Chapter 005: God Says
What surprised Du Fan the most was the villagers’ attitude toward the old man—it wasn’t that of treating a clan leader, but rather as if they were addressing their faith, or perhaps… a god!
Du Fan was shocked by his own thought. How could seeing the old man feel like seeing a god? Yet there was something different about the old man’s aura. It didn’t inspire a sense of kneeling in worship, but rather an involuntary sense of respect.
Influenced by the old man, Du Fan also subconsciously lowered his head. The old man’s eyes sparkled, and his smile became even kinder. “Lord, please come inside and rest for a while.”
Du Fan knew he could and should refuse, but he replied, “Okay.”
After agreeing, Du Fan’s expression changed. It reminded him of something—his own Speech Magic! But then he realized it wasn’t quite the same. He had experienced the Speech Magic cast on him by Gan Nong and knew that feeling. Now, however, it was as if he was obeying the old man out of pure heart.
“What’s wrong, Du Fan?”
“Nothing.” Du Fan hurried after him but suddenly stopped!
How did he know his name was Du Fan?!
Looking at the old man’s kind smile, Du Fan truly felt as if he were seeing a god.
After hesitating for a moment, Du Fan asked, “Are you a Saint?”
Unaware of it, Du Fan had already started using honorifics. But before the old man could answer, he dismissed that idea and asked doubtfully, “A Domain master?”
Then Du Fan shook his head again. Gan Fu was indeed a Domain master, but he hadn’t managed to evoke such a feeling in Du Fan.
“Could it be a god!” Du Fan exclaimed. Only that explanation could account for his current feelings, though he had always refused to admit it.
“A god?” The old man glanced at Du Fan, then looked up at the sky and shook his head sadly. “I’m not yet one.”
By saying he wasn’t yet one, it meant he might become—a god!
Du Fan thought of Old Mark and the others. He said to Old Mark, “Grandpa Mark, you guys rest. There’s no need to worry about me. They won’t bother us again.”
Du Fan didn’t believe the old man didn’t know about those people who had robbed them. The old man even knew who he was and seemed to have predicted that he would come here!
Details reveal everything. In such a place, an old man with pure white skin, whose long white robe slightly trailed on the ground, yet his robe wasn’t stained with a single speck of dust—doesn’t that speak volumes? From Du Fan’s observation, the old man didn’t stir even the slightest dust as he walked! Not even Du Fan himself could do that!
“You observe very carefully,” the old man said, keeping an eye on Du Fan as he walked inside. He also sensed that Du Fan had noticed his feet. “There are 367 households from here to the end of the valley, making a total of 972 people in the village. I’ve lived with them for hundreds of years, but I moved here just a year ago.”
The old man didn’t hesitate to tell Du Fan that he had lived here for hundreds of years. Hearing this, Du Fan slightly tilted his head—was the old man really that old?
“Hmm…” Du Fan pondered for a while. He did seem like an ancient being who had lived for centuries. If one reached the Sacred Rank, their lifespan would extend.
The old man led Du Fan into a small hut.
The hut was filled with countless items. Though it appeared to be just over twenty square meters from the outside, stepping inside gave the first impression of smallness—extremely small! But then the feeling changed—the hut was huge! Way bigger than twenty square meters!
The initial sense of smallness came from the piles of items blocking Du Fan’s view, along with the dim lighting, which made it hard to see clearly. Once he could see better, even by estimation, it was clear that this space, which could be called a warehouse, was far more than twenty square meters!
A magical space!
That was the only explanation Du Fan could think of.
The old man didn’t want to explain the situation inside the hut; Du Fan could guess some things on his own. He casually pushed the items on the table aside and found a dusty chair. It was hard to imagine how such a white-haired old man could keep himself clean in such an environment.
Yet the truth was, Du Fan’s clothes, already covered in dust, gained more dust before he could change them, standing in sharp contrast to the old man’s spotless white robe. Du Fan noticed that when dust approached the old man, even at a distance of just a millimeter, it was pushed aside. That millimeter was just an estimate by Du Fan; the control must be even more precise. He himself couldn’t achieve such delicate control, whether through magic or combat energy.
The old man handed Du Fan a dusty chair, while he sat in his usual chair, which remained clean. The old man sat down first and pointed to the chair next to Du Fan, saying, “Sit down.”
Du Fan resigned himself to sitting down. After all, he hadn’t changed his clothes yet, and he didn’t know how to resist the old man.
As if suddenly remembering something, the old man stood up again and poured a cup of water from a kettle whose original color could no longer be seen. While pouring, he murmured, “Your battle must have been tough today. Here, drink some water.”
Hearing this, Du Fan stood up abruptly. He had been excited for so long, yet the old man seemed unimpressed at all. Du Fan felt as though he was always being led around by the old man.
The old man smiled and handed him the cup of water. “You don’t need to make such a face. It’s not me who sent you here; I just know a little bit.”
The old man gestured for Du Fan to drink the water. It was then that Du Fan noticed the water in the old man’s hand. It looked like ordinary water, but it contained a “Source Power” purer than holy water. Holy water tended to favor light magic and could also have some effect on other types, but it was most effective for light-based magic and combat energy.
This water could be seen as a source of power, filled with vitality!
“I have no intention of harming you. I’ll need your help in the future,” the old man said as he sat down. “Let me think… I seem to be able to see some things in the future. That’s why I came here a year ago when I knew you would arrive.”
The old man spoke casually. Could he really control over nine hundred people at will? But he didn’t care what Du Fan thought of him. Du Fan didn’t hesitate either—parts of his body still ached, and it would be foolish not to use the medicine now!
Seeing Du Fan drink the water, the old man continued, “The Dark Demon Clan’s Bluebloods… What do you think? You must know about Bluebloods, right?”
Du Fan nodded.
The old man continued, “Let me think… Bluebloods, and the Day of the Agreement.”
Du Fan interrupted him, “I don’t want to deal with any Day of the Agreement. I know about Bluebloods too. To me, they’re just people who stand in the way of my interests. I won’t care about anything else.”
The old man wasn’t angered by Du Fan’s attitude; instead, his smile grew even wider. “Good, good, good! Truly worthy of being from the Green family!”
Du Fan frowned. “I’m Du Fan. I’m just myself, with nothing to do with the Green family.”
This time, the old man said nothing more. Du Fan continued, “I don’t know why you came here. To be a bit arrogant, I suppose I can assume you came here to wait for me?”
The old man nodded. “I indeed came here to wait for you, soul from another world.”
Upon hearing this, Du Fan trembled slightly before returning to normal. The old man softly recited, “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light in the world…”
As soon as the old man finished speaking, the dimly lit cottage gradually began to emit light. Du Fan noticed that the light came from everything in the room—cabinets, tables, chairs, books, kettles…
“Surprised?”
Du Fan admitted bluntly, “Surprised. I never expected to find someone who could perform such miracles here, and laughably enough, someone who claims to be waiting for me! By calling it a ‘miracle,’ I don’t mean I believe in gods. To me, a god is just a person with great strength.”
The old man was stunned for a moment before bursting into laughter. “Good, good! Just a person with great strength! That’s absolutely true! It’s just a group of people with great strength!!”
The old man laughed arrogantly. For a brief instant, Du Fan felt he no longer appeared hunched; although still sitting, he seemed like a rock—tall and resolute!
“That’s the spirit! What gods, what angels, what apostles! As long as one has enough strength, they can call themselves gods!” The old man seemed satisfied with Du Fan’s words. “I really wasn’t wrong about you!”
Du Fan had merely repeated his atheistic views from his past life, but what he said was also true now. The so-called gods were just a group of powerful people who called themselves that.
“Not bad thinking, but your strength isn’t enough yet. You mentioned the Holy Rank, domains, and gods… which means you’ve already glimpsed that world. I won’t say much more. You should know that you’re quite strong among ordinary people, but against gods, your strength isn’t sufficient.”
“Don’t underestimate the Bluebloods. Utrecht is just a minor figure, and Alexander doesn’t even have his current strength yet. If it weren’t for fear of being discovered by the Twenty-Two Apostles, he would have unleashed his power long ago. That little guy, Alexander, even if he used his full power, wouldn’t be a match for you unless he had Utrecht by his side. What a pity…”
As he spoke, the old man looked regretful. If it weren’t for Du Fan knowing he could never defeat this seemingly powerless old man, he would have punched him already. What did “what a pity” mean? Did he deserve to die?
“The Blue Bloods are still a pretty big problem for you, but not impossible to deal with. Still, that kind of power is dangerous for you too. Want to give it a try?”
