Chapter 28: Strayed into the Wolf’s Den, Disaster at the End of the Melody
Stars may be faint, yet they endure forever; flames may be brief, yet they burn fiercely. Love has conditions and can be explained, but obsession is utterly insane. (Gu Long)
……
Liu Yi shook his head violently, came back to his senses, and said awkwardly, “Ji, Miss Mo, is there any left on your face?”
Jili also shook her head sharply and smiled, “No, none left.”
To avoid further embarrassment, Jili shouted at Liu Yi, “Stretch your legs out.”
Liu Yi instinctively stretched his legs, not knowing what this crazy girl had in mind.
Jili yawned and said, “I’m so tired. I’ll borrow your legs.” Then, she actually lay down on Liu Yi’s legs, tore off a wolf leg, and began eating it heartily.
Liu Yi smiled helplessly and thought to himself, “Such innocence from this little girl… What was that look just now? Where have I seen it before? Liu Yi admitted he had seen many beauties, but that look seemed unrecognizable in any of them…” Unable to find an answer, he stopped thinking and started eating the delicious roasted meat, as his hunger was too great to allow him to dwell on random thoughts.
Jili was also eating, but now her face was turned away, with a few strands of black hair from her headdress gently resting on Liu Yi’s legs. Beneath her calm appearance, Jili’s heart was agitated. That look had unsettled her, filled her with fear. Yet beneath it all, she felt a hint of happiness and unconsciously murmured, “Could it be that there truly is lifelong happiness atop Moon Warehouse Mountain?”
As if hearing what Jili said, Liu Yi asked while eating, “What’s wrong? What did you say?”
Jili replied, “Nothing, I didn’t say anything.”
When does time pass the fastest? In moments of happiness.
Patting her stomach, Jili sat up, stretched her back, and said, “Delicious. It feels so good to be full.”
By now, Liu Yi had also eaten most of the wolf leg; the rest was too much for him to handle. He took out oil paper to wrap up the remaining meat and patted his stomach as well, saying, “Mm, not bad. Eating meat is indeed better than eating dry rations.”
Suddenly, Jili rushed behind Liu Yi, hugged him tightly, and leaned her head close to his ear, saying, “It’s comfortable to be full, but… I think we’re in trouble now.”
At the same time as Jili’s action, Liu Yi also sensed something was wrong—a very uncomfortable aura surrounded him tightly. Looking around, he saw thousands of green eyes.
What was that? A pack of wolves, stretching as far as the eye could see. Looking further around, it was clear the wolves had encircled the two of them completely, forming an endless circle.
So many—describing them as thousands was no exaggeration. Even those with excellent light-speed movement skills would have no chance of escaping this encirclement, as it was simply too large. Of course, those with advanced flying techniques could make it, but Liu Yi didn’t know how. So, there was probably no chance of escape.
Liu Yi thought further, “If I used the Jade Flower Finger to kill them all? It’s probably impossible. Even if I strain my fingers to the point of cramps, I still can’t kill them all.”
The wolf pack’s encirclement gradually narrowed. Liu Yi could now see the wolves in front—their white teeth glistening with saliva, their green eyes seeming to fix on a delicious meal.
Gilly’s small body trembled as she said, “Did we eat their leader? Now they’re coming for revenge.”
Liu Yi gently stroked Gilly’s head to ease her fear. “Since we’ve already eaten them, what more do we want? Now think about how to save our lives.”
Gilly seemed even more terrified and exclaimed, “I haven’t even met my beloved yet! I don’t want to be eaten by wolves like this!”
Liu Yi watched the shrinking circle of wolves, thinking of a solution while comforting Gilly. “What, little girl? Missing your sweetheart?”
Gilly leaned against Liu Yi’s shoulder. A strand of her black hair brushed against his face, making him itch, but it felt pleasant.
Gilly said urgently, “I’m still looking! At least let me die after finding my beloved. Dying like this is too worthless. There are so many things I haven’t tried yet! I refuse, I refuse!” As they leaned together, Liu Yi could clearly feel Gilly trembling—out of fear, out of terror. Facing such brutal wolves, on the brink of death, who wouldn’t be afraid?
Death wasn’t scary; what was scary was the process of dying.
The wolves closed in little by little, narrowing their encirclement. That was the process, and Gilly’s fear grew stronger—that was what was terrifying.
The lead wolf was less than ten meters away from Liu Yi and Gilly. Clearly, in a few more steps, they would pounce and tear them to pieces.
Gilly hugged Liu Yi even tighter. Perhaps from nervousness, she asked, “Will… will we die here?”
Liu Yi remained silent. If it were just a few dozen wolves, it might be manageable, but the problem now was that there were countless wolves. Even if they didn’t move and just stood there letting them attack, exhaustion would kill them.
Liu Yi cursed angrily, “Damn it! Why does the Wolf King have so many brothers?”
The wolf pack continued to narrow its encirclement, moving slowly. Liu Yi had no choice but to retreat slowly, leading Gilly toward the stone wall behind them. At least that would reduce attacks from one side.
Suddenly, with a “snap,” Gilly’s flute fell to the ground. Liu Yi glanced down, his eyes lighting up. There it was—now they had to try desperately; otherwise, there would be no hope left.
Liu Yi slowly crouched down, picked up the flute, and sat down. He didn’t dare move quickly, fearing it might anger the wolves and prompt them to attack sooner.
Gilly didn’t know what Liu Yi was planning, but seeing him sit down, she sat beside him as well, leaning against his shoulder…
The wind blew gently, the clouds drifted, the moon was full. On the mountain top, the scene was cruel—thousands of hungry wolves surrounded a man and a woman. In no time, they would be torn to shreds, left with no bones left.
Suddenly, a melodious, ethereal flute sound came from among the wolves. The night was no longer lonely, the moon no longer alone.
The sound seemed to come from the sky, yet also as if from another world, telling of the beauty of life. Sometimes it was low, like a quiet spring in a valley, serene and peaceful, without a trace of conflict. Other times it was high, like the sound of mountains and flowing water, full of vitality, expressing the exuberance of youth. The wolf pack stopped moving, and all those green eyes gradually disappeared. They closed their eyes, and the wolves slowly lay down on the ground, as if sleeping or listening to this wonderful melody.
The sound of the flute changed, from fast to slow, with the wind flowing gently through the fingers. A new scene appeared in my mind: sunlight shining over the earth, the spring breeze carrying the scent of flowers, birds singing of the beginning of life. The withered grass gradually turned green—a sign of hope for life, an expression of admiration for spring. The air was warm, leaving no trace of cold; it warmed the body and the heart. It was a feeling of emotion, an emotion for life, an emotion expressed by all things in celebration of spring…
Time passed unnoticed. The flute music stopped, but that wonderful melody seemed to linger in the stars, unable to dissipate for a long time…
Liu Yi put down the flute and glanced at the wolf pack, still with their eyes closed, lying on the ground…
Gillier, who was leaning on his shoulder, was crying bitterly—because of the music. Gillier was already a sensitive girl with rich expressions. Hearing Liu Yi’s flute music, she could no longer hold back her emotions.
