Chapter 66: Night Attack
A few crisp sounds were heard, followed by several flashes of cold light that seemed to illuminate the entire dark room, casting a chilling atmosphere.
“Run!” Yada shouted loudly, pulling Rod with her as they rushed toward the window, trying to escape before drawing their swords to fight back.
“Want to leave? That’s not so easy!” A breeze blew, and suddenly someone appeared in front of them, raising his long sword and swinging it fiercely at Rod.
“Go call the captain! I’ll hold them off here!” Rod shouted, pushing Yada away while dodging to the side.
At the same time, Dark Dragon was drawn from its sheath, slicing through the air with a crisp sound as it intercepted the incoming sword. This was the second time Rod had used it since it recognized him, and he felt a stark difference from before—it was much lighter, almost imperceptible in his hands, with no sense of weight. After drawing a arc, it collided with the opponent’s weapon.
Clang—a sharp sound, followed by sparks. Seizing this moment, Rod twisted aside to avoid those attacking from behind and quickly leaped to the side.
Yada had already left the room through the window. Seeing this, Rod breathed a sigh of relief. He gathered all his inner energy and launched a fierce counterattack.
Swinging his long sword, he executed basic attacks like thrusts, slashes, and cuts with perfect precision—skills honed through thousands of practice sessions!
Facing the attacks of the four men in black, he remained unfazed. Though all four were strong, including two advanced warriors, Rod wasn’t at a disadvantage and grew more courageous with each battle.
“Kill!” With a roar, he charged forward, wielding his sword with mastery. Using the darkness as cover, a dark streak flashed through the enemy ranks. After turning, he used momentum to deliver a final strike. Dark Dragon let out a low growl, followed by a dull thud.
Yet to Rod, that sound sounded like music. Despite the bloodshed, he had managed to seriously injure one of his attackers.
Footsteps came from outside the door. A smile appeared on Rod’s lips—he knew the captain and the others must have arrived to rescue them after receiving Yada’s distress signal.
“Go!” It seemed they too had heard the noise outside. In the pitch darkness, Rod saw the three attackers supporting the man he had wounded. After exchanging glances, they shouted in a deep voice. “Trying to escape? Die!” With a cold smirk, Rod picked up his sword, full of fighting spirit. How could he miss such an opportunity? His sword swept toward the three of them like a storm of blades, accompanied by a howling sound, forcing them to defend themselves chaotically.
Suddenly, chaotic noises came from outside, along with the sound of weapons clashing and shouts. Hearing this, Rod’s brows furrowed tightly as an ominous premonition spread through his heart. Could there be more enemies in ambush? No, that couldn’t be! Clearly, these people’s target tonight was just him. They hadn’t even paid attention to Aida’s escape, focusing entirely on him!
Moreover, they had said they were leaving when he heard footsteps earlier. That meant they were planning to withdraw, which proved that only a few of them had come for this mission, and their target was him. So what was causing the fighting noises outside now?
Frowning deeply and feeling a surge in his heart, as if realizing something, his expression changed drastically. Without the mood to continue fighting, he retreated toward the door while fighting.
Rod’s decision to back off was exactly what those men wanted. The pressure of being at a disadvantage vanished instantly, and they breathed a sigh of relief. They glared fiercely at Rod before quickly leaving, supported by their comrades, and disappearing through the window under the cover of the dark night.
The fighting outside grew louder. Without taking a moment to catch his breath, Rod rushed to the door. What he saw outside shocked him. Members of the Windy Mercenaries, led by their captain Randy, were fighting fiercely against a group of men in black. Meanwhile, soldiers from the Dark Legion, under the leadership of that officer, were also busy protecting the two stunning women as they struggled to move outward, seemingly trying to break through and leave the shop.
“Damn it, they caught up so fast?” Seeing this, everything became clear. There was no need to guess—these men in black must be the same group that had ambushed them during the day. He just didn’t expect them to catch up so quickly.
Still led by the man in black from the day before, his figure made it clear—especially the faint golden armor formed by the golden warrior’s ultimate combat energy was striking. He was locked in a fierce struggle with an officer from the Dark Legion. The clashes between the two golden warriors created a roaring wind, and their dazzling moves carried terrifying destructive power; no one dared to approach.
And at this moment, wasn’t Aida also fighting hard among the crowd? She unleashed one brilliant fire spell after another, with flashes of light seemingly trying to illuminate the darkness. As for the hotel owner? He had already disappeared, probably scared off by the scene. After all, would he stay and wait for death?
With a loud roar and no hesitation, she rushed into the battle, wielding her Dark Dragon Blade as she made her way to Randy’s side. Seeing the others struggling, she immediately launched a fierce attack on the man in black. At this point, any help to ease the pressure on everyone was valuable—however much it might be.
As the battle escalated, the original neatness of the small shop vanished, turning into chaos. Tables and chairs were scattered everywhere, and the floor was no longer clean; the bright red blood was particularly jarring. The bodies lying everywhere created a stark visual impact. Not only the man in black but also numerous soldiers from the Dark Legion had fallen. With only dozens left, they suffered heavy losses in this battle. Now, less than ten people remained surrounding the two women.
As for the Swift Wind Mercenaries, their situation wasn’t much better either. Everyone was covered in wounds. Perhaps only Rod and the two mages were in better condition. Rod arrived late and stayed close to Randy, so he barely faced any direct attacks. As for Cheri and Aida, it was likely because they were mages—as mages, they were always protected. As long as there were comrades around, they remained the safest ones.
Although many of the men in black had fallen, there were still too many newcomers, giving them an increasingly clear advantage. And just then, another group of men in black arrived to join the fight, instantly giving them a overwhelming edge.
“Rod, go first! Hurry, take the two ladies with you. You, Ada, and Chelly, go ahead—we’ll hold them off here. Quick, remember! As long as one of us is alive, we must complete this mission. The Swift Wind Mercenaries have never failed a mission! Bit, go with them!”
Standing back to back, wiping the blood from his forehead, Randy spoke in a deep voice, not giving Ada and Chelly, who were casting magic, any chance to object. With a loud shout, he shielded the three behind him and charged at the men in black again. Knowing that continuing meant certain death, Randy made a painful decision: he would let Rod and the others leave to buy time, as only that way could there be a glimmer of hope.
“Captain!” a loud shout came from all four of them.
“It’s an order. If you don’t want to see me die with unfinished business, do as I say. Hurry! Heh, what does it matter if I die? Bruce is waiting over there for me to fight again. It’s fine this way. Go quickly!” After a hearty laugh, Randy’s attacks became even more fierce.
“Let’s go! Don’t waste the captain’s kindness!”
There was a moment of silence. After Bit killed one of the men in black, he spoke in a low voice to the group.
“Go!” After staring deeply at Captain Randy and his fellow mercenaries fighting in the crowd, seeing their battered appearances, he clenched his fists and growled softly. His hoarse voice surprised everyone.
The two mages also said little, moving toward the two ladies under Rod and Bit’s cover.
After much effort, they finally reached the soldiers of the Dark Legion. Seeing the several soldiers standing there, each covered in wounds with blood staining their armor, their dark armor took on a dark red hue in the dim light, giving off an eerie appearance.
“Take the ladies and go first! Hurry!” The officer of the Dark Legion shouted loudly upon seeing Rod and the others.
With disheveled hair and a disheveled appearance, it was hard to associate him with the cold officer from before. Perhaps realizing that today would likely end in disaster, he placed all his hopes on Rod and the others.
“Follow me!”
Approaching the lady, Rod growled softly, his tone leaving no room for refusal.
“I won’t go! No one’s leaving!” Her voice was calm, surprisingly so. Her expression remained unchanged, still composed, without the panic or helplessness one might expect.
“Damn it, go! Do you want to see more people die for you? Idiot, just a useless ornament—still slowing things down here at a time like this?” With a darkened expression, he shouted loudly, grabbed her hand, and led her outside. Under the cover of several soldiers and Bit’s protection, and with magic clearing the way, they struggled to make their way out.
