Chapter 011: Magic Cannon
When he opened his eyes, Xiong Shili realized that his wrist was being held between the two fingers of the young man in front of him—his wrist trapped between the index and middle fingers of that young man.
Although it was only held by two fingers, to Xiong Shili, it felt as though he were squeezed tightly between two massive mountains. He tried hard to pull his wrist back, but no matter how much force he used, his wrist remained completely immobile in the grasp of the smiling young man.
Needless to say, this smiling young man was Du Fan.
Hearing that his brothers were struggling in their attack on the city, Du Fan quickly rushed out to help them. Knowing that Allen was rather impatient, Du Fan led a group of experts to Allen’s troops. Sure enough, Allen, frustrated by his failed attempts to capture the city, decided to lead an attack himself!
Just as Xiong Shili threw a powerful punch at Allen, Du Fan arrived just in time. Standing in front of Allen, Du Fan stretched out his hand slightly and firmly grabbed Xiong Shili with two fingers.
“Hmm. Quite some strength!” Du Fan said with a smile, feeling the force as Xiong Shili pulled back.
“Who are you?” Xiong Shili asked, his eyes narrowing at the opponent’s formidable strength.
“I’m the third son of the Green family,” Du Fan replied with a smile.
“Why are all the Green family members perverts?” Xiong Shili muttered.
Hearing this, Du Fan smiled inwardly. With a thought, he condensed his entire body’s Light Combat Qi and sent it shooting toward Xiong Shili’s wrist through his arm!
Instantly, Xiong Shili felt a tremendous force hitting his wrist. As the massive wave of Light Combat Qi struck his wrist, Du Fan confidently released his grip.
The moment he did, a rich yellow light flashed from Xiong Shili’s wrist—right at the spot where it was trapped. Taking advantage of Du Fan’s momentary distraction, Xiong Shili quickly flew backward.
After a few flights, he returned to Bear City.
“Hey, quite good defense!” Du Fan exclaimed in surprise, seeing that Xiong Shili had suffered no damage after withstanding his attack.
In Du Fan’s eyes, Xiong Shili possessed a cultivation level close to that of a saint. With such strength, Xiong Shili had completely withstood his attack without suffering any harm at all.
“Second brother, let’s pull back!” Seeing the soldiers of the Northern Legion dying continuously below the city walls, Du Fan frowned and said.
“Retreat!” Hearing Du Fan’s words, Allen raised his spear and shouted loudly.
At Allen’s command, the Northern Legion immediately sounded the retreat signal.
At that moment, Nai Xiu and Moses also descended from the sky.
Urged to save Allen, Du Fan handed the Green Shuttle to Nai Xiu to control, while he rushed ahead to block Xiong Shili’s attack before it could reach Allen.
After the troops retreated, a count was taken—just like before, the Northern Legion had lost nearly a thousand more soldiers!
“Bring ten buckets of water,” Du Fan said with a slight sigh upon seeing so many wounded.
War was truly a brutal affair! Thousands would die in just one battle!
Once ten buckets of clean water were brought, Du Fan poured two cups of Spring of Life into each bucket. Although these waters didn’t have the same miraculous effects as pure Spring of Life water, they were far superior to ordinary healing potions!
Those with severe injuries showed significant improvement after drinking one cup of this potion, while those with minor injuries mostly recovered immediately.
Seeing such remarkable effects, Allen eventually ordered that such potions be reserved only for those with serious injuries. Those with minor injuries could recover quickly with just a few days of rest or ordinary healing potions, so there was no need to waste such precious water.
Du Fan’s arrival quickly saved many severely injured soldiers’ lives and preserved many others’ careers as warriors!
If injuries couldn’t be treated effectively right away, they might lead to disability. According to the Northern Legion’s rules, disabled soldiers had to retire!
After this battle, Allen lost hundreds more of his elite troops.
Out of the 50,000-strong army, over 2,500 had already died!
Most of these fallen soldiers were killed by various defensive fortifications during the attack on Xiong City!
Faced with this situation, Du Fan resolved in his heart to find a good way to solve the problem of capturing cities.
Otherwise, the elite troops wouldn’t be wasted in battles with the enemy. Instead, during the siege, they would die from the enemy’s battering rams and rolling stones, or be scalded by falling hot oil. Such deaths are utterly worthless for a soldier.
“I’m so angry! It seemed like this siege was going well, but who would have thought that such a small kingdom’s capital would have a Saint-level expert!” Allen said angrily.
Originally, Allen planned to send troops to attack repeatedly, using various siege tactics to exhaust the defenders of Bear City, so he could then launch a final assault and capture it. But after paying a heavy price, just as he was ready to take Bear City, a Saint-level expert appeared there!
Not only that, but this Saint-level expert also had a Saint-class magical beast, and moreover, he could merge with his beast! After merging, aside from being unable to use domain skills, his combat power was comparable to that of domain experts!
Thinking of this, Allen was furious! If Bear City had shown such strength from the start, Allen wouldn’t have chosen this tactic! Without it, his soldiers wouldn’t have suffered such heavy losses!
“Second brother, what’s our plan?” Du Fan quickly asked, seeing Allen’s furious expression.
“Since you all have arrived, let’s attack all at once! I can’t do it, but you three domain experts should be able to handle that Bear Shili!” Allen said angrily upon hearing Du Fan’s question.
This time, Du Fan came to help Allen with only Nai Xiu and Moses; the other experts were left in the Northern Army’s camp, ready to respond to Duke Green’s orders at any time.
“I think as long as we break through that city wall, everything will be fine. Let’s first find a way to break through the wall, then send our soldiers in,” Du Fan said.
Obviously, before breaking through the wall, ordinary soldiers, even if they followed, would mostly serve as cannon fodder and die in vain.
“Good! Since you’re so confident, Third Brother, let’s rest for a day and start the siege tomorrow!”
“Okay, you rest. I’ll go check out Bear City!” Du Fan said with a smile.
“In that case, be careful!” Allen nodded at his younger brother after hearing Du Fan’s words.
“Don’t worry, second brother. As for you, rest well. You’ve been tired all day too—get some rest, regain your strength, and we’ll continue fighting tomorrow!” Du Fan said with a smile.
Allen nodded. Originally, he wanted to continue the siege! After all, there was still a division of ten thousand soldiers yet to be deployed, and with the Northern Legion’s strength, they could handle more intense battles!
But after Du Fan’s persuasion, Allen agreed to rest for a day before launching a full-scale attack the next day.
“Du Fan, I want to go with you,” Nayiuxiu said quickly as she saw him about to leave.
“Yes, third brother. I’m not at ease if you go alone,” Moses added promptly.
“No. You two clearly belong to the elf race. If we take you in, we’ll quickly attract attention,” Du Fan said hurriedly when he saw them wanting to follow.
“We can wear robes like Lord Buzhe,” Nayiuxiu suggested.
“Wearing robes in broad daylight will only draw more attention!” Du Fan replied.
“Haha, I’m not going to do anything bad. Don’t worry,” Du Fan said with a smile.
“Alright, then be careful.” It was hard for Nayiuxiu not to worry about Du Fan going alone into enemy territory.
Smiling at Nayiuxiu and Moses, Du Fan soared into the sky.
Given Du Fan’s speed and agility, it was impossible for anyone in Bear City to suddenly notice someone entering from outside.
Walking through Bear City, Du Fan found that there were even more wounded soldiers!
Although Allen’s several attempts at siege had failed, the Northern Legion soldiers who managed to climb the city walls were a nightmare for the soldiers of the Bear Kingdom!
Even facing attacks from ten enemies at once, a Northern Legion soldier could fight calmly until the last moment! Such spirit! Such combat strength! A single Northern Legion soldier on the city walls could claim the lives of many soldiers from the Bear Kingdom!
Moreover, before the initial attack, the Northern Legion used things like crossbows, trebuchets, and magical attacks by their mages, causing significant damage to Bear City’s defenders!
Once inside Bear City, Du Fan realized just how hard it must have been for the soldiers of the Bear Kingdom to hold out until now!
Out of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, based on Du Fan’s observations along the way, nearly half had been killed or wounded!
In other words, despite having the advantage of defending a city, facing the fierce attacking power of the Northern Legion, the casualty rate among the troops in Bear City was already several times that of the Northern Legion! Only by seeing the situation before him did Du Fan realize just how formidable the combat strength of the Northern Legion was! Walking through Bear City, Du Fan began to pay attention to its military defense system. In his eyes, apart from the high and sturdy city walls, the military defense system of Bear City had little else to offer. The Union of the Eighteen Northern Kingdoms had a fierce folk culture, and this ferocity led to a warrior ethos. As a result, among the countries in the Frozen Alliance, not much effort was put into military defense—unlike some countries whose royal cities were equipped with massive magic towers! If Bear City had such magic towers, the outcome of this battle would likely be different. The destructive power of those magic towers meant that a single attack, if it hit the center of a crowd, could result in hundreds of casualties! However, the cost of building a magic tower exceeded millions of gold coins, and the magic crystals required for its operation were an endless expense! Thus, the lack of financial resources was also a major reason why no magic towers were installed in Bear City.
