Chapter 528: Enlil’s Legacy
No one was surprised that Donald had tamed this powerful puppet creature, as they had all witnessed his methods. It was only when they learned that the Sphinx was a demigod elevated to divinity through puppets that they became curious.
Legends spoke of a mysterious and ancient mechanical realm in the heavens, inhabited by sentient puppets and construct lifeforms, but it was merely a legend. Even Chickofield, who had lived for nearly two thousand years and seen many wonders, had never encountered it.
Yet, everyone was merely astonished. What mattered most now was the greatest treasure in this divine tomb!
The disturbance caused by the opening of the divine tomb would spread outward, so they had to end the battle before other adventurers arrived and take away everything of value.
Donald nodded at the Sphinx, which then said, “The Earth King perished through a self-destructive explosion, dying alongside his enemies. Unlike those gods killed by their foes, he wasn’t fully corrupted by resentment. Thus, he usually slept in his temple, experiencing countless illusions from his past life in dreams. Only when outsiders entered the temple’s bounds would he be awakened, triggering a frenzied attack.”
Under normal circumstances, a divine tomb was like a dungeon in Donald’s past-life games. No matter how powerful the tomb’s owner had been or how high their status among the gods, once they died, all their powers were sealed within their own divine tomb, preventing them from moving an inch or sensing anything outside. Even fallen high gods were subject to such restrictions within their own tombs.
“Occasionally, the Earth King would wake up for a brief moment, but soon fall back into chaos. Even though he was now nothing but a will formed from his remaining soul and resentment, his strength still surpassed that of ordinary true gods. So, it’s best if everyone brings their strongest spells and tactics. We must destroy his twisted will immediately, before he can react. Otherwise, we’ll face a terrifying situation!”
To the Sphinx, the fallen Earth King was no longer its master—just a twisted, mad will of resentment. Destroying this will was also a way to free its former master, and the Sphinx had no reservations, fully hoping that Donald and his companions would succeed.
“Then let’s all prepare our most powerful spells and tactics! We’ll start in ten breaths.”
After Donald spoke, the two spellcasters, Chikofield and Colin, began to prepare first. There is a proverb in the Mainland: never confront a prepared mage, for you can never guess what spell he will cast next! Powerful beings like Archmages and Legendary Archmages—given enough time to prepare—could even cause even true gods to suffer heavy losses! It should be noted that mages and archmages are among the most skilled professions in the Main World at overcoming the stronger with the weaker, whether through pre-prepared spells, alchemical tools, spell traps, or magic arrays, all of which can lead their enemies to unexpected failures! Ten breaths may not be long, but it’s enough time for two legendary spellcasters to prepare some powerful spells. Of course, their most formidable tactics had already been prepared as trump cards before entering the Ruins of Oblivion. What they prepared now were merely auxiliary methods that might be needed later. Donald, as the third powerful spellcaster present, was the same—only his true form was not here. Aside from his two exclusive legendary spells, this Demon Hunter avatar was not a dedicated spellcasting profession, so it could only cast spells below level seven that his true form possessed. For opponents at the level of true gods, these mid-to-low-level spells had little impact! Of course, the Demon Hunter avatar also had its own powerful skills, whose strength was no less than that of true gods wielding their divine powers and legendary spells. When the two mages present stood up again and saw that enough time had passed, Donald exchanged a glance with the King of the North, then waved his hand. A group of ten people stepped onto the temple plaza at the top of the mountain in the formation they had agreed upon earlier. “Who… disturbs my slumber…” As soon as Donald and the others entered the temple area, the entire mountain platform began to tremble slightly. A deep voice seemed to come from within the earth. “Who am I? Why does this place feel so familiar…” A phantom figure over a hundred feet tall appeared in front of the temple, its eyes filled with confusion. The willful deity in the tomb was a divine being formed from the strong obsession left after the death of a true god. Its memories of its life were already vague, and after a long time, worn down by resentment, it had long forgotten its past. The previous Sphinx had a lion’s body and a male human face, but this deity was the opposite—having a lion’s head with a strong human body beneath.
Once it broke free from the confused state of awakening, the deity immediately roared at the sky.
“Kill! All enemies must die…”
Clearly, this guy had gone mad due to some kind of stimulus.
“Attack!”
As Donald’s voice rang out, the King of the North’s Frost Domain instantly enveloped the temple square. The others, except for the spellcaster, took advantage of the moment the deity was frozen by the domain’s power and launched attacks infused with their own domain forces at the Lion-Headed Deity.
Affected by the Frost Domain, the Lion-Headed Deity quickly broke free, unleashing immense power that sent shockwaves, reflecting back Carlisle’s, the Warhammer God’s, and others’ attacks.
But the arrogance of the Lion-Headed Deity came to an end when Chikofield pointed at it and cast his legendary spell.
“No—”
With a defiant roar, the deity’s form dissolved into a burst of light, being sucked into a fist-sized, peculiar gem held by the Archmage.
This was the Legendary Spell Gem Prison—a spell that could lure a target creature to willingly enter the gem under control. The value of the gem determined whether the target would be lured. If the caster had a gem of sufficient value, they could force the spell’s effect; if the target couldn’t resist and failed to resist, it would vanish and be imprisoned inside the gem.
If the caster wished, they could release the creature from the gem later, and it would retain its state before being sucked in.
The Lion-Headed Deity had once been incredibly powerful, but now it was merely a divine being formed from willpower. It was called a deity because of its godlike combat strength and some divine traits, but in essence, it was just a pitiful twisted will that shouldn’t exist!
Thus, lacking a physical form, it was especially vulnerable to this spell and was quickly trapped by its opponent.
“That’s not right. This is just an avatar, the Earth King’s combat form. The real body is somewhere else—”
Just as everyone else was excited about the defeat of the Tomb Lord, Sphinx suddenly shouted.
As soon as the demi-god puppet finished speaking, everyone felt an even more powerful pressure, leaving them stunned.
The figure of a middle-aged man, looking like an ordinary person, appeared before them, standing quietly with no emotion in his eyes.
“Sphinx, why did you betray me?”
Upon seeing this figure, a complex expression flashed in the Sphinx’s eyes. It spoke, “I haven’t betrayed anyone!”
“Have you forgotten your master, your creator—the King of the Earth, Enlil?”
“Of course not, but you are not the great Enlil; you are merely an idea unwilling to be destroyed!”
Hearing this, the middle-aged man trembled, his face showing sorrow and longing as he sighed.
“Yes! I am not Enlil. The once-mighty heavens and gods have been destroyed and vanished. The supreme Anu is also missing, and my brothers and children have all perished! I just refuse to admit it all. Thank you for waking me up, Sphinx!”
With that, the middle-aged man turned his gaze toward Donald’s Demon Hunter avatar and the Wrath of Nature in his hands.
“Stranger, the domains you possess are similar to my powers. As the new master of the Sphinx, I hope you will treat it kindly, for it is now the last remnant of our Babylonian pantheon! Consider this your reward!”
Before his words faded, the middle-aged man’s figure began to fade, emitting countless light particles. With a look of relief on his face, he disappeared. All the light particles converged into a brilliant 24-sided crystal, drifting toward Donald.
With a gentle wave of his hand, Donald caught the crystal and let it merge into his body. He wasn’t surprised that Enlil’s remaining will could see through the contract between the Sphinx and himself. What surprised him was that this King of the Earth had so generously given up the chance to continue existing through twisted thoughts and chosen complete liberation instead!
Although they were envious that the master of this divine tomb was offering benefits to Donald, none of the others present felt greedy, even the two outsiders, the God of the Red River and the God of Warhammer. As a subordinate favored by the God of White Mountain, having an upright character was the bare minimum requirement.
Feeling the divine essence that had settled beside his core of divinity, Donald couldn’t help but exclaim, “High gods are truly powerful. Even after all these years since this King of the Earth fell, the power condensed from his remaining strength still reaches the level of a mid-tier god’s essence. Moreover, it includes not only the domains of nature and earth but also powerful areas such as calamity and judgment.”
Donald saw no need to hide anything from the others present and openly spoke of the benefits he had received. Doing so was more honest and would earn their trust.
