Chapter 6: The Battle at the Valley Entrance (Part 1)
The four mutants were momentarily confused before recognizing the professionals in the squad. Their eyes turned blood red, showing extreme excitement. With a strange roar, they charged forward.
Guo Shier shouted, “Set up the talisman arrays! Uncle, you take charge of the squad’s attacks. Lord Qian, let’s work together!”
Qian Rongyao ordered, “I’ll handle two of them. You take care of one, and your squadron handles the last!” Instead of joining forces with Guo Shier, he gave direct commands.
Guo Shier hesitated none. “Alright!” he cried, already soaring into the air as his Moon Blade slashed at the mutant on the far right.
Qian Rongyao blocked off the two mutants on the left, while the one in the middle seized the opportunity to charge forward. He knew full well that the larger group behind them was the weakest, and the two in front were clearly formidable. So instead of helping his comrades, he headed straight for the squad led by Eagle Demon.
Guo Shier had complete trust in Eagle Demon. Even without the support of the squad’s talisman arrays, he could fight off a mutant. He might not be able to kill them, but he certainly wouldn’t be in danger. Moreover, he had the talisman arrays of three other squads behind him—two for defense and one to assist with attacks.
The Moon Blade transformed into a red streak and flew toward the mutant. The mutant sneered, flipped his wrist, and a huge bone shield appeared in his hand. He moved at incredible speed, striding toward Guo Shier like an elephant charging forward.
The mutant’s stature exuded pressure, especially when charging at full speed. With each step, he crushed bones on the ground, sending up clouds of fine bone dust that formed a pale mist as he rushed forward with a thunderous noise.
In the blink of an eye, the Moon Blade struck the bone shield. Guo Shier wanted to test its power, so he went all out from the start. Since his promotion, the quality of the Moon Blade had improved significantly. He wasn’t sure just how much it had changed, so by using his full strength, he aimed to determine its limits.
The Moon Blade sliced through silently, as if a hot knife cutting through butter, instantly splitting the mutant in two. The huge bone shield couldn’t stop it even slightly. The mutant was killed in an instant, leaving even Guo Shier stunned.
After a second of shock, Guo Shier was overjoyed. The power of the Moon Blade had not only doubled but had increased by at least three times. It was sharper, faster, and easier to control. He cast a spell, and the Moon Blade turned to slash at another mutant.
Qian Rongyao found it extremely difficult to deal with the two mutants. Although he had inherited the legacy of the Gu Xilong family, it was only a basic inheritance—unlike Guo Shier, who had received the complete legacy of the Gu Fuzhou family, so their strengths naturally differed greatly.
The combined attack from the two mutants left him in a flurry. Especially the bone clubs commonly used by the mutants were terrifying; if one couldn’t block them, they would be instantly killed. He kept teleporting in an attempt to buy time. As soon as he teleported out, a red flash appeared before his eyes, and he saw one of the mutants’ huge heads flying apart, along with the thick bone club breaking in half.
Before Qian Rongyao could react, another red flash appeared. This time he saw clearly—it was Guo Shier’s life essence sword, which effortlessly split the other mutant in two from shoulder to back.
In the blink of an eye, Guo Shier had killed three mutants in a row.
Qian Rongyao was stunned. By then, the Eagle Demon had also won, slaying the last mutant with a single strike, and the entire squadron erupted in loud cheers.
Guo Shier immediately began collecting soul beads. Qian Rongyao smiled bitterly. It was only now that he realized just how strong Guo Shier really was.
After collecting four soul beads, Guo Shier discarded his red-eyed pupils and gave them to others. Qian Rongyao shook his head and said, “Shier, you’ve advanced to Great Sage Master, but you still haven’t received any inheritance. How can you be so powerful?”
Guo Shier couldn’t tell him that he had received the complete legacy of the Gu Miluo family. He smiled and said, “I have good character!”
Qian Rongyao rolled his eyes—this excuse was utterly ridiculous. He said, “Alright, let’s keep moving forward!”
Guo Shier replied, “Lord Qian, don’t rush to leave. More are coming!”
With just a glance, Qian Rongyao was terrified and shouted, “Damn it… so many! Run!” His immediate reaction was to flee, which made Guo Shier laugh and sigh. It was understandable—he had seen countless professionals die in the Bone-Shattering Gorge over the years, so it had become a reflex for him.
Guo Shier said sternly, “Running now… is absolutely impossible!”
If they ran, everything would fall apart. Once the magic array dispersed, these members would have no chance of survival. Fighting might give them a slim chance of survival, but running was out of the question. Guo Shier knew this very well—when an army collapses, it’s unstoppable. Even if he were strong, he couldn’t save many people once the team dispersed.
In an instant, more than a dozen mutants appeared out of nowhere. Guo Shier asked, “Has the signaling talisman been sent?”
At this moment, Qian Rongyao felt as if he were the squadron leader, with Guo Shier being the platoon leader. Desperately, he said, “There’s no time to run…” Then he shouted, “Form up in formation! Arrange the talisman arrays! Anyone who dares to move will not be spared! Get ready to fight to the death!”
Guo Shier also shouted, “The left and right squadrons, gather quickly and form a defensive talisman array! The Tenth Squadron, form an offensive talisman array! Get ready for battle!” His orders were more specific, and each squadron took action upon hearing them. By the time the dozen or so mutated creatures charged at them, the three talisman arrays had already been formed.
The charge of those mutated creatures was like that of an army of thousands; their momentum was terrifying. Many team members started to tremble, but after all, they were professionals. Under the commands of their squad leaders, they were still able to perform their duties. The two defensive talisman arrays were quickly activated.
Qian Rongyao ordered, “Retreat behind the defensive talisman arrays!”
Guo Shier also felt a chill run down his spine. Although he had slain three enemies with his moonblade, if those mutated creatures united their forces, who knew if he could still kill them easily. Hearing Qian Rongyao’s command, he immediately retreated.
Bang! Bang! Bang…
The dozen or so mutated creatures collided repeatedly with the defensive talisman arrays, and the pressure was borne by the professionals who had formed the arrays. The advantage of talisman arrays was that they allowed collective strength—there were nearly a thousand people in the three squadrons, with nearly seven hundred focusing on the defensive arrays. With such a large number working together to resist, the immense force was distributed among them, making it impossible to break through the defense.
The mutated creatures stopped advancing. At that moment, the Tenth Squadron led by Eagle Demon came into action. All the power of the talisman array was channeled into Eagle Demon’s body. He raised his life talisman sword high, which suddenly transformed into a giant blade over ten meters long, then swung down with a thunderous crash.
The first target was a tall mutated creature—over five meters tall, clad in armor, wielding a huge bone club that was thinner at the bottom and thicker at the top, like a giant mace. It roared as it faced the descending blade.
Boom!
It was unknown what kind of mutated beast’s bone that mace was made from, but it managed to block Eagle Demon’s strike, which had gathered the power of the entire talisman array behind him. Yet, the immense pressure still fell entirely on it, forcing its legs to sink deep into the ground like nails. The mutated creature’s body was extremely strong; it roared as it swung its bone club, ready to withstand the second strike.
Another loud explosion occurred as the mutated creature was buried deep in the ground, with broken bones reaching up to his waist. The Eagle Demon hadn’t expected that two slashes wouldn’t suffice, and his anger surged. Shouting, “Die!” he poured all his strength into his sword, along with the power from the talisman array behind him, channeling it into his life talisman sword. Suddenly, the massive blade grew to nearly twenty meters long, emitting a sharp sound as it sliced through the air.
Three consecutive slashes, with the last one requiring every ounce of his strength. The mutated creature screamed in despair.
Seeing the situation worsening, another mutated creature roared and rushed forward with a huge bone shield, trying to block the attack. The final slash struck the bone shield with a thunderous impact.
Boom! Crack!
The bone shield shattered instantly, and the blade then severed the head of the mutated creature. The one buried in the ground behind him, with eyes red with fury, rushed out of the ground, swinging his bone staff wildly. It crashed against the life talisman sword with a loud noise, sending a massive force that made the Eagle Demon spit out blood and stagger backward.
The mutated creature seemed insane—he leaped high, swung his bone staff behind his head, with runes glowing across his body. The staff flipped around, accompanied by the sound of wind and thunder, and was hurled at the Eagle Demon.
The Eagle Demon couldn’t retreat, as the professionals from the Tenth Squad were right behind him.
Guo Shier had already killed two mutated creatures with his Moon Blade. Seeing the Eagle Demon in danger, he transformed his blade into a fish and thrust it at him from the side.
In addition to his life talisman sword, the Eagle Demon also deployed his life talisman shield, realizing that his sword alone wasn’t enough to withstand the bone staff.
Boom! Boom!
His life talisman sword was shattered instantly, followed by the bone staff hitting the talisman shield, forcing the Eagle Demon to spit out more blood. Yet, he was puzzled—this attack wasn’t as powerful as he had expected. The mutated creature slowly collapsed.
The Moon Blade passed through the left side of its head, leaving a hole the size of a washbasin. The Eagle Demon knew it was Guo Shier coming to his aid.
Qian Rongyao was also in trouble. Attacked by three mutated creatures, he struggled greatly. After fighting back a few times and spitting out blood, he could only keep using teleportation to evade them. Although teleportation was limited in this area, as a Great Sage, he could still use it to barely hold his own.
Relying on the power of the Moon Blade, Guo Shieru fought back fiercely against the four mutants, even launching a surprise attack on the one battling the Eagle Demon. The Moon Blade’s relentless strikes caused the mutants great pain; whether it was bone clubs or bone shields, once struck by it, there was only one outcome—broken clubs and shattered shields.
The remaining mutants launched a fierce attack on the two defensive talismans, swinging their huge bone clubs wildly. But it wasn’t easy to break through talismans formed by so many people working together, especially since key areas of the talismans were guarded by two people at a time—if one couldn’t hold out, the other would step in to take their place.
In just a few moments, Guo Shieru’s Moon Blade had slain three mutants, including the one he had attacked successfully. The Eagle Demon had also killed one. Seeing their four companions dead, the remaining mutants suddenly charged at Guo Shieru all at once. He posed too great a threat, and they seemed determined to focus their efforts on killing him first to eliminate this enormous danger.
