Chapter 569: The Fallen Powerhouses
Ye Feng spent half a month in Merlin’s Library, going through most of the materials. In fact, there wasn’t much information about the main planes in this library—what there was was only about the lower-level main planes, with no mention at all of the intermediate or advanced ones.
He planned to keep reading, but then his communicator rang. Picking it up, he found a message from Long Tian. The content of the message made him frown deeply. It read, “Brent, Kechi, and Habi have all perished. The cause of their death is unknown, and their bodies have not been found yet…”
Normally, powerhouses who had surpassed the Saint realm possessed strong survival skills, especially in a place like the Saint World, where few could harm them. Apart from special cases like Ye Feng, only those with true star-level or higher cultivation could possibly cause their deaths.
Although Brent, Kechi, and Habi had only met Ye Feng’s group once, hearing this news made Ye Feng feel somewhat sad. After all, they had just met not long ago, and in just half a month, those three were gone.
“What happened?” Ye Feng put down the book he was reading and sent a message back to Long Tian.
“It’s obvious they were killed, and now we’re under heavy suspicion. The ruler of the Fifth Holy Land was at the inn just now. I talked to him, but he clearly still doesn’t trust us and kept asking about your whereabouts,” Long Tian replied, causing Ye Feng to frown even more.
“I’m leaving right away. Wait a moment.” Ye Feng put the book back in its place and took a step forward, appearing instantly in the room where Long Tian and the others were. This was the advantage of the space transmission technique—allowing one to teleport to any place they had been before.
Seeing Ye Feng appear suddenly, Long Tian and the others were no longer surprised. They had already seen some of Ye Feng’s space-related powers.
“Where have you been these past days? You said you were in the library, but the Soul Force couldn’t detect your presence at all,” Long Tian asked, frowning.
“There’s a restriction on the ninth floor of the library. Only true essence beyond the Saint realm can pass through; the Soul Force can’t detect it,” Ye Feng explained. “What did that ruler say to you?”
“He said the deaths of those three must have been caused by humans, and on purpose,” Long Tian paused for a moment before looking at Ye Feng. “He also said that only two or more powerful beings at the star level could prevent them from sending even a rescue message.”
“Could it be someone framing us?” Ye Feng couldn’t help asking. He felt this matter wasn’t that simple.
“That possibility can’t be ruled out, but we’ve just ascended and haven’t shown our strength yet. How would anyone know to frame us? Besides, only those inside know we’ve become the rulers. If it’s really a frame-up, then they must have an insider—so the chances are low.”
“Weren’t they supposed to carry out some mission? Could they have encountered danger during it?” Zhuge Ling’er asked.
“Stop guessing. Let’s find the bodies first!” Pearl interrupted their speculation. “Once we find the bodies, we can quickly determine the cause of their deaths and get some information about those who did this.”
“But we have no idea where they died. In such a vast Holy Realm, it’s impossible to locate their death site,” Ye Feng said helplessly, shaking his head.
“I know how!” Pearl said, extending her left palm. A black butterfly gradually flew up from her palm, flapped its wings a few times, and landed on Pearl’s shoulder. “Take out those glass beads that those three Berent gave us.”
Long Tian quickly took out the three glass-ball-like objects and handed them to Pearl.
Pearl placed one of the glass beads in front of her. The butterfly flew up from her shoulder, circled the bead once, and then landed on a spot. After a while, it flew away again, vanished after flapping its wings twice.
“How did it disappear?” Zhuge Ling’er, who had been watching intently, exclaimed when the butterfly suddenly vanished.
“The Hellish Nether Butterfly is a creature that hunts death. As long as it comes into contact with the deceased’s belongings from their lifetime, it can, like a hunting dog tracking prey, find where the deceased is buried,” Pearl explained. “In fact, I’ve never used this ability before—this is the first time too. It disappeared because it teleported to another location. Follow me.”
With that, Pearl vanished as well, and Ye Feng and the others immediately followed.
After several teleportations, the black butterfly finally reappeared before everyone’s eyes.
“Haven’t found it yet?” Zhuge Ling’er immediately felt disappointed with Pearl’s Hellish Butterfly.
“Don’t worry. All these places were visited by one of those three guys. The Hellish Butterfly is comparing them to find the real burial site.”
Half a cup of tea later, the Hellish Butterfly finally stopped teleporting and began circling one location.
“Is it here?” Ye Feng couldn’t help asking.
“Start digging!” Pearl pointed at the ground.
Ye Feng and the others immediately got to work. When the large pit was dug about five meters deep, they suddenly discovered a hand. They accelerated their digging and soon found the first body—Berent’s.
The storage ring on his finger had been taken away, and there were no wounds on his body at all; only his head and body were separated, with a perfectly clean cut, clearly made by an extremely sharp blade.
The second and third bodies were also quickly dug out. It seemed the killer had nothing to hide and simply threw the three bodies together in this place.
What puzzled Ye Feng and the others, yet made sense, was that all three died in exactly the same way—their heads were cut off in an instant, without even time to react. There were no other wounds on their bodies, which surprised Ye Feng even more. This meant the killer must have acted in a flash, killing all three at once. Even Ye Feng wasn’t sure he could do such a thing. Of course, if the killer was someone the three knew well, the chances of success would increase greatly. But someone capable of this level of skill was definitely no weaker than him.
“Let’s take the bodies back first. Have the Ruler and the other controllers take a look,” Pearl suggested.
Ye Feng prepared three coffins, threw the three bodies in, and then put them back in the storage ring.
