Chapter 21: Zhuge Ling’er
The turbulent night finally passed. When Ye Feng got up from bed the next morning, still groggy, he heard chatter in the dormitory.
“Xiao Ye, what the hell happened last night? You went back to the dorm by yourself without telling us. It was the boss who came back to check and found you there before calling us over. We thought it was just a prank! But this morning, several corpses were found in the school parking lot, and another body was in a pile of junk near the complex building. All of them were shot—so scary. The police are investigating now!” Dormitory member Six leaned in with his big face, lowering his voice and asking, “Did Long Ge’s guys do this?”
Ye Feng ignored Six’s question, though he felt nervous. If the investigation turned to him, how should he handle it? In such a situation, the unpleasant events of the previous night were forgotten. Ye Feng knew that no matter how much Long Ge misunderstood him, he couldn’t change that. He could only let time prove he had no ill intentions.
“Hey, tell us! We promise not to spread it,” Six insisted.
“You don’t need to know such things!” Ye Feng pushed away Six’s big face.
There was a knock at the open door. She looked to be in her early twenties. Though wearing a police uniform, it couldn’t hide her beauty; instead, it added to her grace.
“Who are you looking for?” Dormitory member Six acted overly friendly.
“Excuse me, is Ye Feng in this dorm?” The female police officer’s gaze fell on Ye Feng. She clearly recognized him but still asked.
“That’s me. What do you want?” Ye Feng nodded slightly at her.
“Could you spare us some time now?” The officer seemed shy.
“No problem. Find a place,” Ye Feng agreed readily.
The other guys in the dorm raised their middle fingers at him.
“Damn, being handsome really makes a difference. I’m going to South Korea for plastic surgery!” Six muttered after Ye Feng was out of sight.
The female officer took Ye Feng to a study room. To his surprise, there were many police officers standing at the door.
“You don’t need to be surprised. We’ve borrowed this room as an interrogation room,” the officer said, guessing his confusion from his expression.
“I’m sure you already know about the shooting that happened at your school, right?” After asking Ye Feng to sit down, the female police officer got straight to the point, completely devoid of the shyness from before and appearing quite efficient.
“I heard about it when I got up this morning!” Ye Feng nodded.
“Did you know about it last night or this morning?” The police officer’s question was a bit tricky.
“I just found out this morning, from the sixth guy in the dormitory!” Ye Feng pretended to be puzzled. “Why do you ask?”
“Where were you last night?” the police officer pressed further.
“In the dormitory!” Ye Feng replied without any hint of hesitation.
“Were you there the whole time? Didn’t you go out at all?” The police officer’s tone clearly showed doubt.
“Let me think… I went to the bathroom three times, I think. Maybe two times. I can’t remember exactly.” Ye Feng looked up at the ceiling, seemingly trying to recall. “Is there a problem?”
After not getting the answers she wanted from this series of questions, the beautiful police officer stared at Ye Feng for a long time, while Ye Feng simply looked at her indifferently.
Finally, it was the female police officer who spoke first. “Do you know Long Ge?”
“I do!” Ye Feng didn’t deny it.
The police officer glanced at him in surprise and wrote something down in her notebook.
“Are you close to him?” she asked tentatively.
“Sort of friends. He’s a gang leader, and I’m just a student. We don’t have much in common. We just met by chance and had a few meals together.” Ye Feng spoke casually.
“But according to the information we have, he seems to take quite good care of you!” The police officer wore a strange smile.
“Maybe. Probably because we get along well.” Ye Feng shook his head with a wry smile.
“What do you think of Long Ge?” The police officer stopped writing and adopted a somewhat childish demeanor.
“He’s… very generous. He’s bold in what he does, dares to say anything, dares to do anything. I envy his personality…” Although he was puzzled why the police officer asked such questions, Ye Feng still gave his answer.
“That’s a pretty high-> evaluation is translated as: evaluation., I guess…” The police officer nodded seriously. “Do you think he could have done this?”
“I’m not sure.” Ye Feng shook his head and smiled.
“What topics do you usually talk about with him?” The police officer continued asking these strange questions.
“We just chat casually when we’re together… talking about all sorts of things…” Ye Feng said with a smile.
“Did he never tell you anything about the underworld?” The female police officer picked up her gel pen again, ready to take notes.
“No, he would never talk to me about such things,” Ye Feng shook his head.
“We’ve checked your call records. Someone called you before 8 o’clock. The number belonged to Tie Zhe. What did he say to you?” The police officer’s questions became increasingly tricky.
“Nothing much, just ordinary small talk. Uncle Tie has always cared about me. We occasionally keep in touch.” The police officer still couldn’t detect any abnormality on Ye Feng’s face.
“Did he not mention anything special? Like any special operations or anything he told you?” The police officer continued to press him.
“No, just ordinary small talk, as usual. Nothing special,” Ye Feng shook his head.
“Do you know who all died this time?” The police officer’s question was utterly baffling. Even Ye Feng, who was the real culprit in this case, wasn’t very clear about this, yet she still asked.
“I’m not sure. I only heard there were a few in the parking lot and one in the junk pile. How many in total died?” Ye Feng countered, wanting to know if the bodies in the park near the school had been found.
“Five died. Four of them were unwell-known hooligans. The one in the junk pile was Man Niu, a key subordinate of Niu Xing. He was somewhat famous in the underworld. They say he knew martial arts, but he was still killed,” the police officer glanced toward the door and then lowered her voice.
“What’s the use of knowing martial arts? It’s the age of firearms! No matter how high you jump, a bullet will still do the trick,” Ye Feng said dismissively, though he had already seen Man Niu’s martial arts skills.
“Tch, you’ve never seen real martial arts. You’ll know when you do!” The police officer glared at Ye Feng. “Well, I’ve finished my questions. You can go back to your dormitory!”
“Police officer, may I ask your name?” Ye Feng couldn’t resist teasing her before leaving.
“My name is Zhuge Ling’er. Remember that. If anyone bullies you in the future, come to the criminal police team and find me!” The police officer waved her little fist at Ye Feng. “I’ll help you beat them up then!”
“Sure, let’s beat them up together then!” Ye Feng raised his eyebrows before turning to leave.
