Chapter 8: Sealing (Part 1)
Under Qi Wu Zhen’s guidance, the group had just broken free from the swarm of insects when Guo Shier suddenly turned around to face them. Drawn by the purple chains, he was flying upside down. Sihelin still held onto Guo Shier’s waist—she had gotten used to it. In fact, she didn’t need to hold on; the purple chains ensured she wouldn’t be thrown away. But holding him like this made her feel more at ease, so she turned as well and couldn’t help asking, “Shier, why did you turn around?”
Guo Shier ignored her and quickly cast a series of spells. A beam of light emerged from the mouth of the Soul Calming Cauldron, instantly binding the dozen or so Void Insects that were chasing them and pulling them above the cauldron. The insects struggled desperately in the light, but it seemed to have some magical power that held them firmly above the cauldron, compressing their bodies to the size of fists.
Li Ran was shocked and asked, “What are you doing?”
Guo Shier replied calmly, “I’m testing!”
Qi Wu Zhen, however, noticed something and asked, “You actually want to capture Void Insects?”
Guo Shier countered, “Why not? Since they’re made of souls, there’s a basis for capturing them. As long as we seal them carefully, I believe… even Void Insects can be obtained!”
Now, everyone’s attention was drawn to him. In fact, this technique wasn’t Guo Shier’s idea—it was a discovery by the old man. The old man would often fiddle around in the altar, improving his spellcraft over time. He had also received a great deal of inheritance and enough time to study it, while Guo Shier only studied last-minute when needed. Though the old man might not be strong, his knowledge and mastery of spells far surpassed Guo Shier’s, and in some aspects, even Li Ran and Qi Wu Zhen couldn’t compare.
With one spell cast, crimson-gold runes surged forth. A single spell contained thousands of runes—combined spells that instantly landed on one of the Void Insects. As the rune light flashed, the insect turned into a crimson-gold dot and vanished. A single spell had killed it.
Li Ran sighed, “All annihilated…”
Guo Shier wasn’t discouraged. Smiling, he said, “It’s fine. There’s a problem with this rune combination. I still have a few sealing spells—I’ll find a way.”
Several attempts were not very successful. In one of them, he had sealed a Void Worm in a rune, but before he could retrieve it, it suddenly exploded, and the Void Worm disappeared. Soon, all the dozen or so Void Worms on the cauldron’s rim were dead. Guo Shieru activated the Soul-Calming Cauldron, which instantly generated a beam of white light, capturing another dozen Void Worms.
Sericeline watched in astonishment, as did枯木 and Monier. They had encountered Void Worms before and knew how troublesome they were. Seeing Guo Shieru capture them so easily shocked them greatly—his strength was truly immense. Neither of the couple could discern Guo Shieru’s altar level, realizing that their former disciple had now reached a height they could never attain.
Guo Shieru failed a few more times. At that moment, the handsome old man provided the latest combination of runes for sealing. In fact, the handsome old man was even more nervous than Guo Shieru. He knew that if they could seal the Void Worms, they would possess a powerful weapon, as sealing wasn’t just about confinement—it was also a form of control. Once sealed successfully, it meant they could control the Void Worms. The thought alone was exciting; the Void Worms would undoubtedly be a formidable offensive weapon.
Finally, after casting a spell, one Void Worm stopped in its tracks, trapped in the white light. Thousands of crimson-gold runes quickly attached themselves and instantly condensed and shrank.
Guo Shieru waited for a moment before exclaiming happily, “It seems to have worked!”
Li Ran said, “Take it down and take a look!”
Guo Shieru reached out and grasped it, and the sealed Void Worm fell into his palm. Sericeline saw it at once and couldn’t help but exclaim, “Wow, it’s so beautiful…”
The sealed Void Worm was about the size of a fist, flat and oval in shape, with thin filaments extending from its edges. It resembled a crimson-red transparent gem, within which the form of the Void Worm appeared, sometimes blurred and sometimes clear, as if constantly changing. Holding it in his hand, a cold chill spread out. Guo Shieru examined it carefully and said, “It can probably be improved. Haha, it’s amazing!”
After the sealed Void Worm was passed around among everyone, Guo Shieru placed it back in his altar. The handsome old man couldn’t wait to study it and quickly offered suggestions for improvement. At that moment, Guo Shieru said, “I don’t plan to leave so soon. The Void Worms are the greatest treasure here! If I don’t collect enough of them, I won’t leave—it would be too costly!”
Li Ran said, “Give me the sealing technique!”
Qi Wu Zhen’s eyes lit up, and he said without hesitation, “Give me some too!”
Guo Shier said straightforwardly, “Everyone gets some!”
Wang Dayang asked, “I… do I get some too?”
Kumu and Monier didn’t even ask, knowing that Guo Shier would definitely give them some.
Guo Shier wasn’t stingy at all. One more person to deal with the Void Worms meant one more set of hands to help. There were many Void Worms here, and even more in the ruins. He alone couldn’t handle that many worms. If everyone participated, they could not only benefit but also eliminate the worms quickly. He nodded and said, “Everyone gets some!”
Seshilin, however, felt a bit disappointed because she was the only one who wasn’t a professional of the Spellcraft Clan. Even if Guo Shier passed on the knowledge to her, it would be useless. With her soul, she simply couldn’t withstand the impact of such advanced knowledge—she would instantly become an idiot, and might even lose her life.
Guo Shier gently touched each person’s forehead. At their current level of cultivation, mastering this spellcraft was extremely simple. In just a few moments, they fully grasped the spells. They exchanged glances, and Qi Wu Zhen said, “Alright, let’s fight our way back!” With that, he turned around and charged at the swarm of worms behind them.
This time, Guo Shier increased the defense of the Soul Calming Cauldron. Although it would consume a bit more spiritual energy, compared to the extreme ability of soul slaughter, this consumption was negligible—it might not even take hours to deplete one spiritual essence.
The Soul Calming Cauldron continuously emitted white light, drawing in the flying Void Worms and forcing them to be suppressed at its mouth. Then, everyone cast their spells to collect them. It now depended on each person’s skill and method—some collected more, while others collected less.
At first, the Soul Calming Cauldron gathered only a dozen Void Worms, but soon it was dozens, then hundreds. Qi Wu Zhen led the way from ahead. She was fierce—she rushed wherever there were more worms, gathering them together with a few slaps before the white light swept them into the mouth of the Cauldron. Everyone then frantically collected them, beaming with joy—except for Seshilin, who watched in utter frustration.
Suddenly, the handsome old man laughed heartily in the altar. Guo Shier was already used to his eccentric behavior. He was busy collecting the Void Worms and using the Soul Calming Cauldron’s defense to withstand their attacks, extremely busy. Then he heard the handsome old man shouting excitedly, “It worked! Haha, I’m a genius old man!” Immediately after, he passed on a piece of knowledge to Guo Shier.
Guo Shier immediately froze, took a closer look, and was overjoyed. He laughed and said, “Elder Shuai, you’re a genius… a genius elder, haha!” Originally, one set of spells could only deal with one Void Worm, but in such a short time, Elder Shuai had developed a spell to seal and capture ten Void Worms at once. Sealing ten Void Worms in an instant increased efficiency tenfold, which naturally excited Guo Shier greatly. This not only allowed them to catch more Void Worms but also meant that they no longer had to fear them. At this rate, it wouldn’t be long before all the Void Worms here were eliminated.
Soon after, everyone witnessed a stunning scene: Guo Shier cast a spell, and instead of just one sealed Void Worm, ten appeared. In just a few seconds, hundreds of Void Worms in the cauldron’s mouth vanished.
Li Ran was astonished, “You… you improved so quickly? How is that possible?”
Guo Shier laughed proudly, “Well? Impressive, right? Haha, hahaha!”
Once again, Guo Shier didn’t hold back and passed on the forbidden knowledge to everyone. At this point, they needed to work together—one person’s strength was far too weak. Only by putting in their best efforts could they succeed.
Soon, a large area of the swarm in the sky was cleared. Guo Shier did some quick calculations and found that he had already captured over three thousand Void Worms, with the others being similar. Wang Dayang had captured the fewest, while Li Ran had the most—this guy was truly powerful, and Guo Shier admitted he was not his match. Qi Wuzhen was also quite good, but since she had to keep flying with the group, she was slightly distracted, so she had only a slight advantage over Guo Shier.
These Void Worms were among the stronger ones in the swarm, though their numbers were relatively small—around tens of thousands. Guo Shier and his team captured more than half of them at once, leaving behind about thirty thousand more.
Of course, Guo Shier and his team wouldn’t stop there. Such an opportunity didn’t come around often, and the Void Worms were extremely dangerous. If not for their good luck, the Soul-Stabilizing Cauldron, and that incredible Elder Shuai, they wouldn’t have been able to deal with these worms and would have had to flee outside the ruins.
The battle to capture the worms lasted about an hour. The Void Worms kept charging forward one after another, only to be frozen by the Soul-Stabilizing Cauldron before being captured by the team. In the end, only a small number of worms remained, which finally scattered and fled into the distance.
The entire ground was uneven due to the Void Worms; all buildings in the gathering area were destroyed, with some ship fragments remaining on the surface. Since the Void Worms were targeting Li Ran’s team, many managed to escape. In the end, after the Void Worms fled in all directions, only a devastated land and a few lucky survivors from various races remained. Those who managed to avoid the Void Worms’ attacks were mostly the top experts of their respective races. They were filled with awe after witnessing how Li Ran’s team could defeat such monstrous creatures. The swarm successfully destroyed the gathering area, but most of the worms fell into Li Ran and his companions’ hands. They had no interest in pursuing the fleeing Void Worms; having figured out a way to capture them, they didn’t need to rush. Moreover, after days of rapid flight, everyone was exhausted. Guo Shier also wanted to talk with Mu Ni Er, so they had no mood to continue catching worms.
