Chapter 111: Invisibility Potion
On the streets not far from the city lord’s mansion in Giantstone City, several figures stood at the entrance of an alley. Since this corner was shaded by the buildings on either side, no one noticed their presence.
“My lord, I’ve investigated thoroughly. Macbeth hasn’t left the mansion today; he’s remained inside. His son, Bolton, has left several times, the last time in the evening, and hasn’t returned yet!” “Hmm! You’ve done well! After today’s mission, you’ll be free. If you wish to stay in my territory, accommodations have been arranged for you. There’s a need for people in the guard force and the mansion—feel free to join at any time. If you don’t want to stay, you can leave as well. I’ll give you enough money to support yourself for the rest of your life!”
Spy Ad was pleased but somewhat hesitant. After glancing at the others present, he finally made up his mind. “My lord, I intend to stay in Dalaran. But my strongest skill is still spying. I hope you still need me to gather intelligence for you!” “Good! I’m in need of spies like you. I’ll train some people. If you perform well, the position of head spy in Dalaran could be yours in the future!”
“Thank you, my lord! Many thanks!” After that, Donald began asking about the interior of the city lord’s mansion. “My lord, the mansion is heavily guarded. There are guards in at least three layers patrolling everywhere. Without breaking in forcefully, only silver-ranked assassins or thieves could sneak in! I’m just a black-iron thief, and my stealth skills aren’t that good…” Donald replied, “No need for such complications! Tell me, does Macbeth not have any mages above silver rank?” Ad shook his head to indicate no.
“That makes things easier. This is an invisibility potion. If you drink it and avoid attacking or making noise, no one will detect you!” Donald explained this only to Ad. Uther and the others, being heroes, mostly relied on Donald’s memories and thus knew the effects of potions created by magical creatures.
The hidden potion manifested from the Book of Truth can block all light and shadow effects around the user, ensuring they remain unseen as long as they stay away from those stronger than black iron rank. Generally, only a mage of bronze rank or above can use detection spells of level three or higher to reveal such hidden beings. Yet even bronze mages wouldn’t waste mana constantly casting detection spells. Therefore, unless it’s a silver mage whose mental power can instantly cover a wide area and sense every subtle change around, or a silver warrior highly sensitive to environmental changes, no one in the city lord’s mansion should be able to detect their presence.
Of course, if they move too much or get too close to others, they will naturally be seen.
This potion is simply the best equipment for assassins and thieves. Combined with their own stealth skills, it could likely achieve the stealth level of a silver assassin, even enabling attacks beyond their usual rank.
With the potion in hand, at Donald’s command, the four of them drank it together, and instantly their figures vanished without a trace.
“Let’s go! Lead the way!”
The four of them strode to the base of the city lord’s mansion wall and lightly scaled over it.
Inside the city lord’s mansion in Giant Stone City, with Ad, the scout familiar with the terrain, leading the way, the four, having concealed their identities, passed by groups of patrolling guards until they reached a sealed courtyard in the inner part of the mansion.
“Stop!”
Having reached this point, Donald suddenly gave an order, and the other three stopped in their tracks.
“Lord, why stop? This is Macbeth’s secret study. All major confidential matters are discussed here. Aside from his core subordinates and his eldest son, Bolton, not even his most favored viscountess is allowed to approach. Macbeth hasn’t slept in his own bedroom for three days now; he must be here in this courtyard. This is the safest place in the mansion, so no guards are stationed here, which makes it perfect for us to enter!” Donald gazed thoughtfully at the walls of the exquisite courtyard, a faint smile on his lips. “Although there are no guards patrolling here, the entire courtyard is surrounded by a magical barrier—likely a warning barrier that triggers an alarm at the slightest touch. If anyone tries to sneak in with the same intention as you, they’ll be surrounded by a group of experts before they even manage to climb over the wall, leaving them trapped!”
“What?”
Ad was shocked and broke into a cold sweat at the thought of what might happen if he acted rashly. Then he said in doubt, “But I know the Macbeth family has trained many assassins and swordsmen, yet they only have one mage at the beginning of the Black Iron rank and two apprentices. It’s impossible for them to devise such a tactic, right?”
“Of course not, but don’t underestimate any noble family. After all, the Macbeths have been nobles for almost three years, so it’s not surprising they have a few magical items as backup,” Ad replied. He wasn’t a core member of the Macbeth family; he usually followed orders and was responsible for spying from outside, so he had never entered their inner residence. It was natural he wasn’t aware of such things.
Hearing that Donald didn’t seem to blame him, Ad breathed a sigh of relief. “My lord, then how do we get in?” “Be patient. The opportunity will come soon.”
After saying that, he fell silent. Uther and Kelsas, aside from their master Donald, were both quiet people who didn’t like to interact much with others.
So among them, only Ad found the waiting process unbearable, as time seemed to pass slowly. Fortunately, he had been trained as an assassin, so he could endure it.
It was just that thinking about his future under this young lord of Dalaran kept his mind restless.
During Ad’s agonizing few seconds of waiting, half an hour passed quickly. Suddenly, Donald whispered, “They’re here! Be quiet!” Ad immediately held his breath, not daring to even take a deep breath, fearing he might disrupt his new master’s plans.
Shortly after Donald spoke, a middle-aged man who looked like a butler came from the brightly lit inner residence with two maids, who carried meal trays, likely bringing snacks for their master.
Only then did Donald take the chance to whisper, “Follow him, and we can get in. Be careful and don’t let him notice us!”
At that moment, Ad truly admired his new master’s wisdom. The method was so simple, yet he hadn’t thought of it before.
When the three of them reached the courtyard gate, the middle-aged butler said, “Alright, give me the items, and you can go.” The two maids weren’t surprised at all, probably used to this situation. They carefully handed over the two wooden trays to the butler and bowed before leaving.
The butler took out an object that resembled a badge and pressed it against the door, which then opened on its own. At that moment, Ad heard Donald’s low voice in his ear.
“Action!”
Among the four, Uther and Donald were the most skilled, as both were warriors by profession. Without even causing a breeze, they rushed past the middle-aged butler and entered the courtyard first.
As for Ad and Kelthas, one was a trained Dark Iron thief, and the other, though a mage, was also a nimble high elf, so both managed to infiltrate smoothly.
The middle-aged butler was just an ordinary person and naturally didn’t notice anything. If it had been someone else—even just a warrior at the peak of Dark Iron level—they would have easily sensed something was wrong.
After entering the courtyard, the butler headed straight to one of the study rooms in the main building, unaware that he was bringing four intruders closer to his master.
“Master, take a break! Dinner is ready.”
At that moment, Viscount Macbeth was sitting behind his desk, reviewing documents. Having been plotting major actions for days, he had already stayed in this secret study for three days. Since it involved the growth of his family, he had to be extremely cautious, so everything had to be done secretly without any leaks.
“Put it down! I’ll use it later!”
As soon as Macbeth spoke, a third voice rang out in the study.
“I think you’d better enjoy this last meal! Because you won’t get another chance after this!”
“Who?”
Despite being tired, Macbeth remained alert. His face turned pale with shock as he reached for a badge on the desk.
But at that moment, a dark streak of light struck his body. Before his hand could even reach halfway, he froze like a statue.
Meanwhile, the butler, still not understanding what was happening, was knocked unconscious by Uther’s sudden attack.
As the two cast spells and launched attacks, they stepped out of their invisibility, revealing themselves in the study.
Though completely stiff and unable to move even his eyelids, Macbeth still had his senses intact, including vision, which didn’t hinder his thinking.
Seeing that it was Donald, the thorn in his side, he knew he was doomed today.
This was a third-level spell called Human Stun, prepared by Donald from the moment he entered the room. It was learned from other schools of magic collected by his teacher, Maelthor.
Although it takes some time to cast, its effect is extremely significant. It can instantly render a humanoid creature immobile, with the duration determined by the caster’s own level and strength. Of course, the target can also try to break free from the spell’s effect, but without special items or power, they would need to be at least on par with the caster to have a chance of escaping in a short time.
Watching Macbeth trapped like a human statue, Donald didn’t act like the villains in past films and TV shows—becoming arrogant after a minor victory and giving the protagonist a chance to turn the situation around, only to meet a tragic end.
“A lion fighting a rabbit still uses all its strength. I never believe in any ‘protagonist trope.’ It’s better to be cautious and act as a proper big boss—treat enemies with ruthless efficiency, like autumn wind sweeping away leaves!”
With his enemy right before him, Donald rarely spoke in the language of his past life. Of course, aside from Uther and the two heroes who inherited some of his memories and knowledge, no one present understood the deeper meaning.
But Macbeth could grasp the basic meaning of those words, which made his heart turn even colder—he realized he couldn’t escape this time.
