Chapter 016: The Ghost King
“Then let me give it a try first,” Du Fan said.
Du Fan had his reasons for saying this. If this magic didn’t work on these ghosts, then with his absolute defense barrier, those ghosts wouldn’t be able to harm him either. Thus, he chose to be the first to try it.
“Very well, Elder Du Fan, please get ready!” the magician said. “And please remember, after the magic is cast, do not move. Only in this way can we achieve the best results.”
“I understand. Go ahead and cast the spell,” Du Fan said.
The crowd surrounded Du Fan and the magician in a circle. Inside, the magician cast a dark magic spell that concealed his presence, allowing him to do so without interference from the outside. A faint black mist enveloped Du Fan, making his aura seem almost imperceptible to everyone.
It wasn’t that the magician’s spell was ineffective—it was simply that these people had extremely high cultivation levels. Moreover, knowing that Du Fan was under a spell hiding his aura, they deliberately tried to sense his presence, making his aura appear faint to them.
But those ghosts did not possess such high cultivation levels.
“The spell is cast. Everyone, step back slowly and leave Elder Du Fan alone facing the ghosts. Let’s see if they will attack him,” the magician said.
Hearing this, the people gradually stepped back while continuing to fight. Sure enough, the ghosts treated Du Fan as nothing at all, ignoring him completely and charging straight at the eleven people. Seeing this worked, the others followed suit!
Soon, on that vine-covered plain, eleven people stood like wooden pillars. The last magician first cast a protective barrier spell on himself. Before that barrier was broken, he cast another spell to conceal his presence. Even before the barrier was shattered, the ghosts began to retreat slowly.
In the end, under the night sky, the scene returned to one of bright moonlight and a gentle breeze. Strangely, amidst the bones scattered across the ground, there was a patch of green land, on which twelve people stood motionless!
With a thought, Du Fan created a silence barrier around them.
“We’re not going to stand like this until the sun rises, are we?” Du Fan said.
After setting up a silent barrier, there was no need to worry about ghosts hearing and suddenly appearing.
“Do you have any better method?” Bashah quickly asked upon hearing Du Fan speak.
Dwarves like Bashah also found it hard to endure loneliness; standing motionless until the sun rose was extremely difficult for him.
“I’ll try sitting down first,” Du Fan said.
After saying that, Du Fan slowly sat down on the vine ground. This extremely simple process actually took him two minutes.
Fortunately, no ghosts appeared during the time Du Fan spent sitting down. It seemed the ghosts didn’t react to such subtle movements.
As Du Fan sat down, the others followed his example and slowly sat as well.
Sitting was more comfortable than standing.
One by one, they bent over, crouched down, and slowly crossed their legs, sitting quietly on the vine ground.
The twelve of them sat quietly on the Bone Mountain. Although sitting wasn’t very comfortable, it was far better than constantly fighting those ghosts.
Just as they were sitting peacefully, a fire meteor suddenly appeared in the sky and rushed toward them!
That meteor was more than ten times larger than the starfall used by the Naixiu elves!
Seeing the meteor falling rapidly, the twelve experts at the Saint level and above quickly tried to dodge everywhere!
With a loud crash, the meteor struck the Bone Mountain where they had just been sitting, turning it into powder in an instant!
White bone dust rose like a white mushroom cloud.
The air around them was filled with the smell of burnt bones.
“Who dares disturb the slumber of these fallen heroes?” a deep male voice said.
The twelve people, including Du Fan, who had scattered, quickly gathered back together.
“Who are you? How dare you attack us in secret?” Bashah didn’t answer the question about who they were but instead retorted.
“Who am I? Who am I?” The voice murmured upon hearing Bashah’s question.
“Right, who are you?” Du Fan pressed further.
“Who am I? Who am I?” The voice seemed genuinely unaware of itself, asking repeatedly.
“I’m Andrew! I’m Karosi! Who am I? I’m nobody! I’m just myself!” The voice suddenly shouted loudly.
“I was born from the will of these heroic spirits! I am the most powerful ghost between heaven and earth! I am who I am!” the voice roared loudly.
As this voice shouted, ghosts began to appear in huge numbers around them, rushing toward Du Fan and the others.
With the reappearance of these ghosts, a man dressed in black and red robes suddenly appeared in the air. His entire being seemed to be constantly changing, making it impossible to tell whether he was imaginary or truly real.
“You beings who have disturbed my rest—prepare to stay and keep me company,” the man said right away upon appearing.
The ghosts rushing toward Du Fan and his group all stopped in their tracks. Then, the man in the air raised his hand, creating a vortex with immense attraction!
The ghosts on the ground flocked toward his hand!
“Ghost King! This man is a Ghost King!” an elf mage shouted.
“A Ghost King? How powerful is he?” Du Fan frowned and asked quickly.
Characters with the title of “King” are never ordinary. Hearing the term “Ghost King,” Du Fan knew he had encountered a powerful opponent!
“A Ghost King! Such beings can only arise in places filled with countless ghosts! Usually, it’s already difficult to create just one or two ghosts. After all, there aren’t many people who die with such strong obsessions! So the conditions for a Ghost King to appear are extremely difficult!” the mage explained.
“I’m asking, just how powerful is this Ghost King?” Du Fan reiterated his question.
“With such stringent conditions for emergence, the strength of a Ghost King must be incredibly great. There’s a standard: ghosts are born from obsessions, but a Ghost King’s obsession is even more intense, beyond belief! With such a strong obsession, as soon as a Ghost King appears, he already possesses a domain. In other words, a Ghost King is at least a domain master!” the mage said.
A domain master—a domain master above the sacred realm!
Not even having entered the Divine Ruins yet, not even seeing the full extent of the distant green mountains, and after encountering only eight level-nine skeletons, now there appeared a domain master right away!
Faced with a domain expert, Du Fan wasn’t too worried. After all, he had already faced a god before—so a domain expert wasn’t something to concern him. What worried Du Fan was what kind of opponents he would encounter in the battles to come. Since domain experts already existed now, it was highly likely that there were gods in the Remains of the Gods as well! The King of Ghosts continued to absorb ghosts, which were then transformed into a long black sword in his hands. Soon, all the ghosts were absorbed, and a complete black sword appeared in his hands, emitting a destructive aura—facing this sword felt like facing an entire army! It gave the impression that anything would be shattered beneath it. With the sword now formed, the King of Ghosts examined it intently with a determined gaze. With a twist of his wrist, he drew several simple slashes through the air, instantly filling the space with a warlike atmosphere. The power of this sword was already at such an extreme level! “Let’s call this sword the Sword of War,” the King of Ghosts said to the sword he had created from the ghosts, his eyes filled with intense emotion. “Amazing, truly amazing,” Du Fan exclaimed. In just a short while, the King of Ghosts had forged an extraordinary sword! “It’s not that hard,” said the magician beside Du Fan. “Wherever the King of Ghosts appears, there are countless ghosts. These ordinary ghosts are merely stepping stones for him. The King of Ghosts has the ability to use these ghosts at will. Some choose to devour the ordinary ghosts that arise alongside them to enhance their power, while others refine them into remarkable weapons or artifacts.” The magician explained. The ability to manipulate ghosts at will was also one of the King of Ghosts’ innate skills—though there was a prerequisite: the ghosts had to be those from his birthplace. Such ghosts shared the same obsession as the King of Ghosts, so they wouldn’t resist when refined or devoured. “I am Andrew! Oh no, I am Karosis!” said the King of Ghosts. “Are you Andrew or Karosis?” Du Fan asked loudly.
“I am Andrew! No, I am Carosy!” The Ghost King suddenly cried out in contradiction!
“I am who I am—I am the Ghost King! I am the most powerful ghost in this world!” The Ghost King’s mindset suddenly changed again!
“Everything that’s happened in the past is gone! I, the Ghost King, the most powerful ghost in the world!” said the Ghost King.
“I inherit those persistent thoughts! All these lives before me shall be slain by my sword!” the Ghost King shouted loudly.
“I’ll go meet the Ghost King first,” said Moses, drawing his two-handed sword and charging forward.
As the strongest magic warrior among the elves, Moses had a strong fighting spirit, but it was suppressed by the peace-loving elves in his tribe. This time, following Du Fan, he first tried to slay a dragon—but Du Fan got there first and killed it, leaving Moses’ desire for battle unfulfilled. Now, facing a powerful being in this realm, Moses finally felt he could have a proper fight. He immediately drew his two-handed sword and charged at the Ghost King!
