Volume 2: The Path That Can Be Told Chapter 133: Saving the World Is Hard
Wukong stood in midair, looking down at the chaotic battle in the city. Immortals wielded their magic, and their weapons and artifacts were incredibly powerful. In an instant, the once-pristine city was filled with dust and mist, with flying swords flashing with cold light and blood splashing high into the sky. A spell that caused mountains to crumble reduced magnificent buildings to ruins in an instant. All sorts of talismans flew everywhere. When the dust settled, the ground was covered with corpses. After this battle, Wenxin City would inevitably be in ruins, a sight of utter devastation.
Some powerful and highly skilled immortals and demons, relying on their status, disdained to participate in such plundering and had already left Wenxin City on clouds. Those who were a bit smarter and preferred to avoid trouble also fled as soon as the chaos began.
What remained in the city were mostly those who were inherently greedy and violent, skilled at seizing what they wanted by force, looking to take advantage of the chaos.
There was a group of fierce demons who had grown quite powerful, numbering forty or fifty. They united and looted the city mercilessly. Still not satisfied, they turned their attention to the immortals and demons watching from afar in the sky.
Wukong and his two companions were short in stature and had ordinary appearances, not resembling formidable fighters. So, one of the demons shouted, “Catch those three!” The forty or fifty demons surrounded them, blocking their escape.
Wukong had long seen these demons bullying the weak and committing every kind of evil deed. He thought, “If I don’t bother you, you come to trouble me.” With a low growl, he shouted, “Kill!” He drew his Golden Cudgel and charged into the crowd without hesitation. Wang Yu followed with his Demon-Slaying Sword, while Feng Tong carried a golden whip. The three of them moved like tigers among sheep, defeating their opponents in just a few moments. Wang Yu’s Demon-Slaying Sword was taken from Nezha during the heavenly army’s attack and fit his hand well. It was designed specifically for slaying demons, emitting red light as it swung, and the blood of the defeated demons was sucked dry by this excellent sword.
Feng Tong’s golden whip was given to him by Wang Yu after taking it from Wang Lingguan, seeing that Feng Tong had no weapon. It was Feng Tong’s first time using it. After swinging it a few times and finding it cumbersome, he put it away. Then he revealed two sharp claws, their edges as sharp as knives, even brighter than the Demon-Slaying Sword. His movements were elusive, and with each flash, at least one demon died.
Wukong didn’t need to use his full power against these weaker foes; he simply smashed around wildly. Since he was determined to kill, he showed no mercy. His Golden Cudgel moved with fierce precision, each strike deadly.
Among those demons were a few with the cultivation level of immortals, but when Wukong and his companions went all out, there was no way they could escape. In less than half an incense burn time, they killed every last one of those demons.
Tongfeng shook his blood- and flesh-stained hands and said, “It’s satisfying.” Wang Yu shook his head and said, “Not enough!” Wukong laughed and said, “If it’s not enough, let’s go into the city and kill more. If we see anyone taking advantage of the chaos or bullying the weak, we can kill them without hesitation!”
Tongfeng was overjoyed and said, “Exactly. Stabilizing people’s hearts is the top priority now. Killing a few to warn many is truly a act of saving the world!” Wang Yu said, “What great virtue!”
Wukong said, “Saving the world? How difficult that is!”
In this world, some people only wish to save themselves and nothing else, yet they are unable to; some can barely protect themselves and have no extra strength to help others; and some can still save others while protecting themselves. The difference among these three lies in their abilities. Many have the desire to save the world but lack the ability to do so. Wukong thought to himself, I wonder if I have the ability or not. I’ll just do my best and hope to have no regrets.
Inside Wenxin City, groups of monsters teamed up to attack lone cultivators, attacking them in groups with deadly moves, making it extremely difficult for those isolated cultivators to defend themselves.
Wukong and his two companions separated to act. With their cultivation levels, they naturally had little difficulty facing opponents. Even if they encountered equals, they could still protect themselves.
Wukong flew alone and saw four immortals surrounding a monstrous beast ahead. The beast was covered in tough armor, with short legs—it was actually an old turtle. The four immortals were of the eighth or ninth rank among earth immortals. While casting spells, they said, “We’ve heard that turtle shells are excellent protection. Indeed, it’s hard to break through.” One of them said, “With this shell, we’ll have a better chance of overcoming disasters.”
After hearing a few words, Wukong realized they were again trying to kill and steal. He flew forward quickly and swiped with his staff, breaking the four earth immortals’ bones and sending their bodies crashing to the ground, no longer in human form.
The old turtle remained hidden inside its shell, not daring to come out. Hearing something unusual above, it slowly stretched its head out and saw a monkey holding an iron rod, nodding at it. The four immortals that had been attacking it were already dead.
The old turtle said gratefully, “Thank you, great immortal, for your help!”
Wukong noticed that the old turtle had the cultivation level of a fourth-rank heaven immortal and became suspicious. He asked, “Why didn’t you fight back?”
The old turtle replied, “I was born unable to fight. Anyway, thanks to this tough shell, no one has ever been able to break through it.” Wukong was speechless—so it was just a target.
Wukong bid farewell to the old turtle and flew away. After causing trouble in a few more places, he unknowingly circled back and encountered the old turtle again. This time, it was trapped among three monstrous beasts but still refused to come out. Its tough shell was indeed remarkable—no matter what spells or weapons were used against it, only a white mark appeared on the shell, with no sign of damage at all.
Wukong defeated these three monstrous beasts. The old turtle poked its head out and, seeing it was Wukong again, said helplessly, “Everyone admires my armor; I’m ashamed.” Wukong thought to himself that relying solely on his own combat skills could only quench immediate needs. With Qinxin City stretching for thousands of miles, he wondered how many conflicts and chaos might exist there. He must find a solution.
He looked into the distance and saw a very tall stone pagoda in the center of Qinxin City, which gave him an idea. He then used his mental power to summon Fengtong and Wang Yu back. Monkeys had an innate connection; even though Wukong wasn’t fully awakened, he could still sense Fengtong and Wang Yu’s presence within hundreds of miles. If it were Fengtong and Wang Yu, they could communicate even from a thousand miles away.
Fengtong and Wang Yu rushed back, covered in blood but filled with fierce determination. Fengtong asked, “Wukong, why did you call me?” Wukong replied, “With our three combined strength, we can temporarily put out fires, but there are millions of cultivators here. If we extinguish fires in one place, new ones will arise elsewhere. We need to devise a strategy—gathering capable people and innocents together is the only long-term solution.”
Fengtong asked, “Good. But how do we do that?”
Wukong said, “Look at that stone pagoda in the city. The three of us will take it as our center and spread out to fight. While saving people, we’ll also gather others. Those with fighting skills should follow us into battle, while those with weaker abilities should return to defend around the pagoda. With us three outside, no one can enter here. What do you think?”
Fengtong thought for a moment and said, “Good. Regardless of whether they’re immortals or demons, it’s not wise to just charge in alone. It’s better to gather a hundred people and form teams to clear out thieves and bandits in the streets and alleys. This way, we can ensure safety.”
Wukong said, “Good, let’s set off right away!”
Wukong grabbed the old turtle and flew toward the distant stone pagoda, with Fengtong and Wang Yu closely following.
The pagoda was extremely tall and called the “Dragon Suppressing Pagoda.” Wukong thought to himself that there were no dragons in this place. He set down the old turtle and said with a smile, “You’ll be the first to stay here. Stay put and don’t wander around.”
The three of them circled the pagoda, defeating some scattered monsters, then started patrolling outward from the Dragon Suppressing Pagoda. With their great powers, they would just glide through the sky, offering help whenever they saw danger. After saving each person, they told them to wait at the base of the pagoda.
The rescued people, having escaped death, were in a state of shock and naturally obeyed without question. In just a short while, a hundred cultivators had gathered at the base of the Dragon Suppressing Pagoda. These hundred people, regardless of whether they were immortals or demons, were all survivors of the disaster and were extremely grateful to Wukong and his companions. They didn’t know their names and simply referred to them as the divine monkeys. Moreover, since Wukong, Fengtong, and Wang Yu looked similar, they initially thought the three were actually one person. It was only after the old turtle explained that they realized they were three separate divine monkeys.
With over a hundred people, a significant force was formed. Among these, six or seven had the cultivation level of Heavenly Immortals, and more than twenty had that of Earthly Immortals. They assembled into a mighty team, united in purpose regardless of their past actions—good or evil—determined to rescue those in peril, uphold justice, and bring order to the chaos.
Before long, a second group of a hundred emerged. This method proved highly effective; though it was somewhat slow at first, once several such groups were formed, their strength grew like a snowball. As one saying goes, as one force rises, another falls. Once this force grew strong, those who sought to take advantage of the chaos naturally dared not show themselves and disappeared.
Wukong and his two companions used this method to establish over a dozen more landmarks in the city. Eventually, the entire city of Wenxin was filled with groups of a hundred. Those cultivators who had been stuck in a dilemma saw the growing strength of these groups and also descended from the sky to join them. These cultivators had clearly higher cultivation levels; they had managed to withdraw before the chaos erupted and possessed broader insights. Once they joined the groups of a hundred, they naturally became leaders.
Although the rebellious cultivators were also numerous, they fought alone and lacked coordination. Within half a day, all the villains and troublemakers in the city were eliminated, and the chaos vanished without a trace.
After this battle, the many cultivators did not disperse but remained in their respective groups, ready like soldiers awaiting their commander’s orders.
Seeing that the situation was under control, Wukong returned to one of the landmarks. Upon seeing him, the cultivators became excited and agitated.
One person shouted, “That’s the Senior Divine Monkey! He’s the one who saved me!” Another said, “What’s so special about that? Isn’t he the one who saved everyone?”
“You don’t know—there are three Divine Monkeys.”
“Oh, three of them? All with such great powers. They must have been sent by heaven to save our lives…”
Chatter filled the air, and before they knew it, they regarded Wukong and his companions as gods.
Wukong saw that aside from some ruins and corpses, Wenxin City hadn’t suffered much damage. He had simply acted promptly, coming up with this method in a moment of urgency, never expecting to accomplish such a great thing unintentionally.
At Wukong’s arrival, the cultivators flocked over. In no time, all the groups of a hundred returned intact. Tens of thousands gathered beneath the Dragon Subduing Tower, with thousands more standing in the sky. Wukong stood on the clouds, used a spell to amplify his voice, and called out, “Fellow cultivators, you’ve worked hard!” But as soon as the words left his mouth, he realized something was wrong—why did his tone sound so strange yet familiar?
