Chapter 007: The Mysterious Assassin

Although it was already late spring and early summer, the nights in the southern regions remained somewhat cold. Within Odin Castle, an aura of menace permeated every corner, intensifying this sense of chill.

Du Fan stood on a attic in the back courtyard of the mansion, holding a cup of warm wine but unable to swallow it for a long time. Instinctively, he knew that his first night in Odin Castle would not pass so easily.

He stood there for an unknown duration. By then, the waning moon in the night sky was already high, yet there was still no sign of movement around the mansion. Frustrated, Du Fan finally threw the wine cup aside, hearing a “ding” in the darkness. Then he clapped his hands and walked back into the room.

But as soon as he entered the room, a gust of night wind blew in, causing Du Fan to feel an intense chill that pierced to the bone! A fierce killing intent came from outside the room! It was so tangible that it made his entire body ache.

Panicked, Du Fan quickly grabbed the Frostfall Sword at his waist and slowly turned around to look behind him. The night sky, once clear with the bright moon, was now covered in clouds, blocking out both moonlight and starlight. It was so dark that almost nothing could be seen. However, the faint lights in the distance from Odin Castle allowed Du Fan to barely make out a tall figure standing on the attic’s terrace. Behind him seemed to be a cloak fluttering in the wind, along with long, flowing hair.

The figure stood on the terrace railing, arms seemingly crossed over his chest, with what appeared to be a sword in his arms. Du Fan immediately sensed an astonishing killing intent emanating from him!

He was shocked. Around this attic, there were at least a dozen experts from the Divine Might Prison in ambush. Yet this man had managed to arrive here unnoticed, proving his extraordinary skill. Moreover, his killing intent was so intense that even Du Fan couldn’t match it. Clearly, this opponent’s strength was immense!

“Who are you?” Du Fan frowned and demanded in a low voice.

The other person seemed to smile, but didn’t say much. Instead, they suddenly lifted their long hair to reveal the face beneath! Although it was pitch black around them, Du Fan’s abilities allowed him to use his sharp eyesight to see the other person clearly. Yet upon looking, he noticed something strange about their face. Even when he used his Eagle Eye magic, he couldn’t see clearly at first.
“Are you here to kill me?” Seeing that the other person didn’t respond, Du Fan smiled again and asked softly.
But the other person still remained silent, only emitting a cold laugh.
Suddenly, Du Fan felt an extremely fierce killing intent appearing right behind him. Instinctively, he dodged, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw a sword strike “whoosh” past where he had been standing—such speed was truly astonishing.
Du Fan wanted to say something, but the same killing intent appeared again. This time, he didn’t dodge but instead drew Frostfall Snow from his waist and stepped back.
A “ding” sound was heard, and sparks scattered in the darkness. A tremendous force came from Frostfall Snow. Du Fan couldn’t help but take a step forward, already leaving the room and onto the terrace.
He was filled with confusion, unsure how the other person had discovered him under such strange circumstances. Immediately, he pushed off with his toes and arrived in front of the other person. But at that moment, Du Fan realized that the figure standing on the terrace railing just now suddenly became blurred.
Du Fan was slightly stunned, but quickly recovered. With a cold laugh, he said indifferently, “Illusion magic? It seems you’re from the Laney Empire! Then are you with Gaffield or Leoport?”
A chilling voice suddenly came from behind Du Fan. It seemed to carry a hint of coquetry, yet was also extremely strange: “What? Is that all your strength, someone who could kill Quested?”
Before the voice faded, there was a “hiss”…

But this time, Du Fan reacted quickly. He casually cast a floating spell, making his body several times lighter. Instantly, he slid aside like a drifting cloud. Yet even so, he clearly saw a blade of ice-cold sword energy pass right by his waist. Du Fan had no doubt about what would happen if that sword energy hit him.

Yet this extremely cold combat energy suddenly sparked an idea in Du Fan’s mind. His eyes narrowed as he sneered, “So it’s the legendary Frost Combat Energy!”

With that, Du Fan stopped being polite. He flicked Frost Snow from his hand, and a bright sword energy shot backward. With a “boom,” the door behind him was reduced to wood shavings—yet somehow, his mysterious opponent had already dodged his attack!

What incredible speed!

Although Du Fan’s combat energy was focused on the wind attribute for speed, he naturally couldn’t reach such speeds right away. But the opponent was using Frost Combat Energy of the water attribute—so how…?

Could it be that he also mastered dual attributes!?

Du Fan was secretly shocked. He never expected to encounter such a skilled opponent in a place like this. But under these circumstances, he had no time to ponder so many questions. Instinctively, he sensed that the opponent was still around. Suddenly, he twisted his body strangely, and Frost Snow in his hand traced a circular arc as it shot out in all directions!

A cold sneer came from where the opponent had stood before. Du Fan’s attack missed again, but the sharp sword energy left a deep crack in the attic wall!

Yet after this attack, Du Fan became somewhat calmer. He slowly lowered Frost Snow before turning to look at the person who stood on the balcony once more.

This time, the person wasn’t holding his sword with both hands. His long sword had somehow been drawn and hung there, pointing diagonally at the ground. A thin layer of ice seemed to cover its blade.

Seeing this, Du Fan felt something stir in his heart. He suddenly said loudly, “You don’t even dare fight me head-on—just dodging around. Is this your strength?”

Hearing Du Fan’s words, the opponent seemed to smile coldly and said, “I…”

But as soon as he said those words, Du Fan’s figure suddenly moved with lightning speed, vanishing like a ghost!
This time, Du Fan must have used all his strength—within the blink of an eye, he was already in front of his opponent. The combat energy on his Frostfall Sword burned fiercely as he swung it down at full force!
The opponent seemed unprepared for Du Fan’s speed. Before his sword could even be raised halfway, Du Fan’s long sword had already sliced down through his head, sinking deep inside.
With a muffled “thud,” Du Fan instinctively sensed something was wrong.
His sword had pierced through the body, but there was no sense of resistance at all. It seemed effortless—his opponent was instantly split in two and then slowly disappeared like smoke.
“Hmph! Another illusion magic!” Du Fan sneered, quickly realizing, “It seems you don’t rely on external forces to cast this magic—instead, you’re skilled in both magic and martial arts?”
A cold laugh came from behind him. “You only realize that now? Isn’t it a bit late?”
“It is a bit late,” Du Fan replied with a faint smile. “But do you know? You’re not the only one skilled in both magic and martial arts! I am too!”
Before he could finish speaking, Du Fan spun around abruptly and saw several star-like cracks rushing toward his opponent. Not daring to delay, he used the Meteor Shower technique, blocking all escape routes—aiming to kill his opponent in one strike.
Yet, a water-blue combat energy suddenly appeared in midair. The intense Meteor Shower struck it, but only ripples spread out, with no effect at all.
Du Fan couldn’t help but frown. Since he started his journey, he had never encountered such a stubborn enemy—it seemed none of his moves worked. This feeling surprised him, yet also gave him a strange sense.
It wasn’t fear, but rather the feeling that even if he used every trick in his arsenal, he might not be able to defeat this opponent!
This uncertainty only heightened his anticipation.
Gradually, the magic and combat energy above them dissipated into the air. The clouds in the night sky cleared slightly, and moonlight shone down. Finally, Du Fan could see his mysterious opponent clearly…
