Chapter 35: A Person’s Race, Section 3
The speed at which the light sphere approached was so fast that Black Hair didn’t even have time to dodge. Already constrained in this abnormal space, with his spacesuit providing only weak propulsion, how could he possibly avoid such a fierce impact? As the light sphere grew larger, Black Hair’s heart tightened, and he gritted his teeth. His left hand had already stretched out.
In such a situation where movement was restricted, he could only rely on his special genes. Black Hair resolved that once the opponent entered his attack range, he would use his swirling black threads to grab them and tear them to pieces. He believed that even if these creatures had strong bodies, they would surely not be a match for his black threads. Killing them would be a mere trivial task.
Of course, doing so would definitely draw the attention of other “angels.” Then, there would be no need to consider much else…
In the blink of an eye, the light sphere, like a meteor with a long tail, sliced through the thick darkness and arrived in front of Black Hair. To his surprise, it didn’t stop but continued to accelerate. Its trajectory wasn’t straight either, so it seemed impossible for it to hit him.
In a flash, Black Hair made a bold decision. He retracted his left hand and activated the weak propulsion of his spacesuit, moving several body lengths in an instant. Then he curled up tightly, using the surrounding darkness to hide himself silently.
“Huh!” A surge of energy waves passed by. The light sphere brushed past Black Hair with tremendous force, so close that it even reflected his silhouette. Fortunately, it was only for a moment. Soon, it vanished into the darkness like a falling meteor.
“Is this… a meteor?” Black Hair frowned and looked in the direction the light sphere disappeared. The pitch-black darkness covered everything—there wasn’t even a trace left. If it wasn’t a meteor, he really couldn’t think of any other explanation.
But if it was a meteor, it was all too simple. Did these creatures really have no emotions at all? As one of their companions disappeared, the other light spheres continued to float above the island, their ethereal songs never ceasing for a moment.
Shaking his head, the black-haired man dismissed these trivial thoughts and resumed his actions. After that brief moment, he had become much bolder and moved faster. After all, even when the glowing sphere passed by him earlier, it had revealed his shape, yet those “angels” still hadn’t noticed. This showed that these creatures’ vigilance was far from as high as he had imagined. If so, how could the black-haired man pass up such an opportunity?
Only those who have experienced it firsthand can understand what it’s like to drift aimlessly in space. That sense of being adrift without any direction is truly unbearable. Even someone like the black-haired man felt powerless and suffered greatly. It took thirty minutes before he successfully approached the island under the cover of darkness, arriving at a rock.
By this point, his surroundings had become even worse. The sky was filled with floating glowing spheres, each acting like a moving sentinel. He couldn’t afford to be careless. Moreover, unlike the external dimension, the island was illuminated by countless glowing spheres, making every detail visible. In such an environment, infiltrating undetected posed an extremely strict test.
But for the black-haired man, this was practically a child’s play. On Earth, such infiltration had long been routine. Not to mention after countless experiences today? He pressed a few buttons on his spacesuit, and the pitch-black suit began to vibrate slightly. Thirty seconds later, the darkness vanished completely, replaced by a light yellow color identical to that of the surrounding rocks.
Smiling faintly, the black-haired man crawled across the ground and slowly swam toward the center of the island. Sometimes he moved quickly, sometimes he paused, moving as nimbly as a fish in water. Yet whether moving or stopping, his figure remained hidden in the shadows of the surrounding rocks, thanks to the spacesuit’s special camouflage. Unless someone got close, they would never notice him. Despite the numerous “angels” in the sky above the island, they were truly like blind people, failing to detect the human figure slipping by right under their noses.
The island wasn’t large, only a few hundred kilometers in size. But that was from an observational perspective in space; diving in personally was another matter. Every meter required tremendous effort, and within just twenty minutes, sweat beads appeared on Blackhair’s forehead due to the intense stress. Yet his performance was truly remarkable—he managed to overcome the island’s perimeter in front of countless “angels” and reach the foot of the highest peak in the center. He found a huge rock to hide behind.
This rock was five meters tall, with a wide crack at the back that just fit Blackhair’s frame. There, he slowly sat down and took a deep breath. Now that he had passed the first obstacle, it was time to consider where the core lay.
Unlike usual, he was alone now while the enemy was numerous. The stark power disparity was enough to make any reckless person think twice. If Blackhair hadn’t developed a strong interest in these creatures, he wouldn’t have taken such risks. Moreover, Li Feng had lost his energy source and was trapped in this strange space. Without a target, Blackhair couldn’t leave either. It was truly a difficult situation.
Though the island wasn’t big, finding the core wasn’t easy either. When he dived in earlier, Blackhair had taken a close look. The entire island was actually a single mountain peak—a very simple one with just one summit. Based on his experience, there was only one place suitable for building a core in such an environment: the mountain’s interior!
Such a large mountain must have a sizable interior as well. Blackhair roughly estimated that even if only half of the mountain’s interior was hollowed out, its internal area would still be astonishing—over 200 kilometers. Such a vast space was more than enough to house a race’s core. The question then was how to enter the mountain’s interior.
Since it involved a race’s core secrets, Blackhair didn’t expect the enemy to leave the entrance open for him to enter. Moreover, with tens of thousands of “angels” floating outside, he couldn’t do anything drastic either. This greatly restricted his actions. He could only rely on his experience to make guesses.
As he pondered silently, Blackhair gently moved his limbs. The previous period of hiding had made his body stiff. Now that he had some free time, he couldn’t waste it. A series of cracking sounds came from the joints of his hands, and he felt much more relaxed. He slightly poked his head out, about to observe the terrain again, when suddenly something strange happened in the sky above the island.
In the thick darkness above the island, a spot of white light flickered and quickly spread, forming a huge halo. At the center of the halo, a dazzling beam of light descended straight down, shining precisely on the summit of the mountain. The beam was so thick that even by eye, Kurokami could estimate its diameter to be at least over 300 meters. The intense energy waves spread in all directions, causing spatial distortion; everything became blurred to the naked eye.
The countless “angels” in the sky above the island immediately became active. They came from all directions and danced around the beam of light. Their pure feathers drifted down, even carrying traces of white light—truly just like the paradise Kurokami had heard about!!
Faced with such a strange sight, even Kurokami was surprised. He opened his mouth slightly and stood there in shock for a while before revealing a faint wry smile.
“What an incredible miracle. This race is no ordinary one. It seems I really must find this core.”
The beam of light was very bright, its dazzling glow enveloping the entire island, like a pearl shining in the darkness. However, it didn’t last long. In less than five minutes, the beam’s size noticeably shrank, becoming thinner and thinner until it finally disappeared without a trace. Yet Kurokami knew it had achieved its purpose.
Energy!!
If Kurokami was right, the appearance of that beam was meant to supply energy to the island!! Those intense energy waves, almost tangible in nature, were undeniable. And under the rules of energy depletion in this alternate space, the fact that such waves were still present meant, to Kurokami, that the amount of energy involved was enormous. More importantly, after what had just happened, Kurokami had discovered extremely important information.
It was the way to enter the mountain’s interior!!
He noticed that the “angels” were the most active when the beam appeared. But once the beam vanished, they became much more lazy, not only lacking the activity they had when the beam was there but even falling short of their initial state. They flew lazily, like sloths who had eaten their fill and wanted to sleep. A few of the largest among them didn’t return to their original positions but instead circled before descending toward the center of the mountain, where there was a huge, mirror-like rock wall. Those large “angels” flew straight toward those rock walls.
The stone wall was quite large, covering hundreds of square meters. Hei Fa saw with his own eyes that when those “angels” approached the wall, ripples like on water’s surface appeared on it. After a slight disturbance, followed by a blur, those “angels” seemed to vanish into thin air, never to be seen again.
It’s right there!!
Excited, Hei Fa quickly organized his belongings, then placed his hands on the mountain peak and, like a gecko, slowly crawled toward that stone wall…
