Chapter 308: Crisis

For three days—three full days—Rod and Lucy wandered through the Death Battlefield. Even so, they remained at its edge, from where they could gauge just how vast it was. Meanwhile, their progress slowed down significantly; constant attacks from magical beasts made it extremely difficult to move forward.

Since encountering the Black Cloud Leopard upon entering the Death Battlefield, they had killed nine magical beasts in those three days—almost three per day on average. All of them were quite powerful, with the weakest being at the late pre-divine level. Three were at the early divine level, three at the mid-divine level, and two at the late divine level—such a lineup was truly formidable.

By now, both of them appeared tired and strained. Prolonged concentration had taken its toll on them. Although the magical beasts they encountered weren’t a serious threat at this point, they still had to be cautious, as carelessness could lead to trouble.

Lucy also demonstrated great strength, her sharp magical attacks and defenses providing significant support to Rod, allowing him to trust her enough to leave his back unprotected while she handled defense.

Looking up at the time, Rod realized it was getting late. He scratched his head and said to Lucy, who looked exhausted, “Let’s find a place to rest! It’s not suitable to move forward at night.”

Lucy naturally didn’t refuse Rod’s request. She had wanted to rest anyway, but seeing his urgent and serious expression, she didn’t dare say anything. She could only grit her teeth and keep moving—until finally, she let out a deep sigh of relief.

After searching the area, they found a small mound. On top of it, Rod made some simple arrangements to settle down—this would be their shelter for the night.

Meanwhile, Lucy worked behind them, casting seals and murmuring complex spells to create a magical barrier. It wouldn’t be wise to rest here without any preparations in such a dangerous place.

As night fell, the entire Death Battlefield was enveloped in darkness. The already thick aura of gloom seemed to intensify under the night sky. Cold winds howled eerily, as if countless souls were crying, sending chills down one’s spine.

The arrival of night also meant a change in the masters of the Death Battlefield. The magical beasts that were active during the day disappeared almost entirely, replaced by those that hunted at night.

The death battlefield at night is the most dangerous place. Swarms of magical beasts, no less powerful than those during the day, exist in much larger numbers. Such pack-oriented beasts are something no one wants to provoke, even Rod and Lucy. Though they are quite strong, challenging those beasts now would only lead to certain death. Even many ants can kill an elephant, let alone wolves, tigers, and leopards? A howl came from afar. On a full moon night, the wolf clan becomes the rulers of this land—thanks to their large numbers, formidable strength, coordinated teamwork, tenacious will, and fierce ambition, they are destined to be the kings of this battlefield. A faint putrid smell filled the air, a lingering scent from countless lives lost in ancient times. They lit a campfire and dug a small cave on the hill, just big enough for one person to fit inside. Lucy went inside to rest while Rod stayed outside the cave. After all, Lucy was the lady of the Black Phoenix clan, raised in luxury from a young age, never having endured such hardships. Seeing her exhausted appearance these past few days, Rod felt some pity. Sometimes he even thought it might have been better if he had come alone. But since he had brought her here, he had to take responsibility for taking care of her. With a grateful smile, Lucy entered the cave without refusing. She wouldn’t reject Rod’s kindness, and even if she did, he wouldn’t agree, so there was no need to say anything. Looking at his figure outside the cave, Lucy felt somewhat enchanted. Under the night sky, shrouded in mist, the lifeless death battlefield, with howling winds, saw a strong figure standing in front of her, shielding her from all dangers. For a woman, encountering such a man might make her life worthwhile. Time passed by, and the campfire shone brightly against the gloomy night. In such a dangerous place filled with magical beasts, the campfire served as a defense against enemies. In the distance, Rod spotted several figures approaching. His sharp eyes noticed this immediately, and he focused intensely, gripping his weapon tightly, ready for battle. Gradually, more and more figures appeared, their green eyes like lanterns lighting up the night.

As he got closer, Rod could see the wolves from western Zhejiang clearly: “A wolf pack! Damn it!”
Seeing the magical beasts up close, Rod’s heart skipped a beat. After letting out a cry of shock, he cursed. In the wild, the most terrifying thing wasn’t encountering tigers or fierce beasts—it was wolf packs. They were more dangerous than any other creature. Their high level of unity allowed them to take on any creature, and a sufficient number of wolves could even hunt down powerful magical beasts!
Even magical beasts at the Yin Huang realm might die under their siege. Thinking of this, Rod felt a headache coming on.
No less than a hundred green wolves—what was going on? Why did so many appear suddenly? A wolf pack usually wasn’t this large. What exactly had happened? Realizing the severity of the situation, Rod turned to look inside and said, “Lucy, get ready!”
Lucy seemed to have noticed the situation outside as well. She must have arrived behind Rod at some point, her face pale as she watched the distant scene.
“A wolf pack!” She covered her mouth, unable to suppress a cry of shock.
“Yeah, trouble’s here. Get ready and see if we can break through!” Holding our ground was useless. These wolves were tough enough to keep us trapped here! With such a large number, if they attacked, the two of us wouldn’t be able to hold out. The only option for now was to look for a chance to break through and avoid these troublesome creatures as much as possible.
“Make the fire bigger!” Rod said firmly to Lucy. When the wolf pack was less than a hundred meters away from Rod and the others, their speed slowed down, and the green wolves in front hesitated.
Seeing this, Rod realized the effect of the campfire. He hurriedly told Lucy—when was the time for a fire mage to fail to act? He quickly threw in a lot of burning materials, causing the flames to surge violently!
Awoooom…
The wolf pack in the distance let out restless howls. Wolves living in such a dark place feared fire even more than those living outside. Someone had told Rod this before they entered.
Looking at the dwindling supplies, Rod could only hope to hold out for a while, long enough to find a chance to break through.
The wolf pack gradually tightened its circle, stopping about thirty meters away from Rod and Lucy, almost surrounding the entire small hill. There were not just a hundred wild wolves—there were at least two or three hundred.
How could so many appear so suddenly? What exactly had happened? This made Rod even more puzzled.

“So many!” Lucy murmured in shock, but the next moment, as if she had suddenly realized something, she jumped up and stared at Rod in astonishment, shouting, “No good! It’s the birth of a Wolf King! A Wolf King is born only once every few hundred years. Only when one appears do so many wolves show up—green wolves, red wolves, and gray wolves! All three types of wolves are here; surely the Wolf King has been born!”
“Wolf King!” Rod’s expression changed drastically. It was indeed the Wolf King! He knew a little about this—once every hundred years, a Wolf King would appear, and when that happened, the wolf tribes would reach their peak glory. Under the leadership of the Wolf King, all wolf groups would be united under his command, conquering everything in their path!
Moreover, it was said that the Wolf King’s strength had reached the Yin Huang realm. Today was the day of his birth—was he here? If he appeared now, would he attack him and Lucy right away? It seemed… it seemed he might be a bit unlucky. Thinking of this, Rod forced a wry smile.
“Brother, we need to leave quickly! Otherwise, more and more wolves will come!” Seeing Rod lost in thought, Lucy whispered a reminder.
“Mm, hold on tight to me. Remember, never lose me!” Taking a deep breath, Rod said firmly. Looking around, he indeed saw groups of wolves rushing toward them from afar. In an instant, over a dozen green wolves joined them, forming a group!
In a flash, hundreds of wolves surrounded Rod and Lucy, letting out deep growls, their eyes glowing with a bloodthirsty light, and emitting a strong stench.
Clutching Xuan Yuan tightly in his hand, Rod scanned the surroundings for the weakest point. He focused first on the gray wolves—among the three wolf tribes, their combat strength was undoubtedly the lowest. As for the red wolves, they were unique to the battlefield of death, mutated wolves with the greatest combat strength. It was clear they wouldn’t be the target; these were the best members of the green and gray wolves, mutated beings—provoking them would bring no advantage.
“Over there!” After observing, Rod breathed a sigh of relief. He had found it—a place where only a few white wolves stood, not surrounded like other areas. If they wanted to break through, this was definitely the best spot.
