Chapter 005: Reunion
Du Fan carefully observed the expressions of his two elder brothers. Logically, in a noble family like theirs, fratricide over inheritance issues was not uncommon. Fortunately, Duke Green was still alive, so no one dared think such things. Moreover, it had long been decided within the family that the heir would definitely be their gentle eldest brother. As for the second brother, though cold and irritable, he would make a great warrior and a fine general, but certainly not a competent politician—only the eldest brother had the skill to manipulate politics with cunning words.
As for himself, he had always been known as a worthless person, with the chance of becoming an heir as distant as his distance from the pope. No matter how he thought about it, it seemed impossible.
Though he didn’t know what luck had struck him this year, turning a worthless person into a genius, the only emotion he could read on his brothers’ faces was joy, nothing else.
Du Fan dismissed his last worries. With a low smile, he said, “Brothers, let’s not talk about other matters for now… I’m sure you’ve already heard about the interesting events happening in Modo City. I’ve been waiting for you to arrive. Now that you’re here, perhaps the three of us can put on a splendid drama?”
George and Allen exchanged a glance and asked in low voices, “What do you mean?”
“Nothing much. Just a fun game… If someone wants my life, I must take theirs, right? Otherwise, how can I live up to myself or the Green family?”
George sighed softly, patted Du Fan on the shoulder, and said, “Third brother, it’s been a year—you’ve really changed a lot!”
Du Fan chuckled lightly and replied, “Elder brother, it’s not that I change quickly, but that I have no choice! I have to do this, otherwise, I’ll never be able to escape this northern sky!”
Allen snorted and said, “Are they even worthy of it?”
Du Fan suddenly glanced at Joshua, who was smiling not far away, and said in a low voice, “Never mind. Let’s talk about these things later. Let’s go into the city first… By the way, second brother, did you bring those people from Regan City for me?”
“Of course,” Allen nodded, a sly expression appearing on his face. “But our third brother has really grown up!”
Du Fan smiled faintly, saying little, and merely remarked, “Elder brother and second elder brother, let’s enter the city… After resting well today, starting tomorrow, you’ll have a lot to do…” With that, Du Fan turned to Yu Zhen and bowed slightly, saying, “Lord Joshua, please go ahead…”
“Please go ahead…”
…
On that pale moonlit night, even the holiest sanctuaries seemed to carry a faint, eerie atmosphere.
A graceful figure strolled through the garden behind the sanctuary, her expression half-smiling, as if she had encountered something very interesting.
“Dear master…” a miniature dragon flying beside her whispered, “I don’t understand why your master’s master doesn’t come to see you directly. Instead, he keeps talking nonsense with those strangers from who knows where. You’ve done so much for him—doesn’t that deserve at least a quick visit from him?”
The figure turned slightly. Under the moonlight, she was breathtakingly beautiful. Tilting her head, she smiled faintly and said softly, “Isella, as a Dragon of Dreams, can you even understand human emotions?”
Isella, full of emotion, replied loudly, “Of course! I am the legendary Dragon God. In the most glorious era of Isella, every humble human prayed in my temple—filled with confusion, anger, sorrow… Human emotions are like the sandstorms in the desert: unpredictable and mysterious. They might pray today for their loved ones to always love them, and curse them to die sooner the next day. These strange emotions are more complex than any martial skill, yet stronger than any magic…”
Chenchen smiled faintly and said, “Alright, I understand now… So Isella, tell me—what kind of feelings does he have for that barbarian girl?”
Isella transformed, becoming the Wise Isella. She slowly landed on the ground, one claw resting under her chin in a classic thinking pose, and said slowly, “Emotions between men and women are inherently complex, let alone those of your master’s master. In my opinion, his heart is filled with contradictions. He seems to deeply love that barbarian woman, but he can’t bring himself to speak up. That’s what it means to love but struggle to express it!”
Isella, the Sage of Love, sighed as if witnessing some tragic love story. She grinned, her expression oddly peculiar.
A colder hint appeared in Chenchen’s smile. Yet even so, she remained a breathtakingly beautiful woman. She let out a soft sigh and asked, “How did you figure it out?”
Ethela, the Love Saint, smiled ambiguously and said, “Does it really need to be seen? When I went to save him, the master’s master was holding that barbarian woman tightly, refusing to let go. Now that I think about it, it truly makes one wonder what love is in this world—something that can drive people to life and death…”
“Bang—”
Before Ethela could finish speaking, her body crashed to the ground like a meteor. The force of the impact was so great that she felt dizzy and disoriented before slowly getting up. Not daring to complain, she quickly flew in front of Chenchen and knelt down, whispering, “Honorable and great master! I wonder what I’ve done this time to anger you?”
Chenchen smiled softly and said, “You haven’t done anything to anger me. I just happened to be in a bad mood… I took my anger out on you accidentally. I’m so sorry!”
Ethela bowed deeply, acting like a loyal dog, almost to the point of sticking out her tongue. “It’s my fortune that the master chooses to take her anger out on me!”
“Is that so? Then enjoy your ‘fortune’ here. I’m going back!” Chenchen said coldly, her figure already disappearing from that spot.
Ethela was stunned for a moment before suddenly jumping up and shouting, “I get it! I understand! I’ve figured it out!”
With that, she hurried off toward the sanctuary.
But halfway there, Ethela suddenly felt weak all over, and her body fell to the ground. Just as she tried to scream, someone grabbed her dragon horns and slowly lifted her up!
Furious, Ethela thought, Who is this? Who dares to attack me, the sacred Ethela! I must make them pay!
In her rage, Ethela forgot that though she was weak, she still had level eight strength. If someone could approach her silently, what kind of strength must this person possess!
Ethela angrily raised her head, even forgetting to change her form. But when she saw the person holding her dragon horns, the anger on her face turned into a sycophantic smile. She forced out a gritted-teeth smile and said, “The master’s master…”
Du Fan reached out to touch Isella’s head, his fingers sliding between the thin scales as if ready to pull them out at any moment. Seeing Isella’s expression, Du Fan suddenly smiled gently and said, “Isella, tell me—what have you learned? What do you understand now? And what have you figured out?”
Isella’s expression changed suddenly. “I… I don’t know anything!”
Du Fan hummed in response, gently raising his right hand, upon which a few small magic balls appeared.
Gritting her teeth, Isella wondered in her mind which was more terrifying—the master or the master’s master. In an instant, she made a comparison. Her dragon-like keen senses told her that offending the master’s master would at most result in some physical pain, but if she offended the master, her very existence could be completely erased!
For once, a determined look appeared on Isella’s face. She suddenly closed her eyes and said, “Go ahead!”
A dragon, though a mini dragon, still made people can’t help but laugh when it showed such an expression. Du Fan had already figured out what she understood from her expression. He smiled softly and said, “Alright, Isella. I won’t press you further. But it seems we still have countless accounts to settle, right?”
Isella opened her eyes, looking confused.
Du Fan smiled and said, “For example, you suddenly left me outside the city and ran away by yourself. Isella, given your understanding of me, do you think I wouldn’t retaliate for that?”
Isella almost jumped up. “This… this was… it was the master’s order!”
“Very good. It was the master’s order. Then who am I?”
“You are the master’s master!”
“Then you disobeyed the master’s master’s order for the master’s order. Do you think you were right?”
Isella’s head started to heat up. She felt like Du Fan was confusing her. Her brain burned with confusion, and finally she said, “I… I was wrong…”
