Chapter 6: Kill Without Pity
Onia was somewhat surprised by the performance of those lower races’ armies in the Caucasus. In his mind, faced with the fury of the Thunder God, these lower races should have fled in panic. Yet the situation before him greatly defied his expectations.
Although two infantry formations had collapsed, there was no sign of complete disarray. To be honest, the effects of lightning-based magic attacks were not very effective. Though these formidable lower races feared lightning magic greatly, it was mainly a psychological fear. In reality, their thick armor and tower shields helped reduce the damage significantly. The barbarian infantry of those two formations, though scattered, seemed well-prepared—officers immediately rushed out to urge the panicked soldiers to regroup. What shocked Onia even more was how quickly those soldiers managed to rally behind their main forces. Though they couldn’t immediately regain their original combat strength, it was still enough to be alarming. Such an army was beyond Onia’s imagination.
What surprised Onia even more was the adaptability of the following waves of barbarian and orcish infantry to the lightning magic attacks. They constantly changed formations, avoiding the attacks while also deliberately speeding forward, hoping to force the spellcasters to hesitate by bringing themselves into contact with Homer’s army as soon as possible. This intention was obvious, and it made Onia admire the tactical flexibility of these Caucasian army commanders.
“Onia, why do these lower races possess such strong mental resilience and adaptability?” asked the masked holy woman who had stood silently beside Onia, also realizing the abnormality of the situation.
“Miss Elena, it seems the Caucasians came prepared. They not only knew of our arrival but also trained specifically for this.” Onia nodded, his gaze still fixed on the battlefield. “This isn’t a good sign, but it’s not time to draw conclusions yet. Perhaps we should try a different type of magic.”
“Hmm. Light magic isn’t very effective against these lower races. Let Salenko and the others use fire magic arrays to teach those damned barbarians a lesson.” The mask on the holy woman’s face trembled slightly, as if her emotions were affected.
“Okay, I have to go help them. If we’re going to fight, let’s finish them off completely in one go!” Onia nodded in agreement as well. Fire magic arrays were undoubtedly the best way to deal with such large-scale group attacks. Turning those barbarians and half-orcs into roasted pigs would be a delightful task. However, creating a fire magic array capable of ending the battle in one shot wasn’t something that could be accomplished by just one or two magicians—even a Holy Light Saint couldn’t do it.
Detection magic immediately conveyed to Komer the wildly intense fluctuations of fire elements in the air. “Damn it, those trashers from the Holy Church! They’re using fire magic to attack my precious soldiers!”
Although Tianhua Shentou drained a significant amount of Komer’s mana, it achieved the effect he wanted. A milky-white light column gently enveloped Clarence, allowing this master of earth magic to feel for the first time how rich and pure the mana within his body was. Earthquake Rift was a high-level earth magic spell that wasn’t very useful in direct magician battles or one-on-one fights, but it had unexpected advantages in warfare—this was also why earth mages were highly favored by armies.
Leclerc’s intuition almost saved the entire knight order. The slight tremors coming from beneath the ground definitely couldn’t have been caused by horse hooves. The faint magical aura made Leclerc’s hair stand on end. His extreme vigilance against magical attacks kept him constantly detecting changes in the magical elements around him. At that moment, the intense earth element aura made him realize immediately that something terrible was about to happen.
His extensive combat experience allowed Leclerc to react correctly right away. It was almost as if a roar from the depths of his soul prompted the knights of the entire order to instinctively pull back on their reins and slow down. Leclerc’s roar saved the lives of hundreds of knights.
The force with which they pulled back on their reins nearly broke the bits. Their long-held discipline also prevented greater losses. Cracks appeared suddenly within twenty meters in front of the knight order. If not for Leclerc’s fierce roar stopping their rapid advance, most of them would have fallen into those deep chasms.
Even so, nearly two hundred apprentice knights still plunged into the several-meter-deep fissures. Cries of people and neighs of horses echoed incessantly. The apprentice knights who fell into the chasms had clearly never experienced such a terrifying scene before; the sudden transformation of flat ground into dangerous ravines was beyond their comprehension.
Leclerc, Bronic, and several senior knights who were at the forefront all found themselves trapped in the ravined terrain without exception. Yet for them, such terrain obstacles were nothing worth mentioning—the ravines spanning dozens of meters could not stop the knights from advancing. Leclerc and his companions effortlessly leaped out of the ravines with a few skillful jumps, earning nods of approval from Vladkov and Sorenberg, who watched from across the way.
“Impressive skills! Sorenberg, that guy in the purple robe is mine!” A rare smile appeared on Vladkov’s stern face. He had initially thought it was just a magician’s performance, with him leading these rough barbarians as mere backdrop. But now it seemed there were still worthy opponents in the opposing camp, which filled him with joy. A war without thrilling challenges would be far too boring.
“Hmm, that white-robed knight is mine—decided!” Sorenberg didn’t argue with Vladkov. Bronic’s agile figure also piqued his interest greatly. Fighting such a knight would make this battle worthwhile; he had no interest in the one-sided slaughter of soldiers. As a high-ranking knight at his level, he only hoped for more opportunities to hone his skills.
Komer glanced at the pale-faced Clarence. The man had done his best. Even with the significant support from his own Divine Enlightenment magic, he was now exhausted. If only they could unleash the Earth Split again—it would be perfect. Unfortunately, his own magical power was too weak; there was only Clarence, a earth magic user.
Lord Leclerc’s keen intuition saved these knights. All the effort put into creating the Earth Split only yielded a few hundred apprentice knights. While the war seemed glorious on the surface, the elite of the knight order wasn’t greatly affected. Lord Leclerc’s prowess remained unchanged. Komer looked back with regret at Leclerc, who was still riding forward, preparing to launch an attack from the flank. That man was truly talented—too bad he was loyal to Philip. It would be great if he could serve Komer instead.
After casting another Divine Blessing restoration spell on Clarence, his complexion improved slightly. But it was unrealistic to expect him to cast large-scale magic like the Earth Split again, even with his own magical energy. Without two to three hours to recover, Clarence could only use some smaller spells to ease his frustration.
As the aura of fire elements enveloped the entire battlefield, Komer’s spell, Wrath of the Water God, was also ready. He had realized that passively reacting to the enemy’s attacks would eventually cost a price, but now, faced with the fierce gathering of fire elements, he had no choice but to endure this first. Only after overcoming this challenge could he truly have a chance to counterattack.
Flames of Annihilation!
Both Newman and Schaeffer showed expressions of shock. Half of the sky took on a strange pale golden hue, which instantly transformed into a crimson glow that poured forward slowly yet relentlessly, like a surging river or mercury spreading across the ground, sweeping over the front lines of the knightly order with an unstoppable force.
The scorching flames swept across the ground, turning vegetation to ash and soil black. An unpleasant burnt smell filled the air. Before anyone could react, the barbarian soldiers of both factions were rolling around in the flames, screaming in agony. Within seconds, their massive bodies turned into shriveled coals. This unimaginably powerful magical fire display served as a harsh lesson for everyone present.
A moment later, Wrath of the Water God finally arrived. The wall of water it created tenaciously resisted the advancing wall of fire. The clash of these two opposing magics created a scene where fire and water seemed to blend together.
Komer, whose eyes were almost bursting from strain, though prepared mentally, was deeply wounded by seeing his soldiers turn into coals in an instant. The sight of them writhing in pain was like a sharp knife piercing his heart. These soldiers were the foundation upon which he had conquered Homer and eventhe entire Nicosia. Yet these damned Light Church scum had joined forces to use such brutal magic against them. This had gone beyond a mere military confrontation and turned into a battle between their magicians! It seemed he had forgotten that this was a life-or-death struggle—Philip would be destroyed, or it would be Komer’s turn! Homer would vanish, or the Caucasus would come to an end!
With red eyes, Komer barely managed to spit out a few words through his teeth: “Mihajic, release all your metal puppets!”
After shouting those words, the face twisted in fury, Komer silently used magic to send a message afar: “Uma, it’s your turn to step forward! Don’t disappoint me. Target— the Court Mage Corps! Kill them all!”
