Chapter 8: Testing the Guns (Part 2)
As soon as he finished speaking, everyone stared intently at the Spencer rifle in his hands.
Unfair! Completely unfair!
Holding a Spencer in his left hand and a Remington in his right, he tried to fool us with a Mini rifle.
Everyone grew envious.
Though there weren’t too few guns for too many people, with only sixteen Spencer rifles to go around among twenty people, who wouldn’t want such excellent guns?
Seeing the atmosphere grow tense, Liu Yu immediately laughed and said, “Jin Cheng, let’s test the Remington!”
“Amen!”
Everyone’s attention was immediately drawn to Liu Yu’s words. In Liu Yu’s camp, the 13-year-old Liu Yu was absolutely in charge!
He had already become the leader in their eyes.
The Remington rifle indeed lived up to its manly reputation—it was much thicker than the relatively slender Spencer rifle, and it used standard military rifle bullets.
After loading the bullet and pulling the trigger, both men’s shoulders shook violently this time—what a strong recoil!
They had thought that after seeing the rapid-fire power of the Spencer rifle, nothing else could impress them, but once firing started, they realized they were wrong!
So powerful! Truly powerful!
Liu Yu and Jin Cheng chose a large tree 200 meters away. This time, they would fire one shot and reload each time. But who said a single-shot rifle like the Remington was slow?
Well, it was Liu Yu who said so, and he did make sense. But even so, this “slowness” seemed a bit too fast.
Now everyone understood what this “slowness” meant. Liu Yu and Jin Cheng operated the rifles skillfully, firing a shot every ten seconds or so. After the thin plumes of smoke, everyone could smell the fierce killing intent in the air.
A shotgun could only fire one shot per minute, and even the Mini rifle, which Sima Tai always boasted about, could only fire two or three shots per minute. Yet this so-called “slow” Remington could fire at least six or seven shots per minute.
Incredibly fast! Incredibly fast!
After Liu Yu and Jin Cheng fired seven shots each, Jiang Ningxue rushed out to check the results.
This time, Sima Tai was even more shocked. Jin Cheng fired from 200 meters away and hit five out of seven targets. Even more terrifying was Liu Yu, who hit every single shot—all landing on that large tree, evenly spaced around its center.
Seeing the black holes in the tree, Sima Tai took another deep breath. The power was too strong—this was from 200 meters away!
200 meters away—how could it be so powerful? No wonder Liu Yu kept saying, “The pistol bullets used in Spencer rifles are less lethal!”
With such powerful rifle bullets, they could probably kill an ox from a kilometer away!
He struggled internally. Should he choose the faster Spencer or the more powerful Remington?
You can’t have your cake and eat it too!
As for his own Mini rifle, its firing rate was even slower than the Remington’s, and its power was weaker than the Spencer’s. He really was clueless.
Many others were equally torn, as both guns were extremely powerful.
Everyone whispered among themselves, struggling with their decisions: “Which one should we choose?”
Over there, Liu Yu had already smiled at Jiang Ningxue and handed over the Spencer in his hands, saying, “Hold this! I’ll handle the distribution from now on!” Everyone accepted Liu Yu’s authority. He pointed here and there, deciding who would get a Spencer and who would get a Remington: “Uncle Yi, your marksmanship is famously precise, so you must use this Remington!” “Jingshiyi, your marksmanship is average, so you can only use a Spencer!” Liu Yu personally handed the rifles to everyone. Seeing the smiling faces, he thought that with these new guns, the Liu Yu Camp could now stand tall. Thinking of the old shotguns he used before, he remembered the countless humiliations the team had suffered throughout history. Realizing how cautious he had been, he felt even more joy. Now, they could finally turn things around—they weren’t afraid even of foreigners. As for the Vietnamese government troops they had offended before, was that still a problem? Liu Yu handed a Spencer to a young man from his own clan, saying, “Suiyun, your marksmanship is good, but use a Spencer for now! I’ll teach you how to use it!” Liu Suiyun smiled, but tears streamed down uncontrollably, piling up more and more. Liu Yu said, “Don’t cry!” Liu Suiyun cried even harder, saying, “I’m thinking of my third uncle! If we had had so many foreign guns back then, my third uncle wouldn’t have…” With that, he burst into loud sobs, “Third uncle!” Wounds reopened at that moment, and the bloody scene by the riverbank was etched once again in Liu Yu’s heart. The merciless killings, the cold corpses, the cruel laughter, the fleeing civilians… and that moment when they helplessly lowered their guns. An emotion surged within him, preventing him from staying calm. Holding a Spencer in his hand, he could see the veins pulsing in the hand holding the gun. The members of the Liu Yu Camp also gripped their guns tightly. At this moment, there was no distinction between them—no difference in status—all sharing the same sentiment. Liu Yu almost uncontrollably shouted, “Why did we buy guns?” “For what?” His question shattered the silence. The situation was urgent, and the answer came from Liu Suiyun’s tearful face: “To kill foreigners!” “To kill foreigners!” It was Sima Tai’s voice. He too could feel his blood and soul pulsing: “To kill foreigners!” “To kill foreigners!” It was Jingshiyi’s still somewhat childish voice, but now he was by no means naive. He even added, “To kill the French!” “To kill foreigners!” “To kill the French!” “To kill the French!” Such voices rose one after another. No matter who they were, they were all so excited they couldn’t control themselves, shouting their thoughts into the sky and sea. Amidst these voices, only Lian Jincheng’s resigned voice could be heard: “Amen! The Lord is so merciful…” But he could only express his dissatisfaction in this way. He couldn’t understand them, but he knew the reason. They might have been down and out or had stains on their reputations, but what flowed in their veins was the blood of the Chinese. These sons of China always had roots—they couldn’t forget the long-term oppression they had suffered, nor the century-long humiliation of their homeland. They carried an indescribable courage within them. Even if there were thousands of foreign soldiers and warships with cannons, they would still face them alone!
The sounds from this riverbank will surely shake the world!
“Kill the foreigners!”
Liu Yu’s tears streamed down.
He lifted Spencer, pulled the trigger, and fired into the sky.
The gunshots were like thunder.
Seven shots in a row.
