Chapter 314: The Netherhell Dark Butterfly
When Wu Ze used a bronze key to open the basement of his residence, Ye Feng’s expression was no longer purely one of surprise.
Ye Feng and the others followed Wu Ze inside one after another, as the basement door closed automatically.
It was a long corridor. Wu Ze and the others lit a few torches before continuing forward in the darkness.
Throughout the journey, no one spoke. Ye Feng didn’t feel comfortable saying much either and simply followed Wu Ze obediently.
There were many forks in the dark, winding corridor. After about half an hour and passing through over a dozen intersections, the scene ahead suddenly became clear.
Ye Feng was stunned by what he saw.
It was an endless graveyard. As far as the eye could see, there were hundreds of thousands of tombstones of various sizes and shapes. Above their heads wasn’t a ceiling but a dark sky.
“This graveyard is a portable space. No matter where we wander, we can take it with us,” explained the young man beside Ye Feng, noticing his astonishment. “All the deceased from the Black Witch Clan’s history are here. Although some are just symbolic graves, everyone has a tombstone—none are missing. In the future, we will also be buried here.”
“No wonder there are so many,” Ye Feng realized then. Since all the deceased members of the Black Witch Clan were buried here, it wasn’t surprising to see so many tombstones.
“Brother Blade, do you have any requirements for the Gu Kings?” Wu Ze asked, turning to Ye Feng with a serious expression.
“The stronger their aura, the better,” Ye Feng replied with a simple request.
“How many do we need?” Wu Ze continued.
“Two or three will suffice. I’m also worried that one might not be attractive enough,” Ye Feng hesitated before speaking, not wanting to say too much.
“Then let’s get started!” Wu Ze glanced at the man in golden armor and the young man.
“Which three Gu Kings shall we choose?” The man in golden armor also looked serious.
“I’ll take the Netherhell Dark Butterfly. You two choose any two divine-tier powerhouses—the stronger, the better,” Wu Ze said. Immediately, everyone’s expression changed drastically.
“The Netherhell Dark Butterfly?!”
“That thing… it’s too dangerous…” The man in golden armor also sounded hesitant.
“But it’s powerful enough!” Wu Ze seemed determined.
However, the others didn’t stop him.
“What is the Netherhell Dark Butterfly?” Ye Feng quietly asked the young man beside him.
“It’s a Gu King left behind by a great shaman. Since great shamans are immortal, there are no graves for them here. The Purgatory Dark Butterfly is a Gu King that a great shaman lost in a battle,” the boy replied honestly.
“But if the Gu King dies, won’t the host also die?” Ye Feng asked, puzzled.
“That’s true for ordinary people. In fact, great shamans are different from us—they can host multiple Gu Kings in their bodies, and whenever one dies, they can find a new one to replace it. But we can’t do that,” the boy explained.
“In that case, it’s as if they have many lives…” Ye Feng was speechless.
“Yes. Moreover, the Gu Kings in a great shaman’s body will voluntarily take the damage and sacrifice themselves to save the host. But our Gu Kings can’t do that; it would only speed up our death.” The boy nodded. “That’s also one of the reasons why great shamans are immortal.”
“Why did your father say that thing is dangerous?” Ye Feng asked, confused. “Isn’t that Gu King already dead?”
“In fact, the Purgatory Dark Butterfly is a special kind ofGu worm worm. It’s a unique creature that exists at the boundary between the netherworld and purgatory. These creatures are born in the netherworld but grow in the harsh environment of purgatory. Their strength far exceeds that of Gu Kings of the same rank. And it’s said that even after death, out of instinct, they remain aggressive. Of course, this is just a rumor; we’ve never seen one. There have been very few great shamans in the Black Witch Clan, and most of them don’t stay in this world for long.”
“Still aggressive after death?” Ye Feng was surprised by this explanation.
“Son, I’m going to check out Wu Zhan’s grave. You go find one by yourself!” The man in golden armor said before flying away quickly.
“Dad, you’re so sneaky! Wu Zhan is clearly my idol!” The little boy called out, frustrated, as he watched his father’s retreating figure.
“He’s also my ‘dream lover,’ hehehe…” The man in golden armor’s mischievous laughter came from afar. “I’ve fought against him many times in my dreams…”
“Alright then, I’m going to look for Wu Yan’s grave…” The boy then leaped up and flew in another direction.
By now, Wu Ze had already stopped in front of a small, nameless tombstone. Ye Feng knew that grave must belong to the Purgatory Dark Butterfly.
“Excuse me!” Wu Ze said softly as he looked at the nameless tombstone. He formed strange hand seals with his hands.
After a long while, the incantation finally ended, and a slight tremor spread from beneath everyone’s feet. Ye Feng knew that thing was about to break through the ground; he could even clearly sense an extremely oppressive aura approaching. Above the sky, a faint, dull rumbling sound could be heard, which, if not listened to carefully, might be mistaken for a sound coming from underground. At that moment, even the man in golden armor and the young boy who had gone to search for the other two tombstones stopped in their tracks and looked in the direction of Wu Ze—they too had sensed something. “What a powerful aura!” The man in golden armor spoke softly, yet his words reached everyone’s ears. Even with his semi-divine cultivation level, his serious tone made everyone feel uneasy. Although Ye Feng couldn’t precisely gauge the strength of that aura, he could clearly sense that the sense of danger it carried was far greater than that of a semi-divine being. Wu Ze, however, did not stop; instead, he waited patiently with a calm expression. After what seemed like a long time, a palm-sized box rose from the ground and floated in the air. The powerful aura had disappeared, leaving everyone puzzled. Wu Ze looked at the palm-sized box before him—entirely black with intricate red patterns carved on it. He took a deep breath and then used his left hand to support the box. Everyone held their breath, staring at the box in Wu Ze’s hands, eager to see what the Purgatory Dark Butterfly actually looked like. Wu Ze’s right hand also reached for the lid and slowly lifted it… Inside the box was a completely black butterfly with a few red patterns on its wings. It looked beautiful, but it didn’t possess the powerful aura everyone had expected; instead, there was only silence. Wu Ze and the others were inevitably disappointed. “There was such a grand display just now, but now that the actual creature appears, there’s not even an ounce of aura. Presumably, all its aura was released when it came out of the ground!” The second elder beside him also showed an unmistakable expression of disappointment. Although this explanation made some sense, Ye Feng found it strange. He sent his mental energy into the Void Realm and began to consult the book, “Compendium of Wu Clan Gu Worms.” “The Purgatory Dark Butterfly is a special creature that is born in the Netherworld and grows in the Purgatory. It can be considered a nether beast, a magical beast, or even a gu worm.”
“Most life in the Netherworld exists as soul entities without a physical form. The Purgatory Dark Butterflies are also born without a physical body, existing solely as soul entities. Yet, in the extreme conditions of Purgatory, they developed their own physical forms and managed to survive there, which proves just how tenacious such life forms can be.”
“Purgatory is located in the dimensional rift between the Demon Realm and Hell. Due to the forces of dimensional tearing and the chaos of various energies, its environment is a hundred times worse than that of the Demon Realm and Hell. Even experts at the Absolute Demon level would suffer severe damage, if not death, after just one day there. There aren’t many creatures in Purgatory, but because of its harsh environment, their strength is comparable to that of divine beasts in the Divine Realm. The fact that the Purgatory Dark Butterflies can survive in such an environment in large numbers speaks to their remarkable strength.”
“Since their bodies were forged in Purgatory, the Purgatory Dark Butterflies possess extremely robust physiques. Their physical defense and attack capabilities far surpass those of magical beasts of the same rank. As they are creatures of the Netherworld, they also have powerful soul attack techniques and strong soul defense abilities. Yet, these are not the main reasons they can survive in such a harsh environment.”
“The reason the Purgatory Dark Butterflies can occupy a territory in Purgatory is their ability to never die—a capability known to very few.”
“Like phoenixes, the Purgatory Dark Butterflies also possess the ability to regenerate through nirvana. Although their method of nirvana is completely different from that of phoenixes, its effect is equally remarkable. After each regeneration, their strength returns to its original level, but their innate talents and physical constitutions are greatly enhanced… Because of their ability to regenerate, their bodies never rot even after death…”
Ye Feng was utterly stunned by this description. He never expected such a small creature, seemingly no bigger than a palm, to have such potential and strength.
“It seems these Black Witch Clan members still don’t know about this.” Ye Feng slowly retracted his mental energy. “TheseGu worm insects can also be tamed as magical beasts, which means I don’t have to turn them intoGu worm insects to control them. I need to find a way to get one, as a reward for helping them this time. Anyway, even if those parasites enter its body, I still have the Ultimate Repair ability to remove them all…”
Wu Ze and the others had no idea that they had already been outwitted by this seemingly honest guy, Ye Feng…
