Chapter 50: The Narcissist
“Damn it, I’m finally out of that place!”
After leaving the group far behind, Bit finally breathed a sigh of relief and complained.
“Hey, Rod, how’s it going? What’s your first experience joining our mercenary team on a mission like?”
He then turned to Rod and asked with a half-smile.
Looking at the sky, night was approaching. Hearing Bit’s words, Rod gave a faint wry smile. To be honest, he wasn’t quite sure how to describe his feelings—only that it was boring.
Turning to Bit, a man around his own age with a thin build that seemed ready to be blown away by the wind, Rod noticed his light yellow short hair fluttering in the cool breeze. He had thick eyebrows, big eyes, a protruding nose, and a large mouth. Especially when smiling, he didn’t need to speak—just standing there was enough to make people want to laugh. If one didn’t know his identity, it would be hard to imagine such a person could be a high-level warrior and a key combat member.
“It’s stuffy. Heh, those people are cold, and the atmosphere is terrible. I don’t like it. Damn it, I’d rather take on some dangerous missions!”
After hesitating for a moment, Rod managed to come up with such thoughts. Indeed, it seemed difficult to describe this feeling.
“You’ll get used to it. Just take your time. We’ve encountered many such missions before. It’s just that this time, it’s particularly dull because of the opponent’s status. Ugh, pitiful! Thinking of someone as handsome and charming as me, loved by everyone, who makes girls fall in love at first sight, ending up in this situation… Damn those Dark Legion members!”
With an understanding look, he smiled slightly before Bit tilted his head back, admiring himself with a narcissistic expression while complaining.
“Cough, cough, cough…” Hearing his words, Rod almost choked on his own saliva. Could such a person really be considered lovable? It seemed a bit much. He hadn’t realized this guy was a complete narcissist.
“What’s wrong, Rod? Do you think I’m handsome too? Hehe, of course. It’s a shame that so far no beautiful woman has recognized my heroism. Hmph, it’s only their lack of taste.”
But this time, it seems the person in that carriage is a young lady from a noble family. I wonder if he’ll lack the taste to recognize such beauties. Maybe with my super amazing charm, I can actually get her to throw herself at me. Yeah, that’s definitely possible, haha… Rod, I won’t forget my brothers then. Of course, there won’t be any shortage of money and women for you guys, haha. You’re lucky, kid—meeting such good fortune right after joining the mercenary group. You should make the most of it.
Seeing Rod’s expression, completely unaware of his own absurdity, Bit continued to indulge in his endless narcissism, fantasizing about his future and imagining a wonderful life, almost drooling with delight.
Rod rolled his eyes in exasperation. He truly admired how shameless such a person could be. With a sigh, he shook his head helplessly at the guy and said, “Let’s hope so! But even if that’s the case, we need to get our proper work done first! You, Lord Bit, had better hurry up. Otherwise, if we don’t finish the job well, you’ll end up in trouble. No matter how handsome you are, that skin won’t save you!”
“Yeah, right. We must do our best. Who knows, maybe by then we’ll still be family!”
Upon hearing Rod’s words, Bit seemed to remember the task they needed to accomplish. He patted his head and gave an awkward smile before saying to Rod, “Yeah, I almost forgot about it. Hehe, I can’t let my future wife get angry. Come on, let’s hurry!”
They spurred their horses and galloped away. Rod rolled his eyes inwardly. This guy really took shamelessness to its extreme, even starting to say such outrageous things at this moment.
“You’d better watch what you say. If those people hear you talking like that, hehe, I think you know very well what will happen!” Rod said bluntly, taking a moment to reprimand him.
“Damn it, I get it. Seriously, can’t I even have some imagination? You have no sense of fun at all!”
After Rod’s words, Bit deflated instantly, complaining unhappily.
“Hey, by the way, Rod, did you sleep well last night? Hehe, did anything happen?”
As if thinking of something, Bit’s eyes shifted, and he asked Rod with a funny smile that was downright unbearable. It made Rod want to beat him up.
“I slept very well. What could possibly be the problem? What’s wrong?” Rod, unable to bear that look, touched his face and asked in confusion.
“Hm? Nothing unusual at all? Like being hit while sleeping, or thrown out of bed, or seeing someone sleepwalking?” He paused for a moment, then slowed down slightly, moving closer to Rod and asking in a probing tone.
“No, I slept soundly after drinking yesterday. Hmm, is there a problem? Did you encounter something?” Rod took a deep breath, utterly puzzled by Bit’s sudden question.
“Hey, you’re really hopeless. Damn it, everything has to be explained so clearly. I really don’t know what’s wrong with you. It seems there are few people like me in this world! Maybe this is what it’s like to be at the top—cold and isolated. Well, I’ll explain it simply: it’s Ada. Haven’t you noticed anything strange about her? Did nothing unusual happen last night while you were sleeping?” Bit said gloomily, showing off again.
“Cough, cough… It seems there aren’t many as ‘smart’ as you. Ada is fine, nothing wrong. I slept well. Hmm, what’s the matter? Does she seem strange somehow?” Rod asked, frowning in confusion after a wry smile.
“Hehe, it’s best if there’s nothing. No, how could there be any problem? You’ll know when the time comes!” Bit gave Rod a strange look, as if holding back something, and said mysteriously with a shaky smile.
Rod frowned at this narcissist. “Ada? What could be wrong with her? She’s fine, right? Well, she does seem a bit effeminate. Damn it, could she really be a rabbit?” After thinking carefully, Rod’s expression suddenly changed. Seeming to have realized something, he rushed toward Bit, almost knocking him over. Amidst Bit’s complaints, Rod hurriedly asked, “Cough, cough… Um, Bit, I think there’s something wrong with Ada. Could this guy be a rabbit from Backback Mountain?”
“A rabbit from Backback Mountain? What’s that?”
“Cough, cough… I mean… you know… those with such preferences. Get it?” After an awkward cough, Rod realized that people in this world really didn’t know what “rabbit from Backback Mountain” meant, so he had to explain it vaguely with a pained expression.
“Hahaha… You kid, well, it’s not that bad, hehe. But that guy, Aida, is indeed a bit strange. We’re not exactly sure what’s going on, but none of those who used to live with him managed to stay longer than five days. Otherwise, do you think people would refuse to stay in such nice rooms? Hehe, Captain Bruce is really good to you. Don’t worry; you’ll understand what’s going on in no time, haha… There’s no danger. If anything happens, just call on me, the wise and mighty, for help, hehe…”
With a wry smile after understanding, Bit spoke in a mysterious tone. That mischievous grin only made Rod feel even more puzzled, as if Aida had some well-known secret within the mercenary group.
“Enough talking! Hmph, I’ll find out! Let’s go quickly, or we’ll really be late!”
After muttering in frustration, Rod urged Bit on. The two rushed toward Water Moon City.
After passing through a vast wheat field, a huge city wall finally appeared ahead—Water Moon City. It might not be a large town in the empire, but it was certainly well-known, famous for its tourism. It welcomed visitors from all directions every day, especially in winter when it reached its peak season. Having heard about it before, Rod was impressed by the massive city wall. It seemed that all the towns he had seen so far were much larger than Fire City. It made him wonder whether his horizons had broadened or if Fire City had shrunk.
With a wry smile, he spurred his horse to speed toward the city.
Upon entering Water Moon City, the night scene was bustling. Unlike Blue Ice City, where the hustle and bustle came from merchants, here it was the tourists. There weren’t many stalls or small shops on the streets; the stores were generally large, with tourists as the main focus. The streets were crowded with tourists, and the shops were also packed. Seeing such a lively scene, Rod felt embarrassed.
“Rod, what are you staring at? Go do your job. There will be plenty to see later!”
Rod, who had been lost in thought, felt someone pull him. He then heard Bit urging him. With a wry smile, he reluctantly dismounted and led his horse forward, following Bit’s familiar guidance.
