Chapter 018: The Demon God Axe
That faint sigh was utterly bizarre, as if coming from the depths of hell, causing people to shudder involuntarily, even freezing their breath.
As the sigh faded, the towering figure before them became clearly visible.
He stood two meters tall, his muscles perfectly defined and full of explosive power. His handsome face was even more delicate than that of a woman, and the silver in his eyes seemed to burn one’s soul.
His golden hair swayed in the wind, and his spread white wings slowly disappeared. There seemed to be a faint smirk on his holy face.
He glanced indifferently at the three beings before him, his gaze sweeping over Du Fan and Ringo without lingering, before settling on Gannon.
“Huh… Isn’t this Lord Toronus? How did you end up in such a state?” He shook his head and sighed. “Respected and mighty Lord Toronus, why did you abandon the immortal body bestowed upon you by the Heavenly Father and choose the extremely weak human body instead? Do you really think you can achieve anything in this state?”
Gannon stepped forward, glared at him, and said coldly, “Sparalithis, stop wasting words… I’ve already brought the human blood from outside this world as required. So shouldn’t this gate open now? The demon god who has slept for ten thousand years should wake up long ago, and those hypocritical gods in the heavens should also receive their due punishment.”
“Oh… From outside this world?” The guy named Sparalithis glanced at Du Fan. “Indeed, nothing of the past or future can be seen in this guy… Just as the Heavenly Father said, his existence is purely accidental… It’s impressive that you were able to find him.”
Gannon, or rather Archangel Toronus, snorted and said, “You worthless traitor to the Demon God! Since I’ve met the requirements, your duty as a gatekeeper is done… Go back to the heavens and report to your master. I don’t have time to chat with you.”
“Ah… Lord Toronus remains as indifferent as ever.” A faint smile appeared on Spalitis’s beautiful face. “Although I betrayed the Demon God back then… so what? Even foolish and insignificant humans understand that people strive for greatness and water flows downhill… We are merely angels created by the Supreme Priest, and our purpose isn’t to serve any one god. What meaning does anything else have except spreading the glory of the heavens?”
“Excuses,” Gannon snorted. “If it weren’t for your betrayal of the Demon God… how could he have been defeated? But what did you gain from betraying him? Though my divine mind has been sealed, I at least still have freedom. Yet you, Lord Spalitis, have been trapped here for ten thousand years, guarding the gates of the Demon God for the gods of the heavens… Don’t you find that ridiculous?”
Anger appeared on Spalitis’s face, but despite his fury, his features remained flawless. He let out a low sigh and said, “Very well… Lord Toronus… all this is in the past. What’s the point of bringing it up now? As agreed, you’ve brought the blood of someone who doesn’t belong to this world, so you qualify to lift the seal on the Demon God… But before that, you still need to pass a trial.”
“A trial?” Gannon grunted. “What kind of trial?”
Spalitis smiled slightly and said, “Look, the gates of the Demon God’s Temple are open now, but at sunset, they will close again—and once closed, they can never be opened… Come… let’s see what time it is. Oh… I see… Lord Toronus, you have one hour left. If you can’t defeat me by then, you’ll never be able to enter the Demon God’s Temple… Oh, just a friendly reminder—as far as I know, the Demon God’s Temple isn’t exactly a fun place… So, Lord Toronus, how much time do you think you need to deal with me?”
Gannon’s expression changed. “No… that’s not right… It’s not like that… I just need to bring someone who doesn’t belong to this world—someone whose blood can lift the seal, so that I can enter the Demon God’s Temple!”
Spalitis smiled faintly and said, “That’s indeed true… But the mighty Lord Toronus… You might have forgotten—can we really trust everything the gods of the heavens say? Come on… let’s begin… It’s been ten thousand years since we last acted… Lord Toronus, I wonder if you’ve regressed or improved?”
“As for you two…” Spalitis glanced at Du Fan and Ringo, “Insignificant humans… I suggest you find a place to hide properly… If anything goes wrong, I won’t be responsible… After all, I’m not an angel who controls life!”
Du Fan smiled bitterly inwardly. Now, these so-called angelic lords were about to take action, truly a case of one problem causing another!
Yet despite thinking this, Du Fan already pulled the pale-faced Ringo toward one side of the stone door. There was no other place to hide—just a small gap beside the door, the only option left.
After a long while, Ringo finally managed to speak with difficulty, “Du Fan… what… what should we do?”
“What else can we do?” Du Fan glanced outside. “These angelic lords are about to fight—what can we do? When gods fight, mortals suffer… The only thing we can do now, Ringo, is pray that your gods will protect you… As for me… I’ll see if there’s any chance.”
Gannon looked up at the sky, a hint of anger flashing on his face. “Bastard… Spalitis, you weren’t my match even in the heavens. Do you really think you can stop me now? You should have died long ago!”
In an instant, he rushed at Spalitis.
Spalitis seemed to smile faintly, then waved his hand lightly. A streak of black light flashed, and before Du Fan could see what was happening, there was a loud boom—Gannon was sent flying.
Then Spalitis’s voice came through, “Lord Toronus, so that’s about as good as your skills are!”
Gannon got up from the ground, his face filled with rage. Suddenly, he roared loudly, and a white light flashed across his body. A pair of wing-like light wings appeared behind him. He glared at Spalitis, pressed his index fingers together as if holding an invisible long sword, and swung at Spalitis.
With a soft “whoosh,” the air seemed to split in two, and it seemed the invisible sword was about to cut Spalitis in half.
But then Spalitis sneered disdainfully before suddenly opening his mouth and roaring. An invisible sound wave emerged, acting like layers of shields, instantly blocking that invisible giant sword; both shattered into pieces almost at the same time. Spalitis leaped into the air and laughed, saying, “Lord Toronus, I never expected that after so many years apart, your skills haven’t improved much!” After saying that, Spalitis roared again, and this time a massive purple lightning bolt shot toward Gannon with a crackling sound. Caught off guard, Gannon was struck by the lightning and sent flying. Spalitis sneered once more, reached out in mid-air, and a several-zhang-long spear appeared in his hand. Pointing it at Gannon, he said coldly, “Lord Toronus, I think after being away from the heavens for so long, it’s time for you to return to the embrace of the gods!” As soon as he finished speaking, he threw the spear. Gannon’s figure in mid-air seemed about to be pierced, but at that moment, he suddenly roared, stopping mid-air. Then, with a swift motion, a huge battle axe appeared and smashed into the spear with a crackling sound. The spear, formed of light, instantly shattered into fragments! Seeing the small battle axe in Gannon’s hand, Spalitis showed a hint of unease on his face, “The Demon God Axe… You actually have the Demon God Axe?” Gannon’s face turned pale, no longer showing his usual calm demeanor. Glaring at Spalitis, he roared, “Spalitis, will you move or not?” As he spoke, the Demon God Axe in Gannon’s hand was already raised to his chest. Du Fan and Ringtone both shuddered as a fierce killing aura washed over them—so violent that it seemed capable of piercing through skin. Spalitis slowly spread his arms, his body radiating holy light, with silver flames appearing around him. Staring at Gannon, he said in a low voice, “Lord Toronus… Do you think you’re the Demon God? If it were the Demon God wielding the Demon God Axe, I might feel some fear. But it’s you? How could I possibly fear you? Lord Toronus, never forget— I have already received the blessings of the gods of the heavens, while you are merely an archangel under the Demon God!”
Toronus slowly raised the Demon God Axe in his hand. With a cold sneer, he said, “Very good. It seems you’re not planning to step aside. Well then… die!”
