Volume 2: The Path That Can Be Told Chapter 106: Setting One’s Resolve to Kill
Seeing someone chasing him, Wukong didn’t engage in a fight but stepped aside. The man flew over and, after catching up, cast a vicious glance at Wukong, puzzled that Wukong had given way to his opponent. In a flash, he scattered several dark, bone-piercing nails in the air, aiming to strike Wukong’s vital points.
Wukong smiled instead of getting angry. This man truly knew no fear—just as he was looking for someone suitable to assert his power, someone had thrown themselves into his grasp. Using the technique “Standing Without a Shadow,” he vanished from his spot. The attacker, still astonished, was struck by a massive staff from above, reducing his strong body to pieces. At that moment, the man fleeing ahead sensed something strange behind him. Turning around, he was shocked to see that the high-skilled eighth-rank Earth Immortal had been killed by the scholar who had given way to him.
Seeing Wukong smile at him again, he was terrified and fell to the ground, crying out, “Please spare my life, sir!”
Wukong naturally disdained to deal with him and lightly flew to an empty mountain peak to sit.
The peak wasn’t large, surrounded by six adjacent mountains, each only two or three miles apart—fast enough to reach in an instant for them. As Wukong sat down, he remembered he had forgotten to ask the burly man how many days until the Death Gate would open.
He saw that the burly man had been defeated and stood in mid-air, looking around for a weaker opponent. Suddenly, the man spotted the white-robed scholar who had asked him questions earlier, sitting calmly on a mountain peak, smiling at him. He was shocked—if he remembered correctly, the original owner of that peak was a very powerful Earth Immortal. So this white-robed scholar must be a highly skilled hidden master.
He lamented inwardly that it would be great if he had such abilities. It was frustrating that those thieves were still at large in that realm; he didn’t know when he could avenge himself.
Seeing the sorrow on the burly man’s face, Wukong felt moved. Since the man came from that realm, he likely knew many secrets. Why not help him and gather some information, benefiting both sides?
So Wukong flew over and approached the burly man.
The burly man was shocked again when he saw Wukong approaching and warned, “It wasn’t easy to seize this peak. Don’t leave so easily, or someone else will take it, and all your efforts will be in vain.”
Wukong laughed and said, “It’s fine. I can take it back if needed.”
The burly man said, “I regret not recognizing you as a great master.”
Wukong smiled without answering. He wasn’t boasting—here, he indeed counted as a great master.
Wukong asked, “I wonder how many more days until this Death Gate opens. If you know, please spare no effort to advise me.”
The burly man sighed and said, “At most, it will open in two more days.”
Wukong made a “hum” sound and asked again, “You keep sighing—what’s on your mind? Since you’ve given me advice, I should repay you in some way.”
The burly man’s eyes lit up, and he hurriedly said, “You make me feel ashamed, sir. Such a trivial matter isn’t worth mentioning. It’s just… just…”
Wukong said, “If you’re a hero, there’s no need to be shy. Just speak plainly!”
The burly man replied, “If you can help me cross over, I’ll be at your disposal!” Then he shook his head. “Alas, my meager skills are surely beneath your notice.”
Wukong asked, “So your name is Zhang Hui. Are you familiar with that realm?”
Hearing this, Zhang Hui felt as if he’d grasped a lifeline. “Familiar? Very familiar! I’ve been in that realm for decades, so I know it well.”
Wukong said, “That’s great. After we cross over, you’ll come with me. Whenever I have questions, I’ll ask you, okay?”
Zhang Hui was overjoyed and tried to kneel in thanks, but Wukong stopped him. “No need for that. We’re helping each other—no debts owed. Look down below. Which mountain do you like?”
Hearing this, Zhang Hui nearly fell from the clouds. Who was this cloaked scholar? His words were too bold.
Wukong added, “Since you’re hesitant, let me choose for you.”
He returned to his own mountain and shouted at the person on the nearest mountain, “Friend, I have a friend who wants to cross over. Could you please make way for us?”
Sitting on that mountain was a Taoist priest—someone Wukong had just killed, and he had seen everything clearly. Hearing Wukong’s words, his expression shifted unpredictably. He wondered if he could match Wukong’s elusive movements. After much hesitation, he finally made up his mind and left resentfully, giving way.
Wukong waved at Zhang Hui. Overjoyed, Zhang Hui, whose dream had lasted years, finally came true. He landed but hadn’t yet steadied himself when a man in black from a nearby mountain shouted, “With such weak skills, how dare you sit here? Your days are numbered!”
Seeing that everyone here was equally domineering, Wukong knew he needed to show some strength or more provocation would follow. He leaped to the black-clothed man’s side, pointed at him from above, and said calmly, “Shut up! Get lost!”
The man in black paid no attention and laughed mockingly, “The Ancestor has been sitting here for ages, and no one dares approach. I’m already itching to fight.” Wukong smiled and said, “It must be because you’re ugly—others are afraid of dirtying their hands.”
The man in black raised his eyebrows. “What boldness! How about I make you suffer through all poisons before dying?”
Upon hearing the mention of poisons, Wukong realized this man was an expert in toxins, and he immediately became wary. There weren’t many poisonous creatures in Journey to the West, but the scorpion spirit of the Women’s Country stood out—their abilities were ordinary, yet they still caused Wukong great trouble.
The man in black remained seated as his body floated off the rock. With a light tap of his index fingers, two streams of white smoke shot out. The smoke was extremely fine and dense, resembling two sharp needles in the air. Out of caution, Wukong didn’t dare confront it head-on and dodged aside.
The man in black stopped using poisons and instead drew a spirit snake whip to attack. Wukong blocked it with his staff.
One of these weapons was extremely hard, while the other was extremely soft, yet when they collided, they produced a sound like metal striking stone. After a few exchanges, Wukong felt that this man in black was just ordinary—far inferior to Bi Yue Wu and Wei Tu Zhi. So without further delay, he unleashed his Sky-Piercing Staff techniques, creating countless shadows of the staff that made it impossible to track him.
The man in black had never seen such advanced techniques. After just a few moves, he was forced to retreat several miles, shouting urgently, “Fellow cultivator, stop! It’s a misunderstanding!”
Wukong didn’t pursue him. “I’ll spare your life, but don’t let me see you again!” The man in black nodded repeatedly and hurriedly fled.
When Wukong returned to the mountain top, he saw Zhang Hui blinking at him repeatedly. Knowing he had something to say, Wukong went over to ask. Zhang Hui replied, “That man is quite famous in the Realm of Killing. He’s known as the Black Robed Ancestor, and it’s said he has already reached the level of a celestial being.”
Wukong said, “To me, he seemed quite ordinary.”
Zhang Hui replied, “He might be ordinary—I can’t tell either. But he’s still much stronger than me. However, the Black Robed Ancestor has several accomplices in the Realm of Killing, all of whom are highly renowned figures.”
Wukong wasn’t concerned. “It doesn’t matter. If they don’t come after me, it’s their good fortune.” Although he had never entered the Realm of Killing, he now had a rough idea: that realm must be the opposite of Laojun’s world, where the strong reign supreme. If that was the case, why should he keep a low profile? Having reaped benefits in this world, Wukong began to ponder the intentions of the creator of this realm. If they wanted killing, then he would make a name for himself through killing—perhaps fortune lay hidden in this very act of slaughter.
Seeing Wukong’s fearless attitude, Zhang Hui felt even more admiration for him and secretly rejoiced that he had such good fortune to be associated with such a great figure.
