Chapter 9: The Great Golden Armor Shield (Part 1)
Guo Shier replied, “There’s nothing particularly special about it. Its crafting method is even simpler than today’s. However, the biggest advantage of the ancient method is its reliance on top-quality materials. For example, the Great Golden Armor obtained this time comes from a Level 13 mutated sigil worm, and the materials from such worms are suitable for using the ancient method.”
Eagle Demon and Luo Zhan sat nearby, full of anticipation, watching Guo Shier craft the sigil shield.
He took out the hard wings of the Great Golden Armor again. These wings resembled enlarged petals, with an arc-shaped surface. Due to their enormous size, it was necessary to use sigil fire to remove impurities, add other materials, and repair the runes on them.
Guo Shier casually arranged a tiny sigil array to assist in crafting the shield, then released his life sigil sphere. He needed to utilize the sigil array on the sphere, as it contained abundant sigil fire. By connecting this array to the smaller sigil arrays on the ground, he gained control over fire beyond his own capabilities, which was extremely beneficial for crafting the shield—especially for those hard wings, as purple sigil fire was essential to remove their impurities.
He placed the hard wings into the sigil array and cast a spell. The seven-layer sigil array on his life sigil sphere began to spin rapidly. Waves of tiny flames spread along channels formed by virtual sigils to the ground. With a loud roar, a massive purple flame erupted, lifting the wings and suspending them above the sigil array.
The flames made a gentle roaring sound as the wings slowly rotated under the influence of the sigil array. Luo Zhan couldn’t help but step back a few times. A heat wave hit him, causing his hair to curl, and he seemed to smell a faint burnt odor. He murmured, “This fire… is truly powerful!”
With slight crackling sounds, the wings began to shrink gradually. Guo Shier occasionally threw in one or two materials, controlling them with virtual sigils to attach them to the wings. As the temperature rose, these materials melted and seeped into the wings.
Impurities were burned away bit by bit, and the wings shrank slowly, at a rate visible to the naked eye.
A day later, as sigil spirit stones were added, the wings shrank faster until they reached about two meters in length before stopping. Guo Shier then began repairing the runes on them.
This step wasn’t too difficult. Since the damaged runes hadn’t completely disappeared, the new virtual sigils quickly merged with them, restoring the original runes. Although they weren’t perfect, they could still fulfill the functions of the runes.
Guo Shier didn’t change the original shape of the hard-wing shield; it remained as it was, with only the color changed to deep red, adorned with light golden runes. Gritting his teeth, he infused a golden rune flame—flame second only to the purple rune flame—which greatly enhanced the shield’s power.
Luo Zhan watched eagerly and asked in a low voice, “Eagle, such a shield must be incredibly powerful, right?”
The Eagle Demon replied, “If mastered well, even a great sage might not be able to break through its defense. What do you think?”
Luo Zhan exclaimed, “That’s amazing…”
Only after Guo Shier finished crafting two shields and handed them to the Eagle Demon and Luo Zhan did Luo Zhan realize he couldn’t use them. These were shields made using ancient methods, and Luo Zhan only possessed the strength of aFrenzied Master. Moreover, without inheriting the legacy of the Ancient Soul Altar, he couldn’t use these shields. Disappointed, he returned them to Guo Shier.
After thinking for a moment, Guo Shier said, “Uncle Eagle Demon, let me make some modifications so you can use both shields. That way, it will be more complete.”
He made further adjustments, connecting the two shields together to form two dark red shields the size of a palm each. Guo Shier said, “Alright, Uncle Eagle Demon, just wear them… um, place them on your arms.”
The Eagle Demon slapped one of the shields firmly and implanted it in his left arm, then did the same with the other in his right arm. Smiling, he said, “This is the first rune artifact I’ve ever had made using ancient methods. I can use it smoothly. Heh, I plan to combine it with my core shield to create an ancient shield, which will have even greater defensive power.”
Guo Shier said excitedly, “Uncle Eagle Demon, release it so I can try… um, let’s go to a place farther away to avoid damaging the shield house.” The three flew along the riverbank for a while before stopping.
The Eagle Demon said, “Let’s try it here. However, since the shields were just implanted and haven’t fully merged with the runes on my body, their power can only be utilized at half strength right now.”
Guo Shier said, “Half strength is half strength. Let me try swinging my sword!” Impatiently, he released his sword rune. A golden thread shot out, with a hint of red light within it. Since the sword rune had become his core sword, its power hadn’t increased much, but it was much easier to control. With just a thought, he could launch an attack, and its speed was extremely fast.
The Eagle Demon also wanted to see how powerful these two talismanic shields were. With a wave of his arms, palm-sized shield symbols immediately flew out and circled around him at his command. In just one second, a defensive formation was established. Again, it was two palm-sized shield symbols—one in front and one behind. Whether the Eagle Demon moved or stayed still, these shields hovered in front of and behind him, and they were hard to notice if one wasn’t paying attention.
Guo Shier said, “Be careful!”
The golden thread suddenly transformed into a huge golden sword, slashing down from the sky with a fierce roar. Luo Zhan’s expression changed drastically. He knew Guo Shier wouldn’t kill the Eagle Demon, but such a violent strike still looked terrifying.
The Eagle Demon remained motionless, staring intently at the falling sword. Just as the sword was about to hit his head, the shield in front of him suddenly activated, turning into a massive shield engulfed in raging flames to meet the incoming blade.
Boom!
Guo Shier felt a heat in his chest and instinctively stepped back repeatedly. The blade formed from his life sword talisman shattered instantly. He quickly cast several spells to re-form the sword talisman. But this move cost him dearly.
Luo Zhan cheered, “Amazing!”
Realizing he couldn’t continue using his life sword talisman, Guo Shier immediately switched to the Giant Axe talisman and shouted, “Uncle Eagle Demon, don’t relax! Let me keep… slashing!”
The Giant Axe swung down. The Eagle Demon trembled inwardly—the axe blade was enormous, seven or eight meters long, appearing almost solid. Gritting his teeth, he roared, “Perfect! Get out of the way!”
The shield suddenly expanded and rushed toward the axe blade. Boom! With a loud explosion, the impact force this time was immense. Although most of it was absorbed by the shield, the Eagle Demon’s feet still sank deep into the ground.
Guo Shier exclaimed happily, “Great shield! Again! Sweep!”
The Giant Axe blade swept across. The Eagle Demon shouted, “Rotate!” The two shield symbols spun rapidly like wheels and expanded, colliding with the sweeping axe blade and producing a series of loud bangs. Guo Shier said cheerfully, “Flying wheels!”
Guo Shier had a total of seven spells, meaning seven attacks. He had long wanted to see how powerful they were. Unexpecting the newly crafted shields to be so formidable, he couldn’t resist using all seven attacks.
Luo Zhan had already retreated far away, staring in astonishment. He never imagined the two of them to be so powerful.
Guo Shier was overjoyed. He used strikes, sweeps, spinning attacks, trapping circles, counterattacks, mountain-pressure techniques, and countless blades in succession—repeating them several times yet still unable to break through the Eagle Demon’s defense. However, the Eagle Demon already felt overwhelmed; even its talismanic shield couldn’t withstand that shaking force. It knew it must merge with the talismanic shield as soon as possible, for only then would Guo Shier’s Giant Axe Talisman pose no threat to it.
The two stopped fighting. The Eagle Demon smiled and said, “Great stuff! Let’s stay another day so I can fully merge the two talismanic shields. With these two, I can ensure the safety of all three of us.”
Guo Shier said, “It seems that besides being strong oneself, good talismans and spells are also very important… To challenge those above one’s level, these are essential.”
Luo Zhan said with a bitter smile, “Where are good talismans and spells so easily obtained? But Shier, you and the Eagle are already advanced professionals. Even without powerful talismans or spells, you don’t need to worry.” His experience was limited—he had yet to meet truly formidable experts.
Guo Shier said, “Uncle Luo, we still fall short. The more we see… the more fearful we become. There are still many things in this world we don’t know. Staying at the Northern Talisman Gate might… be a form of happiness.”
The Eagle Demon said calmly, “It’s fine not to have seen them, but once you do, you’ll never want to return to the Northern Talisman Gate.” It gently placed the two talismanic shields on its arms. Finally having suitable talismans—though defensive rather than offensive—it was quite satisfied.
Luo Zhan said with a bitter smile, “I don’t even want to think about talismans. All I want is to inherit something—a legacy from a Talismanic Martial Master!” Although his strength had reached that of a master, even an intermediate one, he only possessed the combat skills of a master. Just like Guo Shier and the others in the Bloody Secret Realm, they had advanced in rank but not in actual combat ability.
Back at the Talisman House, Guo Shier specially gave the room upstairs to the Eagle Demon to use. It needed a quiet environment to combine its life talismanic shield with the newly crafted ones in order to fully control them. The Eagle Demon named these two shields the Great Golden Armor Shield.
Guo Shier and Luo Zhan sat on the grass outside the Talisman House, chatting casually.
Luo Zhan lay on his back on the soft grass and said, “Shier, what about those four kids—Huo Bao and the others? What will happen to them in the future? Only by coming with you this time did I realize that the advanced continents and secret realms are far more dangerous than the trials at our Northern Talisman Gate. It will be hard for them to keep up with you…”
Guo Shier also said worriedly, “Yes, I can’t take them out. Neither the Advanced Continent nor the secret realms we visit are places they can enter.”
Luo Zhan sighed. He understood that if it weren’t for this promotion, he wouldn’t be able to follow Guo Shier again after returning. Fortunately, now that he had reached the rank of Mad Master, as long as he received the inheritance, he wouldn’t be a burden and could at least contribute a little, which would be very important in helping Guo Shier.
Guo Shier said, “Let’s talk about it another time. If one day…” He didn’t continue, only shaking his head with a bitter smile, thinking, “If one day I can reach the strength of the Red Robed Man, then I’ll be able to take Huo Bao and the others out.” By then, he would have absolute confidence in helping the four of them improve their strength. But not yet—he could hardly even ensure his own safety.
Luo Zhan looked up at the sky and asked, “If one day? What do you mean?”
