Chapter 236: The Great Counterattack
At this moment, all the guards on the city walls wore expressions of despair and reluctance. Dragons—three of them—had appeared, an unprecedented event. At least in all previous waves of beasts, no dragons had been seen; only ordinary magical beasts had appeared. It was precisely because of this that, despite the danger, they could still hold their ground. Otherwise, during the earlier waves of beasts, Iron Bar Town would have already been breached, and the continent would have been plunged into chaos.
Everyone understood what the appearance of dragons meant. With three dragons attacking the city, they knew they would eventually fall. Glancing at the man who was nervously giving orders in the distance, though filled with despair, everyone still chose to follow his commands and arrangements, hoping he could bring them hope and lead them to create a miracle and overcome this critical moment once again.
“Roar…” A long howl echoed, and after building up the drama, the three giant dragons finally launched their attack. Their breaths vanished in an instant. Once the oppressive pressure disappeared, everyone felt as if they had suddenly been given fresh air, gasping for breath as they inhaled the blood-stained air.
The magical beasts that had previously knelt on the ground were now revived as well. They all gathered together, standing closely around the three giant dragons, staring intently at the city walls and the damned defenders on top.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Under everyone’s watchful eyes, they moved. The fire dragon took the lead, attacking the western city wall. As the fire dragon attacked, the other two giant dragons followed suit, rushing toward the eastern and central sections, closely behind the first three. The magical beasts that had been attacking the city before seemed greatly inspired; with roars, they charged at the city walls once more.
On the city walls, the magicians had already cast spells, almost all defensive spells, to strengthen the walls. Although Iron Bar Town’s city walls were known as the best defensive system in the continent, this title seemed weak in the face of dragons. Under the force of those dragons’ powerful bodies and monstrous strength, even the strongest defensive systems couldn’t hold out for long. Therefore, magic had to be used to protect the walls. The walls were their foundation; once that foundation was lost, everything would be lost. Without the protection of the walls, they would never be able to withstand the onslaught of the monstrous beast armies.
The magic cast in the sky began to rain down, and as soon as the dragons appeared, they started using their magic to wreak havoc. Although it was mostly basic and intermediate instant spells, the sheer number was overwhelming. Moreover, could the basic spells cast by a god-tier being be compared to those cast by ordinary people? Perhaps they were even comparable to the power of advanced spells cast by a mage.
As the magic continued to wreak havoc, chaos reigned on the city walls, with people falling amidst screams and cries of pain! The walls swayed precariously under the assault of magic, like a small boat adrift at sea, seemingly on the verge of collapsing at any moment.
Under the onslaught of magic, the flying spells once again showed their advantage—creatures flew up onto the walls and charged into the crowd to fight. Their fearless, desperate fighting style revealed true madness and a ferocity akin to that of beasts, sending chills down one’s spine.
More and more magical beasts rushed onto the walls, while others were killed. Soldiers and reinforcements fell one after another, and rescue teams arrived to clear the area.
As deaths continued and the battle grew more brutal, Rod, who stood at the center observing the fighting from all directions, couldn’t help but frown. The situation was becoming increasingly unfavorable for them—almost desperate. With more and more corpses piling up below the walls, human and beast corpses mixed together to form a small hill that kept growing taller. This made it easier for the attacking magical beasts to reach the walls, with more and more of them surging upward.
The three-headed dragons truly shone, leaving no one in their path; wherever they went, corpses lay in abundance. As Rod had predicted, they were all at god-tier strength. Seeing god-tier power for the first time was truly eye-opening for Rod— a saint-level warrior appeared as weak as an ant in front of them, utterly helpless. Within just a few minutes, several saint-level warriors who tried to resist fell tragically at the feet of the dragons!
“Damn it!” Watching the dragons grow more and more rampant, unleashing havoc without restraint and causing a storm of bloodshed, Rod couldn’t help but curse. On his side, no one could withstand the attacks of those three beasts. If things continued like this, their defenses would soon be broken! By then, all their efforts would have been in vain.
Looking at the time, almost twenty minutes have passed. I wonder how well that guy from Nagran has prepared. All we can do now is hope he can arrive at the scene as soon as possible with what’s needed—perhaps only then can we stop the beasts’ attack and buy everyone some time to breathe.
“Kid, you take care of the east side; leave this to me! Hurry up!” A man in his fifties with a flushed face suddenly appeared behind Rod and shouted at him.
Rod was slightly stunned. Turning around, he saw that this man was actually a Saint-level warrior. The burly man was covered in blood, clearly having been in a fierce battle. Around him stood dozens of people tightly surrounding him, each with wounds of varying sizes. Yet despite their battered state, their determined eyes still showed their resolve and faith.
“Hurry up! The east side depends on you. I’ll take command here. We can’t let them break in today. If we hold on until then, reinforcements will arrive. The empire has sent a God-level warrior to help—believe it or not, they should be here in a few days.” Seeing the young man hesitating, the middle-aged man frowned and added.
Looking at this group again, it was clear the leader here was of high status—perhaps not inferior to Nagran at all. Now wasn’t the time to guess; the east side was indeed in grave danger. As for the west side, it seemed someone was already directing and supporting them, so it could hold for now. Looking at the central area where he stood, the green dragon had already reached the walls, ready to charge up. Rod had no confidence he could hold back such an attack. Seeing the determined look in the officer’s eyes, he had no choice but to place his hopes on him: “I leave this to you. Hold on until Nagran returns—everything will be fine then. As long as he comes back, I’m confident we can hold out for at least another day!”
Thinking of his plan, Rod took a deep breath, gave the officer detailed instructions in a low voice, then turned and ran toward the east. Standing behind him, the middle-aged man was stunned. Rod’s words made him wonder if he had any way to resolve this danger. With that thought, a glimmer of hope arose in him.
Upon reaching the east wall, the ice dragon was already close to the walls, relentlessly attacking them and the defenders. Along its path, aside from physical attacks, there were also magical assaults—ice arrows and biting cold winds turned this early summer night as cold as winter.
Many who were struck by magic instantly turned into ice lumps, lying motionless on the ground and losing their life force. The blood that had previously flowed like a small stream also froze at this moment, emitting a dark red glow under the moonlight as it spread out in all directions like a spider web—utterly eerie.
Standing at the front, Rod fought fiercely while making arrangements based on his judgment, hoping to hold off these creatures and buy more time. At the same time, he kept an eye on the situation behind him, hoping to spot Nagran’s figure.
At this moment, time seemed especially long and unbearable; every minute and second stretched endlessly, making each day feel like years.
Under the leadership of the dragon, the three city walls were under attack simultaneously. The most critical one was probably the eastern wall where Rod was located. Although the defenders here were the strongest among the three sides, the ice dragon’s terrifying offensive power and destructive strength made it the most formidable of the three dragons. Coupled with the attacks from powerful magical beasts such as earth bears, saber-tooth tigers, and thunder eagles, their defenses appeared the weakest.
Two imperial-grade and one quasi-saint-grade magical beast had already rushed onto the wall and started wreaking havoc, with more beasts frantically climbing up from below! The situation was extremely urgent. If those beasts reached the top, the consequences would be unimaginable. With their astonishing destructive power, no one could bring them under control again.
Another saber-tooth tiger rushed onto the wall. With its imperial-grade strength, its speed was beyond ordinary comparison. As soon as it reached the wall, it used its incredible speed to kill two defenders in one strike.
Seeing this, Rod’s eyes turned cold. He dashed forward through the air to attack the saber-tooth tiger.
With a faint red glow, he left a long trail behind him, charging forward with unstoppable momentum and a roaring fury, slashing straight at the tiger’s head.
In response to Rod’s attack, the saber-tooth tiger dodged skillfully by leaping to the side, avoiding his deadly strike.
With a cold snort, Rod ignored its evasion and pursued again, his moves sharp and fierce. During the time he spent with the man in black, he hadn’t learned much else, but his techniques had become even more concise and lethal—this trait came into play now.
Every move targeted the vital points, without any unnecessary actions or attacks, forcing the saber-toothed tiger to struggle desperately while remaining at a severe disadvantage. In less than a moment, Rod had left the saber-toothed tiger covered in wounds and screaming in pain, eventually killing it with a single move.
