heavens is just in its infancy. I assume the Three Pure Ones, Gouchen, and others must have received similar jade scrolls as well. If the Jade Emperor isn’t completely foolish, he will surely wait to see everyone’s reactions before making a decision. To call it an opportunity is still premature.” Zhenwu replied, “From what I know about the Jade Emperor, once the jade scrolls have been sent, unifying the heavens becomes inevitable. He’s always been stubborn and inflexible—how many reckless and foolish acts has he not committed because of that?” Ziwei said, “Well, since you put it that way, I won’t argue with you. I just want to ask you: if he really decides to unify the heavens, what would you do?” Zhenwu asked, “Brother Ziwei, are you testing me?” Ziwei smiled and said, “How could that be? What we’re planning today is something that could turn the world upside down. If we don’t consider everything carefully…” Zhenwu said, “Good! It can’t hurt to be thorough. The current Jade Emperor acts in a chaotic manner, ignoring the welfare of the people, and has lost public support. Everyone in the heavenly court is merely pretending to cooperate—how many are truly willing to die for him? Let me list them for you!” “Among the Six Imperial Sovereigns, the Southern Pole Emperor of Eternal Life is insignificant; treating him as more than just an observer is already a compliment. The Eastern Pole Emperor of Azure Glory is severely injured and barely functional. Only the Western Pole Emperor of Gouchen still has the strength to fight. He’s always obedient to the Jade Emperor, which is quite troublesome.” “The thirty-six palaces in heaven each have their own allies. In terms of strength, the Ziwei Palace and the Yingyuan Mansion are undoubtedly the two strongest. The Ziwei Palace has the Left and Right Assistants, the Nine Bright Stars, the Seven Stars of the Big Dipper, the Twenty-Eight Constellations, not to mention its numerous star generals. They can barely match the 108 Thunder Generals of the Nine Heavens Yingyuan Thunder God Mansion. As for my Ziexiao Palace, we’re not to be underestimated either—we can easily surpass them.” “The other immortal officials and heavenly generals all have their own agendas. If not for dividing them into factions, they might split evenly. When the time comes, if I raise my voice, soldiers from all corners of the world will rise up, and every dragon and serpent in the land will respond. Just the momentum alone will be enough to intimidate people.” Ziwei said, “Planting a pawn at that time will indeed prove very useful.” Zhenwu replied, “It wasn’t me who planted that pawn. It was the Queen Mother’s tyranny, which destroyed the Northern Sea serpent clan. She surely never imagined that the sea serpents could muster such strength. Last year, she single-handedly fought against 100,000 heavenly soldiers—even I had to reevaluate her.” Ziwei said, “Compared to you, I’ve worked in vain.”

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 279: Speaking Carelessly Donghua the Emperor and Dongfang Shuo followed behind. Zhu Bajie was the first to rush in and bow. Just as the Jade Emperor was about to drink, he was startled by Zhu Bajie and turned to ask the Queen Mother, “Who is this?” The Queen Mother smiled and said, “If I hadn’t known in advance, I wouldn’t have imagined that the once dashing Marshal Tianpeng would end up like this.” “He’s Tianpeng?” The Jade Emperor recalled Tianpeng’s original appearance and compared it with the man before him, causing him to shudder. But he reacted quickly and said, “Someone, offer him a seat and some wine!” Zhu Bajie was overjoyed that the Jade Emperor was speaking to him and happily sat down. He raised his cup and drank it in one gulp, exclaiming, “Still, the wine in heaven is the best. These past few years have really made me… extremely hungry for it.” He had grown accustomed to calling himself “Old Pig” and almost said it again. The Jade Emperor then asked Donghua the Emperor to sit as well and remained silent. Previously, when Donghua the Emperor came here, he didn’t know the situation and waited for the Queen Mother to speak. The Queen Mother whispered to the Jade Emperor, “Tianpeng was banished back to Gao Laozhuang by a decree from Tang Seng. Later, Sun Wukong was sent to hunt him down. With nowhere to hide, he sought refuge with Donghua the Emperor. That monkey wouldn’t give up and caused a ruckus on Fangzhang Immortal Island, using his status as a Buddhist disciple to intimidate people. That’s why Donghua the Emperor came here to complain.” After hearing the Queen Mother’s account, the Jade Emperor uttered an “Oh” and asked Zhu Bajie, “Has the journey to obtain the scriptures gone smoothly?” Zhu Bajie replied, “Smooth… well, not really. There were always some demons blocking the way. Fortunately, my brothers are united, and their strength is unmatched…” As he spoke, he suddenly realized that he had already been banished by Tang Seng—how could he still talk about brotherhood? The Jade Emperor asking about the quest was actually to see if this undercover agent was useful. Back then, Tai Bai Jinxing had asked him to gather information along the way. Although he had been banished, he still knew some details. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t have had the chance to meet the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother. Zhu Bajie wasn’t that stupid either. He knew this opportunity was hard-won and might only come once. So he began to think about how to fabricate a lie that would make the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother see him as someone who, despite his sins, was sincerely working for the heavenly court. If the Jade Emperor was pleased, even if he couldn’t restore him to his position as Marshal Tianpeng, giving him a minor official role would be better than being a demon on earth. Hearing Zhu Bajie’s mess of a story, the Queen Mother laughed and said, “You must still remember which demons you encountered along the way, how you dealt with them, and why you were banished.”

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 303: The Might of the Great Peng Upon learning that the Armored Divine Ape had undergone a drastic change in attitude, Wukong was overjoyed. In his form as Zhuanxu, he left Qitianling and circled around the Tongtian River. The riverbanks were a dismal green, slightly lighter in color, but it was still impossible to cross. Remembering something, Wukong used magic to create a large circle around the area, preventing anyone from entering. This was done to protect ordinary people from accidentally coming here and losing their lives, thus earning him some merit. After doing this, Wukong did not return to Chen’s village but flew westward. Da Yu and the others had been out fighting for a day; it was unknown whether they had encountered any obstacles. More than two thousand li west of Qitianling lay the Jisaiguo. When Wukong reached east of Jisaiguo, he saw a desolate mountain where the demons and soldiers of Qitianling were camped. Wukong descended and found the main tent, where the Bull Demon King, the Golden-Winged Great Peng, and the Nine-Spirit Sage were sitting idly. As soon as they saw Wukong enter, the Bull Demon King shouted first, “Wukong, come and judge this!” Wukong smiled and asked, “What needs judging?” The Bull Demon King replied, “Da Yu took us out but just left us in these desolate lands, while he himself went to the city to enjoy himself with Hou Yi!” Wukong said, “Senior Da Yu has his own plans. He is the commander of our army—who else should we listen to?” The Bull Demon King grumbled, “I thought things would be more interesting once we came out, but it’s still so boring!” Wukong said, “To the west is Jisaiguo, a city full of ordinary people. If you want to fight, go ahead.” The Bull Demon King snorted and ignored Wukong. At that moment, Da Yu and Hou Yi entered the tent. After greeting Wukong, they sat down and said, “We just explored Jisaiguo. There, Buddhism is promoted and Taoism suppressed; the whole country is filled with Buddhist pagodas and temples.” The Bull Demon King exclaimed, “Then let’s tear them down!” The Golden-Winged Great Peng said, “It’s easy to destroy temples, but hardest to change people’s hearts. Do you really want to kill all those who believe in Buddhism?” The Bull Demon King replied, “How could I, an old ox, harm ordinary people?” Da Yu said, “We’re not here to show force. Our goal is to prevent the people here from remaining foolish believers. So brute force won’t work; we need to find a clever way.” The Bull Demon King asked, “If that’s the case, why bring so many soldiers?” Wukong replied, “Since Qitianling wants to expand outward, someone must occupy the land. Every village, fortress, mountain, and ridge needs an agent of Qitianling—only then can we rule from the root. Otherwise, if we take it today but lose it tomorrow, what’s the point?” The Bull Demon King was stunned and sighed, “Now that you put it that way, I realize the Heavenly Court is truly powerful. There are land gods, mountain spirits, and river monsters everywhere in the world—this will take a tremendous amount of effort.”

- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 311: Success Comes Naturally The Old Lord once said, “Man follows the earth, the earth follows the sky, and the sky follows nature.” It seems now that the teachings passed down by Hou Tu share a striking resemblance with the Old Lord’s philosophy. Could this be evidence that all great paths stem from the same source? Wukong had also noticed that figures like Dayu and Hou Yi did not rely solely on spells and techniques; they were examples of building strength over time before acting. Hou Tu was also an ancient being who had been close to Dayu and others—she should have had no exposure to Daoist teachings. So why did her teachings bear such a resemblance to Daoism? As he pondered these thoughts, he suddenly sensed that the heavy snow had stopped. The dark clouds in the sky dispersed, and a auspicious cloud drifted in, clearing the gloom. Yet there was no one there—only a letter floating down. Wukong caught the letter mid-air. It contained just five words: “Success comes naturally.” Below it was the signature, “Avalokiteshvara of the South Sea.” Wukong cursed inwardly—these people always backed down at the first sign of difficulty. What did “Success comes naturally” mean? With the heavens and the Western Paradise locked in fierce conflict, his path to seeking help in the Heavenly Palace was completely blocked. If Avalokiteshvara wouldn’t help, he had no choice but to go to the Western Paradise. Wukong flew straight west. After passing the Country of Sacrificial Competitions, he saw a ridge ahead filled with a strong aura of evil. Upon closer inspection, it was the demon soldiers from Qitian Ridge. He wanted to inquire, but realizing it would draw too much attention, he flew over the ridge on the clouds. Suddenly, a gust of wind flashed beside him. Glancing sideways, he saw a small arrow tied with white silk flying alongside him at his height. It must be Hou Yi sending him a message. Wukong reached out, caught the arrow, and untied the silk. The message roughly stated that over the past few months, the demon soldiers had driven all the Buddhists from the Country of Sacrificial Competitions. Some had abandoned their faith, while many devout believers had fled to other lands. The demon soldiers were stationed there because Dayu feared that continuing their advance in such extreme cold would endanger the people, so he wanted to wait until the weather warmed up before expanding further west. After reading it, Wukong sighed. Indeed, Emperor Dayu was kind-hearted, putting the people first even at such a time. Though he hadn’t expected this, Dayu’s actions aligned perfectly with his own views, so he would surely support them wholeheartedly. Wukong destroyed the arrow message and leaped in a somersault toward the Western Paradise. Upon arriving at the Great Hero Hall, Wukong knelt and bowed, shouting, “Buddha, save me!” Seeing the golden ring on Wukong’s head, the Buddha remained calm and said, “Wukong, this is not a disaster. You need not worry.” Wukong complained, “Buddha, even if it were fortune, I wouldn’t want it. Let whoever wants it have it.” The Buddha laughed and said, “Once you complete your quest, I will naturally remove this golden ring for you.” Wukong was both surprised and delighted. “Buddha, don’t deceive me!” The Buddha replied, “A monk never lies.”

- Volume 3: A Long Journey, Chapter 313: The Secret of Beginnings After a long while, the tumultuous emotions in Wukong’s heart gradually calmed down, and he began to ponder over what Laojun had said: “When the world is united, it is as if I have come; when the world is divided, it is as if I have gone.” After repeating these words several times, Wukong couldn’t help but curse, “Damn it!” Laojun’s gaze at Wukong was as if he had found a flea in the Tushita Palace—could even the Divine Ape of Creation swear? The reason Wukong cursed was that he realized the meaning behind that person’s name clearly contradicted that of the Divine Ape of Creation! The Divine Ape of Creation appeared after Pangu split the chaos, yet this person said, “When the world is united, it is as if I have come”; the Divine Ape of Creation disappeared when heaven and earth returned to chaos, yet this person said, “When the world is divided, it is as if I have gone.” Moreover, this person used the powers of the previous cycle to create a golden ring to restrain Wukong—how could Wukong not curse? Laojun said, “That person was not originally called Tathagata; he adopted that name after realizing the perils of the previous cycle.” Wukong asked, “What was his original name?” Laojun replied, “He originally had no name.” Wukong had long forgotten about Bodhisattva Nagarjuna. Was this Tathagata related to the current Buddha Tathagata? If so, how could Laojun and the others remain so calm? What had they been doing all these years? Wukong asked, “What did you think when you first heard the name of the current Buddha Tathagata?” Laojun said, “Coincidence.” “Impossible! How can such a thing be a coincidence?” Laojun replied, “I truly think it’s a coincidence. The language of this world differs slightly from that of the previous cycle, and there are various forms. The original meaning of Tathagata is ‘the awakened one,’ so I consider it a coincidence.” Wukong asked further, “Then… were there any attempts to test it?” Laojun nodded. “Of course. This Tathagata bears no resemblance to that person at all, so after a few attempts, we stopped doubting. Besides, when this Tathagata appeared, his cultivation was insignificant, so we really didn’t pay attention.” Wukong pressed on, “What about after that? Even after he became the current Buddha, did you not pay any attention?” Laojun said, “With our three of us having such high cultivation, if he had even the slightest connection to that person, we would have discovered it clearly. After a few attempts with no signs, we gave up the idea!” Wukong thought for a moment. The Three Pure Ones indeed had the qualifications to say such things, but that person had always been superior to them. Who knew what methods he used to deceive them? Just the fact that this Tathagata wasn’t the original one, yet his actions and methods were so similar—both showing interest in the Kings of the Five Categories—made Wukong conclude that even if this Tathagata wasn’t that person, he must surely be working for him!

Wukong untied the ropes and examined him carefully. Fortunately, Tang Seng was only weak and unharmed or poisoned. Seeing Wukong, Tang Seng said sadly, “My disciple, you’ve come at last.” Wukong replied, “Master, this hardship was destined. Thankfully, nothing serious happened. Now let’s go back to the Western Liang Women’s Kingdom with me.” Hearing that they were going back to the Western Liang Women’s Kingdom, Tang Seng exclaimed, “No, no! Go and call Wu Hui and Wu Ping out of the city. I’ll wait west of the city.” Wukong laughed, “Master, you’re really scared.” The two returned to the women’s kingdom. After ensuring Tang Seng was taken care of, Wukong went to the Golden Hall to find Wu Hui and Wu Ping. The two had already prepared their horses and luggage to pick up Tang Seng. Zhu Rong called Wukong back and said, “Young elder, go slowly.” Wukong turned around and chatted casually with Zhu Rong. When he saw Wu Hui and Wu Ping walking away, he asked, “Is there anything?” Zhu Rong replied, “Avalokiteshvara was here and recognized me.” Wukong thought for a moment and said, “It doesn’t matter if she recognized you. Everyone knows about what happened beyond Qitian Ridge. How could she still doubt?” Zhu Rong said, “From her expression, she must have some plan in mind. Be careful in the future.” Wukong bowed deeply and said, “Thank you, sister.” Zhu Rong laughed and said, “Go now. I’m also returning to Qitian Ridge. The current grand preceptor’s illness should be cured by now.” Wukong glanced at the queen in the hall, who looked distraught, and said, “This queen has a serious illness.” Zhu Rong laughed and asked, “Do you have any medicine?” Wukong replied, “Even heaven and earth need yin and yang to balance. This Western Liang Women’s Kingdom is actually against the laws of nature.” Zhu Rong said, “By the way, what did you find in the River of Mother and Child?” Thinking of the Buddhist hell, Wukong shuddered and said, “I’ve already talked to Sister Hou Tu. You can ask her when you get back.” Zhu Rong said, “Oh, you’ve gotten another sister?” Wukong replied, “You were here first.” Zhu Rong laughed and said, “I’m not that petty. Hou Tu has always been my sister.” The two chatted further, feeling greatly relieved that, aside from their previous feelings, they could now be so open with each other. Wukong said, “I should head west. We might meet again in Qitian Ridge.” Zhu Rong laughed and said, “Good. I should keep you here for a few more days.” Wukong replied, “If you keep me for a few days, it will take a few more days to reach Qitian Ridge.” Zhu Rong said, “Then let them attack! Who’s afraid of them?” Wukong bid farewell to Zhu Rong, caught up with Tang Seng, and continued westward. ※ ※ ※
- Volume 3: A Long Journey Chapter 332: The Deception Plan Tang Seng did not turn around and was unaware that Wu Kong was following behind. Suddenly, he saw a fake Wu Kong coming from the west. When Liu Er approached, he exclaimed in surprise, “Wu Kong, why did you go ahead of me?” Seeing Tang Seng, Liu Er’s expression became very strange. He said, “Master, it is said that Qi Tian Ling is ahead. I’ll go explore it first.” Tang Seng asked, “Qi Tian Ling? What place is that?” Liu Er replied, “Ten out of ten demons in the world gather there—at least seven out of ten. The demons there possess powers that reach heaven and earth, so even the Heavenly Court and the Western Paradise dare not act rashly.” Hearing this, Tang Seng felt terrified and said urgently, “What should we do then? Do we have to go around it?” Liu Er said, “This mountain stretches over six thousand li from north to south, surrounded by dangerous peaks. Even if we go around, we can’t escape the demons’ attacks. It might take two or three years to get through.” Tang Seng asked, “Then… what should we do? How far is it still to Qi Tian Ling?” Liu Er replied, “There are still two or three thousand li left.” Seeing Liu Er appear in his own guise, dressed exactly the same, even with the identical golden ring on his head, Wu Kong thought to himself that if others saw this, it would cause chaos. Noticing that Liu Er had readily accepted the role, Wu Kong guessed his intentions and quietly disappeared, sending a message: “What are you doing here?” Liu Er replied, “It’s a reunion of the divine apes!” Hearing this, Wu Kong was deeply moved, feeling a warm emotion—turns out Liu Er also knew of his identity as a wise divine ape. Wu Kong sent another message, “Why did you disguise yourself as me?” Liu Er replied, “Feng Tong sent me. Go ask him yourself.” Without hesitation, Wu Kong flew toward Qi Tian Ling with the help of the breeze. Upon arriving at Qi Tian Ling, Wu Kong openly took on the appearance of Zhuanxu and headed toward Feng Tong’s cave. As he walked, he suddenly heard someone calling him—it was the Goddess of Earth. Though eager to see Feng Tong, Wu Kong had no choice but to go to the Goddess of Earth’s cave. He asked, “Sister, why did you call me?” The Goddess of Earth replied, “I saved that little Zhang.” Wu Kong felt ashamed inwardly; he had forgotten about this matter and should have come to inquire himself. He asked, “Does he still remember anything?” The Goddess of Earth said, “He’s a bit delirious, but he can still speak a few words.”

Do you have a feud with the Western Heaven?” The python spirit shook its head and said, “Anything with a human form is not good.” The Bull Demon King rolled his eyes and said, “Then why did you take on a human form?” The python spirit looked down at itself and murmured, “Strangely enough, having hands and feet does make things more convenient.” The Bull Demon King looked at himself and said, “How can we judge everything as good or bad? People call demons evil forces, while demons call humans evil stars—both are nonsense!” The python spirit naturally disagreed but dared not argue with the Bull Demon King. It said, “Elder, it’s best not to delay. Let’s restore Xishi Gou to its original state first.” The Bull Demon King said, “Good. Show me what magical powers you have!” Hearing this, the python spirit rallied its strength, soared into the air, and revealed its true form. The Bull Demon King was amazed—this giant red-scaled python had red eyes that emitted light, a nose that sprayed white mist, two rows of sharp barbed fangs, and a long horn on its head that glowed like agate. Its red scales resembled layers of rainbow colors. Though strange, it wasn’t enough to earn the Bull Demon King’s praise. What was truly remarkable was its enormous length—ordinary people could only see its head or tail, never both. It spanned two or three mountains as it lay across the ridge. The Bull Demon King exclaimed, “Great!” and was eager to see the python use its powers to clean up Xishi Gou. Just then, something unexpected happened. A voice from above shouted, “You wretched scoundrel! How dare you reveal your true form in broad daylight?” The Bull Demon King looked up and saw a monk. Realizing this wasn’t good, he stood up to confront him. He observed the monk carefully—his robe was draped loosely, revealing one arm; his ears hung down to his shoulders; he stood barefoot on the clouds, his face filled with anger as he stared at the red-scaled python. Seeing the Bull Demon King blocking his way, the monk asked, “How dare you commit evil here?” The Bull Demon King was stunned. He had only asked the python spirit to clear the path in Xishi Gou—was that considered evil? He said, “With which eye did you see me commit evil?” The monk shouted, “Stop denying it! None of the demons in the world are good!” Angered, the Bull Demon King retorted, “None of the bald guys in the world are good either!” The monk glared at the Bull Demon King and tried to capture the giant python. The Bull Demon King wouldn’t let him pass, so he roared, “Watch this punch!” and threw a huge fist. The monk turned around and blocked it with one palm, sending the Bull Demon King tumbling twice. The Bull Demon King had held back to avoid appearing like a sneak attacker, but the monk was surprisingly strong. The Bull Demon King steadied himself and asked, “Who are you?”

- Volume 4: The Revelation Unveiled Chapter 401: On Divine Weapons Wukong followed Xuan Nu out of the 35th Heaven’s Jade Clear Palace. From a geographical perspective, the 36 heavens of Taoism were located to the southeast of the four great continents. Standing at such a great height, Wukong could see most of the Eastern Sea and the Southern Sea. In the past, even if he reached sufficient heights, his vision was limited. But after achieving perfection in the Five Elements, his mastery of the Xuan Kong Secret Technique had improved greatly, allowing him to see extremely far. To his surprise, Wukong noticed that a portion of the Eastern Victory Continent jutted out. According to later accounts, this place was surrounded by seas on three sides and should be called a peninsula. Yet this protruding part was extremely narrow, and at its end lay a large, angular island that resembled an axe. Together, these two parts exactly matched the shape of the Pangu Axe described in the “Instrument Canon.” It was then that Wukong remembered passing by this place back when King Ksitigarbha had set up the ordeal of the Endless Gorge, forcing Wukong to search the Southern Sea for the Thousand-Foot Jade. But due to other matters on his mind and flying at a low altitude, he only had a vague impression. It was not until today that he could see this peculiar landscape in its entirety. Xuan Nu asked, “What do you see?” Wukong replied, “The Pangu Axe.” Xuan Nu nodded and said, “Can you see it completely?” Wukong said, “There’s an axe head and a handle—should that count as seeing it all?” Xuan Nu said, “Look more carefully.” Wondering, Wukong focused his gaze as instructed. Indeed, it was the Pangu Axe. Could there possibly be any other patterns to discern? Seeing Wukong’s confusion, Xuan Nu said, “You haven’t mastered the Xuan Kong Secret Technique yet, have you?” Wukong felt a bit guilty. He hadn’t practiced this technique for a long time. Although he had achieved perfection in the Five Elements, his understanding was shallow, and he had only mastered volumes one and two; volume three was not yet at its peak. Perceiving Wukong’s thoughts, Xuan Nu said, “It’s not your fault. I was too hasty. Since you can’t see anything, let me tell you.” “The Pangu Axe originated from chaos and is not one of the Five Elements. After creating heaven and earth, it transformed into Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, scattering across the earth to become several extraordinary magical weapons.” Wukong remembered Yang Jian once saying that after the Pangu Axe shattered, it became the Taiji Diagram, the Pangu Banner, and the Four Swords for Exterminating Immortals—only six items in total. If it was related to Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, there should be at least seven. So he couldn’t help asking, “Who possesses the Taiji Diagram and the Pangu Banner?” Xuan Nu was taken aback and laughed, “Where did you hear such nonsense?” Wukong replied, “Yang Jian, the Second Lord God, told me.” Xuan Nu said, “That little Yang Jian is quite amusing. He takes mortal stories as truth.” “Isn’t it true?” Wukong asked.

Her willow whip shot out like a serpent emerging from its den, aiming swiftly at the God of Relieving Suffering. He hurriedly pulled back to save himself. Meanwhile, the God of Gou Chen shouted, “Form the formation!” Thus, the 108 generals of the Thunder Army—the Messengers of the Five Thunder, the Generals of the Five Directions, the Great Generals of Cloud and Thunder, and the Messengers of the Barbarian Thunder—raced across heaven and earth, surrounding Wukong and Guanyin in the center. The clear sky instantly turned purplish-red. The thunder generals each held magical weapons—Jade Pivot Thunder, Taiyi Thunder, Shenshao Thunder, Fiery Wind Thunder, Iron Armor Thunder, Fire Cloud Thunder…—and threw them like fireworks. Back then, after Zhu Bajie had secretly attempted to assassinate Tang Seng, he lived in constant fear. He knew he had caused serious trouble and was worried that the Buddhists would come after him. One day, the Eastern Emperor went to heaven to report the incident. Upon returning, he came angrily to seek Bajie, determined to sacrifice him to save the rest. But as soon as he saw Bajie, he was overwhelmed by an unbearable stench that seemed to emanate from his very bones. Even from ten zhang away, the Eastern Emperor could hardly bear it. With his great powers, the Eastern Emperor could easily tell that Bajie had been subjected to some dark magic similar to the Seven Arrows of Nailheads. Hmph! Which Taoist would go to such lengths to torment this pig? It must be the Buddhists, forcing him to live in a state of neither life nor death. Seeing his condition, it was even worse than killing him. The Eastern Emperor spat in hatred and left without caring about Bajie’s cries of “Master, save me!” After that, Zhu Bajie, covered in stench, could hardly move on Fangzhang Island. Wherever he went, people would avoid him, staying at least ten or eight li away. Abandoned by all, he eventually saw everyone on the island as enemies. Yet he dared not leave, as the Ten Continents and Three Islands were still relatively safer. The stench persisted for over two years before gradually dissipating. Unaware of this, on the roof of the horse stable in the Black Chicken Kingdom, a clay figure stuffed between two tiles was finally washed away by heavy rain, and a pig’s tail hair fell out. After enduring this unbearable stench, Bajie’s temperament became even more peculiar. He ignored anyone who spoke to him and harbored deep, unfounded hatred toward the people in heaven. His life had been full of hardships—he had endured being a disciple, experienced glory as a marshal, and lived as a demon, relying on others. He understood the coldness of the world best. When he was a marshal in heaven, everyone flattered him; even after turning into a pig, he remained the second disciple chosen by Guanyin for the pilgrimage, holding a prestigious status.

Wukong asked Tathagata if he had a heart, without any hint of mockery. It is said that all paths arise from the heart, for the heart is the master of all things. Buddhism focuses on enlightening the heart, Taoism on cultivating it, and Confucianism on preserving it—all centered around the heart as the path. The heart has two natures: the human heart and the Tao heart. The human heart refers to the tangible heart within the body, visible to ordinary people. The Tao heart does not depend on birth or death; those who live in ignorance and confusion cannot see it. One must understand that heaven has its laws, earth has its principles, humans have reason, objects have their physical laws, and events have their logic. When reason prevails, order exists; when it is lost, chaos ensues. The Tao heart, or the Tao itself, is formless and colorless—invisible and inaudible. It is everywhere yet nowhere, governing all things without exception. *Journey to the West* In the first chapter, the title is “The Spiritual Root Gives Birth to All Things; Cultivating the Heart Leads to the Great Way.” “Spirit” refers to the mind, “root” to the foundation, “source” to the origin, and “flow” to everything that emerges from that source. All phenomena arise from the mind, and all vanish when the mind ceases to exist—the mind is the source of all things. No matter how skillful one’s deceptions may be, they cannot deceive one’s own heart. Once there is an obsession in the heart, that becomes a flaw. Tathagata thought for a moment before smiling and saying, “The ten directions of emptiness exist within your heart, like a cloud dotting the vast expanse. Can you see through it?” Wukong sneered, “How dare you speak of the ten directions of emptiness? Even in this single world, you cannot see through it or escape—right?” Tathagata’s greatest obsession was actually to escape this world. Wukong’s words struck at the core of his pain, but how could he care about such a trivial provocation? He stopped answering Wukong, stretched out his palm, and struck downward, shouting, “Do you still remember the Five Elements Mountain?” The Five Elements Mountain? Wukong saw that Tathagata’s palm contained the power of the five elements, much like the one that had trapped him there before. Only then wasn’t Tathagata a sage, nor was Wukong the same Taiyi Golden Immortal. The power of the five elements posed little threat to Wukong. He leaped forward to meet it, shouting, “If I hadn’t done it on purpose, how could you have trapped me?” Wukong knew Tathagata was skilled in strategy, but he wanted to undermine Tathagata’s confidence. While you scheme against others, someone else is scheming against you. It was I, Sun Wukong, who caused chaos during the quest for the scriptures—what can you do about it?

- Volume 4: The Revelation Revealed Chapter 471: A Great Battle The Bodhisattva’s body gradually softened, and the restraining force around him vanished in an instant. Da Peng knew that this realm had been broken. Unrelenting, Da Peng used his claws to tear open the Bodhisattva’s Nvwan Palace and swallowed the Bodhisattva’s original spirit in one gulp. What Da Peng had used earlier was naturally his innate divine skill—Tian Peng Bian. He was also uneasy, as this was his first battle against a sage, and it took place in someone else’s realm. He wasn’t sure whether Tian Peng Bian would work. But if he didn’t use a special tactic, continuing like this would surely lead to his death. Tian Peng Bian wasn’t invincible either; it was most effective when used when the opponent was off guard. Thus, Da Peng stayed calm until the enemy attacked before taking action—a highly risky move. As the Bodhisattva’s corpse fell, the Golden-Winged Da Peng raised his head and let out a clear cry, almost to the point of tears. From a child who followed in the footsteps of his elders, he had grown into a master capable of defeating sages—a path filled with immense hardship. He saw that the Bull Demon King was struggling against three Bodhisattvas and was at a disadvantage. Fortunately, the Bull Demon King had thick skin, and the three Bodhisattvas didn’t possess any powerful magic weapons, allowing him to hold on. Da Peng spread his wings and flew downward. With a snap of his Wind-Thunder Wings, he enclosed one Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva felt darkness before two powerful gusts hit him. Da Peng suddenly pulled out his sharp claws from beneath his wings, leaving the Bodhisattva covered in blood. If the Bodhisattva hadn’t dodged quickly, he would have been torn apart. Da Peng’s confidence soared at this moment. Together with the Bull Demon King, they quickly turned the tide and defeated the three Bodhisattvas utterly. Jiu Ling Yuan Sheng and the two from Qingqiu—one with nine heads and the other with nine tails—had combat strength surpassing that of ordinary Hunyuan Jinxian by three or four times. Although five Bodhisattvas surrounded them, the two of them killed two of them. The remaining three, though fearful, didn’t dare retreat and continued to attack. This time, Qi Tian Ling sent only these four Hunyuan Jinxian into battle. Looking at the overall situation, they were under the least pressure. At this moment, Hou Tu emitted a yellow light, enveloping an area of a hundred miles with her earthly power, trapping no less than a hundred Bodhisattvas inside. These Bodhisattvas entered Hou Tu’s realm, searching for a way out. But Hou Tu’s cultivation was far superior to theirs, and coupled with her earthly power, it was impossible for them to break free. Even so, Hou Tu was under considerable pressure as well. With such a realm-creation technique, having a hundred people attacking inside required her to expend a great deal of spiritual energy.

- Volume 4: The Revelation Revealed Chapter 474: Lowering a Thing This golden flower had five petals, glowing brightly. The five divine apes, upon seeing it, couldn’t help but recall many past events from their lives. Chaos gave birth to the vitality of all things, yet it was misunderstood and persecuted by humans. Generation after generation, they spent their lives in exile. Driven by self-interest or deception, people regarded these divine apes as ominous beings. All those painful memories resurfaced in the minds of the five divine apes. The divine apes tried to save the world, yet humans hated them in return. There was no greater injustice in the world than this. The five divine apes were deeply engrossed in these thoughts, filled with indignation. Just then, a yellow cloud drifted over the golden flower. It was Yuan Shi, who, seeing that the five divine apes had grasped the path of Tathagata, couldn’t help but intervene and cover the golden flower with his Yellow Chaos Flag. He knew that although the five divine apes were highly skilled, none weaker than Tathagata, their cultivation progress was too rapid. Though their magical powers surpassed those of ordinary people, their mental fortitude still needed much refinement. With his move, Yuan Shi shattered the illusion of the golden flower. Naturally, Tathagata was displeased. He could also see that Yuan Shi had made great progress in array formations. If he used ordinary methods, he truly wouldn’t be able to deceive him. But setting up the Great Yin-Yang Array of Heaven and Earth wasn’t something that could be done in a hurry. How could it be accomplished in such a rush? Seeing that the seventeen sages had retreated to the Creation Furnace, and only Yellow-Horn Immortal was still fighting desperately against Ni Li, already at a disadvantage, Tathagata said, “If you don’t know when to quit, don’t blame me for being ruthless.” Yuan Shi replied, “Since you’re an enemy, why pretend to be friendly?” Tathagata sighed and said, “You know very well that this world will perish sooner or later, and everyone in it will become prey.” Yuan Shi said, “If you had said this years ago, maybe I would have helped you!” “Oh?” Tathagata was surprised. “What’s the difference?” Yuan Shi said, “As the ruler of the world, instead of spreading your teachings properly, you go against nature by creating hell and coveting the destinies of sentient beings. Such acts against heaven make me ashamed to be associated with you!” Tathagata was stunned for a moment before bursting into laughter. “I never expected that I, Tathagata, would have such an inflexible disciple. The beings of this world? You want to save them?” Ignoring Tathagata’s mockery, Yuan Shi replied solemnly, “That’s right, I intend to save them!” Tathagata shook his head and said, “By then, you might not even be able to save yourself. What will you use to save others?” He pointed at the five divine apes one by one and asked, “Rely on them? Five naive monkeys?”

- Volume 4: The End of Secrets Chapter 498: It’s You After all, dawn had arrived unnoticed. Wukong had already calculated the distance; it was time to reach the territory of the Eastern Earth God. Seeing a small city below, he looked down. Flags fluttered atop the city walls, and several miles away, there were many camps. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was two armies facing off. What luck—having come here, he hadn’t yet seen ancient soldiers fight. But then he thought, in war, countless lives would be lost, leaving orphans and widows, families shattered. Wukong used his secret technique to observe carefully and saw a large character “Chu” written on the flag atop the city walls, while the flags in the camps below bore the character “Han”! The Chu-Han Contention? Could it be Liu Bang and Xiang Yu? Wukong found it extremely strange. For the first time, he felt as if time was flowing backward. Before that, it was the Sui and Tang dynasties; last time, it was the Southern and Northern Dynasties. Now, he had returned to the Chu-Han era… In a few thousand years, might he even return to the primitive ages? With this thought, Wukong transformed into a gust of wind and wandered around the city. When he returned to the clouds, he murmured, “It really is the Overlord of Chu!” He remembered clearly the changes in dynasties throughout history—Xia, Shang, Zhou, Spring and Autumn, Warring States, Qin, Han, Three Kingdoms, and so on. But these were known only to him. Who else could he tell? Even if he did, no one would believe him. Unconsciously, he glanced up at the sky. Who could be driving this reversal of time within the furnace? He had come here just to see this. The Dragon Maiden had taught him how to navigate the world. Now, he felt impatient. He was no longer that naive being; with his identity as a traveler from a later era, though young, his mindset and knowledge far surpassed those around him. Meeting Monk Longshu had already been a pleasant surprise. There was no one else in the world he particularly wanted to see. At this moment, Buddha was likely working day and night to refine his body as the Great Sun Buddha. If he succeeded, the world within the furnace would be turned upside down. After some thought, Wukong looked down, then turned and flew away toward Qitian Ridge. He knew the outcome of the Chu-Han Contention. Though he didn’t want to see suffering, he couldn’t intervene. Whether in history or reality, everything followed its own laws. With his current abilities, he could indeed change these things, but wouldn’t that go against the principle of “helping people retain their true nature”? Before reaching Qitian Ridge, he saw Xuan Nu and Yin Yang heading east. Wukong stopped them and asked in surprise, “Where are you going?” Yin Yang wasn’t surprised to see Wukong back. “Xuan Nu invited me to break through the formation,” they said. “Break through a formation? What formation?” Wukong asked Xuan Nu.

- Volume 4: The Revelation Revealed Chapter 509: Gathering Destiny Xuan Nu headed straight to the northeast, naturally to seek Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. The netherworld was under Ksitigarbha’s control. Though it no longer indiscriminately absorbed the destiny of ordinary people as before, it remained a place where all beings in the world were reborn, a gathering ground for destiny. When Xuan Nu arrived at the Netherworld Hall, Ksitigarbha seemed to have been preparing in advance. Smiling, he handed her a small cauldron and said, “There are many tasks at hand now. I’ll go see Wukong later.” Xuan Nu took the cauldron. Without sensing it, she knew it contained endless destiny. Naturally, she didn’t need to thank him. She asked Ksitigarbha, “You already knew Wukong had arrived?” Ksitigarbha replied, “With the Rain God Hall and the Earth Mother Hall, Di Ting is the least busy one now.” Xuan Nu bid farewell to Ksitigarbha and headed toward the Tongtian River. By the Tongtian River, almost all the world’s top experts had gathered—some floating in midair, some standing on the ground. In the center, sitting motionless with eyes closed, was Wukong. He had just eaten the two peach fruits, and the power of destiny filled his body, flowing toward his dantian. But in just a short while, the destiny from those two peach fruits was completely absorbed by the wildly spinning Hunyuan Dao Fruit. Wukong grew anxious. At the realm of Yin and Yang, it was difficult to advance in cultivation. This was a critical moment for training. Without destiny… The two peach fruits had caused the white leaves on the Hunyuan Dao Fruit to grow slightly, but they were still far from as thick as the black leaves. Wukong couldn’t help but sigh bitterly. Judging from this trend, no amount of additional destiny would be enough. Back then, he had absorbed over a dozen thousand-zhang jade rods to break through the Yin and Yang realm, and the destiny required for the next realm was naturally terrifyingly large. By chance, he had used the Tianji Stick to gather enough counter-destiny power in that space above the furnace. But Yin and Yang complemented each other—positive destiny also needed to be replenished. If Wukong stopped now, it wouldn’t matter much. But right now, he was like an bottomless cave in the deep sea. No matter where he went, wherever there was destiny, it would flow toward him. His cultivation at the Yin and Yang realm might become an unpredictable disaster for the world. Not to mention plants withering and all things withering away, even cultivators passing by Wukong might be instantly drained of their energy. Others didn’t understand the stakes, but Yin and Yang knew clearly. That’s why they searched everywhere for destiny, determined to help Wukong overcome this challenge. Just as Wukong was in trouble, he saw Laojun and Lingbao Daozun flying over urgently from the east. When Laojun and Lingbao came within a hundred miles of Wukong, they suddenly felt their dantians becoming unstable, as if all their magical power was flowing toward Wukong. Shocked, they immediately stopped moving and exchanged glances. Lingbao said, “There’s indeed something strange. Quickly throw the peach fruits over.”

- Volume 4: The Revelation Unveiled Chapter 550: The Sumeru Array The demonic thoughts contained within the Great Sun Tathagata are of utmost importance to him; these thoughts are the root of his demonic essence from before he created his realm. He used arrays to trap the Great Sun Tathagata and confuse his mind in order to reclaim those demonic thoughts. The Tathagata was extremely confident in his mastery of arrays. The Great Sun Tathagata, at only the level of a Profound Immortal, had no chance of understanding the chaotic-level arrays he had set up. Once the demonic thoughts entered his body, the Tathagata felt a sense of fulfillment. Now, he finally possessed a complete version of his own Dao essence, and the long-lost unity of his demonic and Dao aspects reappeared in the world. Yet, facing Wukong—the divine ape that had inherited all the Dao essence of the Lord of Great Sumeru—he still dared not be careless. He knew that the Lord of Great Sumeru’s powers were closely tied to this world, and in terms of cultivation, he was likely inferior. The only things he could rely on were his mental state and his arrays! The Tathagata did not believe that Wukong could comprehend all the skills of the Lord of Great Sumeru in such a short time. From what he knew about the divine ape, it knew nothing about arrays, while the art of arrays was precisely his trump card for dominating the world! There were three reasons why the Tathagata wanted to seize Little Sumeru Mountain: First, he knew Pangu’s nature—he was honest, kept his promises, and though filled with justice, he was also extremely rigid. Back then, the Tathagata had tricked Pangu with words and then defeated him with his own powers, forcing him to swear an oath to serve as his jailer for millions of years, guarding his demonic thoughts. Second, Little Sumeru Mountain was rich in Sumeru stones, the perfect materials for creating realms. The Tathagata secretly colluded with Xiangliu, using the insect race’s unique abilities to cut the Sumeru stones for himself and create the Realm of the Vast Furnace. Third, and most importantly, Little Sumeru Mountain had thirty-six peaks and seventy-two ridges. What seemed ordinary at first glance—where he and Wukong stood—actually hid the fact that the mountains and ridges formed a network of deadly threats. Within these mountains, the Tathagata had already laid out the most powerful arrays in the world, which were his greatest strength. The Tathagata’s gamble paid off. Wukong had never shown any interest in the art of arrays. Although the Dao essence he inherited contained many array secrets, Wukong’s focus was on the Thirty-Six Transformations of the Heavenly Stars, and he had never delved deeply into arrays. Seeing Wukong’s fearless attitude, the Tathagata felt inward hatred. If not for having inherited the Lord of Great Sumeru’s Dao essence, he wouldn’t have had to go through all this trouble. Now that his demonic and Dao aspects were united, he was invincible in the world and could focus on researching methods to devour other Dao essences. But since Wukong stood before him, he had to overcome this obstacle!
