Volume 1: Unsayable – Chapter 31: The Demon Pill
Seeing the four heavenly generals attacking the Bull Demon King, Wukong assumed the Bull Demon King could hold his own, so he descended to search for the Stomach Earth Pheasant. The Stomach Earth Pheasant landed among the demons on the ground, charging in like a tiger among sheep, unleashing several spells. How could the demons resist? They quickly fled from the battlefield.
At that moment, the Stomach Earth Pheasant casually glanced and saw a stunning woman holding a little fox, standing trembling at the foot of a cliff, at a loss. Knowing she must be a demon, it threw a flying stone straight at Hu Yu’s chest, aiming to kill two birds with one stone.
Hu Yu was too terrified to move. Though she had some cultivation, she lacked combat experience. Seeing the flying stone coming, she didn’t know how to dodge. In that split second, Hu Zhi leaped out of her arms and took the blow head-on. With a soft crack, Hu Zhi was shattered to pieces, collapsing lifelessly on the ground. The flying stone lost its momentum and missed its target, hitting Hu Yu’s left arm instead.
Ignoring the pain, Hu Yu rushed forward to pick up Hu Zhi. Seeing that he was already lifeless, she was overwhelmed with grief and frantically lunged at the Stomach Earth Pheasant, shouting, “Return my husband’s life!”
The Stomach Earth Pheasant sneered coldly and prepared to strike again. By then, Wukong had arrived. The Stomach Earth Pheasant quickly fled to chase other demons.
Wukong saw clearly that Hu Zhi’s head had been shattered by the flying stone—even a celestial being could not save him. He sighed inwardly. Hu Zhi and Hu Yu had followed him here only to be killed on Flower-Fruit Mountain, filling him with rage. Without bothering to comfort Hu Yu, he raised his Golden Cudgel and pursued the heavenly soldiers.
Once Wukong landed, the demons regained their composure. With the commands of the four marshals, they began to counterattack. Though the heavenly soldiers were brave, they were outnumbered. In just a short while, some were killed and others captured, and the battle came to an end.
Seeing the situation turn unfavorable, the Stomach Earth Pheasant fled to mid-air and joined the battle above, surrounding the Bull Demon King. Wukong quickly followed. With two against five, he held a firm advantage. Now enraged, Wukong unleashed his ultimate fighting style, each move precise and extraordinary. Even the Bull Demon King dared not approach. After just a dozen exchanges, with a single swing of his cudgel, he sent the Heart Moon Fox plummeting from the sky. Its body fell like a kite with cut strings, and its vital spirit fled in disarray toward the horizon.
Wukong’s cudgel struck the Heart Moon Fox right at the waist, splitting its once-intact body into two. As it fell, the demonic pill in its dantian burst out—happily, it landed right in front of Hu Yu.
Hu Yu was wailing bitterly when suddenly a golden-colored demonic pill fell, capturing her attention instantly. The pill was extremely tempting to her; she reached out and tightly grasped it. With battles raging in the sky and demons cleaning up the battlefield below, no one paid attention. Though the pill had rolled out from a corpse, it was completely free of bloodstains. As soon as Hu Yu held it, she felt a warm sensation spreading through her body, soothing every pore to the extreme.
Without hesitation, she put the pill into her mouth and swallowed it…
With the Heart Moon Fox dead, the other four heavenly generals realized this defeat was irreversible. They exchanged glances and fled in four different directions. The Bull Demon King, caught up in the fight, saw that both heavenly generals had been killed by Wukong and realized he hadn’t achieved any success. Frustrated, he slung his iron staff on his shoulder and chased after them.
Seeing that the Earthly Marshal Demon King had already subdued all the heavenly soldiers, Wukong also rode his cloud and pursued the Stomach Earth Pheasant.
The Tail Fire Tiger, seeing the Bull Demon King chasing after the Moon Crow and Wukong chasing after the Stomach Earth Pheasant, felt fortunate. He was still shaken from his earlier confrontation with the Bull Demon King. Even before attaining enlightenment, he had been the king of beasts, possessing immense strength unmatched by anyone. After attaining enlightenment, his physical strength grew even more formidable. Yet now, he found himself outmatched by both the bull and the monkey. Hmph, if I can’t defeat them, I can still escape. Once back in heaven, I’ll report to the Emperor, who will surely lead the heavenly troops to crush this tiny realm.
As he pondered how to avenge himself, he suddenly saw a blur before his eyes—a thin monkey blocking his path, not the one with the iron staff. Already terrified, the Tail Fire Tiger descended from the cloud, ready to vanish underground.
Just as he was about to disappear, the thin monkey moved like a ghost, reaching out and grabbing the Tail Fire Tiger’s long tail, twisting it straight down toward the ground. With a loud crash, a huge tiger-shaped dent appeared in the hard stone surface. Once, twice, three times… The Tail Fire Tiger was dazed from the blows.
With a roar, he spat out a nameless flame from his back, aiming it straight at the thin monkey’s face. This was the Tail Fire Tiger’s ultimate skill—a flame innate to him, capable of burning everything with unstoppable force.
The monkey sneered and easily dodged it, continuing to swing his tail like a hammer. After countless blows, the stone ground within a hundred feet became powder. The Tail Fire Tiger was barely alive, unable to breathe.
The monkey set the Tail Fire Tiger down and walked slowly toward him, saying softly, “With such a low level of cultivation as a newly ascended celestial, you dare to act recklessly.” With a swift slash, he cut across the Tail Fire Tiger’s neck. The Tail Fire Tiger stared in disbelief, then his eyes gradually dimmed, and he died as well.
The monkey reached out and seized the primordial spirit of the Tail Fire Tiger, letting out a soft “Huh?” before reaching into its embrace and capturing the primordial spirit of the Ji Water Leopard.
Fangxin Rabbit moved at great speed on the clouds, but after traveling just a short distance, she suddenly felt a strong wind blowing from behind. It was too late to turn around; she felt a lightness in her neck, followed by a sense of everything spinning. Heaven! Wasn’t that celestial general in white armor standing atop the clouds none other than herself? But blood was gushing from her neck—her head…
Wukong and the Bull Demon King went through some effort to kill Bi Yue Wu and Wei Tu Zi. When they returned to Flower Fruit Mountain, Feng Tong and the King of Yu Monkeys had already been waiting for a long time. Upon seeing the corpses of the Tail Fire Tiger and Fangxin Rabbit, the Bull Demon King was stunned, then burst into laughter: “Indeed a well-planned trap—catching them all at once! How satisfying!” Wukong was also amazed by the combat prowess of Feng Tong and the King of Yu Monkeys; judging by their expressions, they had returned a while ago. He didn’t realize that the Bull Demon King was also secretly frightened. Once one reached the realm of celestial beings, their abilities to fly on clouds and vanish were no longer to be underestimated. Defeating them was easy, but killing them was difficult. With six celestial generals among the Twenty-Eight Mansions defeated this time, it was clear that Flower Fruit Mountain had grown quite powerful.
Wukong didn’t pause at all. He ordered the minor demons to clean up the mountain top, summoned the seventy-two demon kings and the four great marshals, and gave them a stern reprimand. He knew well that in this world, strength was the only true criterion. This incident had escalated significantly, and there would surely be a battle with the Heavenly Court in the future. If his subordinates lost morale in battle, defeat was inevitable.
He chose a few training methods he had learned in his past life and instructed the demon kings and marshals to train rigorously.
Standing on a high place, Wukong shouted loudly, “The Heavenly Court treats us demons like worthless dogs, killing and oppressing us at will. Now that I am the ruler of Flower Fruit Mountain, I must protect my people. The bond among our kind is stronger than that between brothers. If you dodge away, it will be your brothers who face the enemy—do you understand? From today onward, those who fear battle will be executed without mercy! Those who fail to train properly will be executed without mercy! Those who violate military orders will be executed without mercy! And those who…”
Wukong blurted out a series of harsh rules—seven prohibitions and thirteen executions—scaring the demons on the mountain into trembling silence. Ever since they arrived at Flower Fruit Mountain, they had lived like gods, idle all day long, with no sense of danger at all.
Wukong added, “Don’t blame me for being heartless. If you want to survive, do as I say!” Seeing that many of the minor demons were confused and unintelligent, he didn’t bother to explain further; they just needed to follow orders. Sometimes, gentle guidance and warnings only work for those who are smart enough to understand them.
After supervising matters on Flower-Fruit Mountain for over half a month, Wukong saw that everything was under control. He gave instructions to the Bull Demon King, telling him not to go anywhere outside but to stay and guard the mountain. The Bull Demon King laughed and said, “Younger brother, you’re overthinking it. Don’t you know that one day in heaven equals one year on earth? No one will survive here. The heavenly court will wait for a while before sending someone to investigate—there won’t be any news for at least two or three years. Go ahead; I guarantee nothing will happen to you within two years.” Hearing this, Wukong felt relieved. He could surely return within those two years. The Bull Demon King didn’t ask where Wukong was going. Looking at his honest smile, Wukong felt a bit guilty, but remembering what Fengtong had said—that no one in the world could be trusted—he didn’t say more and left with Fengtong and Wang Yu on the cloud. The three of them were extremely anxious; every extra moment meant more suffering for Wu Zhiqi. It only took half a day to reach the land of Beiju Luzhou by flying. As Wukong traveled, he suddenly stopped. He saw that half of a mountain peak on the ground had collapsed—this was the place where he had hidden back then. Recalling how Prince Zhang had pointed his spear at his chest as he leaped off the cliff, it felt like a lifetime ago. Wukong was stunned for a moment before continuing on. Back then, he had been hidden in Prince Zhang’s sleeves and didn’t know the way. Now, with his cloud-riding skills, he circled a few times before seeing the Great Sage Zen Temple in the distance. Wukong said from the cloud, “This matter is very important. It’s better not to cause too much commotion. Do you have any plans?” Fengtong replied, “It’s simply a matter of luring the tiger away from the mountain. Let Wang Yu draw that Bodhisattva out, and the two of us will enter the cave to rescue Wu Zhiqi. How does that sound?” Wukong nodded. “Let’s do that for now. If anything goes wrong, with our abilities, it will be easy to escape.” Wang Yu jumped down immediately. Wukong hurriedly called out, “That’s not right. If you go like that, as soon as the Great Sage National Advisor, Bodhisattva Wang, sees your appearance, he’ll surely think of Wu Zhiqi. It’s better to change your appearance so he can’t figure anything out.” Wang Yu thought for a moment and transformed into a huge white rhinoceros. Wukong exclaimed, “Why transform into him?” Wang Yu asked, “I haven’t seen anyone else. If that doesn’t work, shall I transform into the Bull Demon King instead?” Wukong suppressed a smile and waved his hand, saying, “No need. Go ahead.” After thinking, Wukong realized he was still accustomed to taking human form—after all, he had been human in his past life, and it was a deep-seated tendency that was likely hard to change. Fengtong and Wang Yu, on the other hand, saw no problem in transforming into beasts. Equality among all beings—how difficult is that?
