Chapter 002: Two Magicians
The two magicians seemed puzzled upon seeing Du Fan, as he didn’t exude any killing aura. Almost simultaneously, they let out an “eh?” When they sensed Du Fan’s mental power, they couldn’t help but exchange a glance.
After a moment, one of them gave Du Fan a cold look and said indifferently, “Are you also a magician?”
His tone was filled with coldness and arrogance, as if he didn’t even consider Du Fan to be worth attention.
Du Fan murmured to himself but still managed to show a perfectly appropriate smile. “No… Esteemed magicians, how could I be considered a magician? I only know a little magic.”
“You’re quite good…” The magician ignored Du Fan’s words and continued, “You have abundant magical energy and strong mental power. It’s a shame though…”
At this point, the coldness on his face faded slightly, but he shook his head as if deeply regretful.
Du Fan couldn’t help but ask, “What’s a shame?”
The magician snorted and said, “It’s a shame that you can’t use magic at all… The use of mental power isn’t like yours, and your magical energy isn’t hidden in this way either… I wonder who your teacher is. If they could give you such magical energy at such a young age, why didn’t they teach you any magic skills? Kid, if I’m not mistaken, your casting speed is fast, but the power of your magic isn’t stable, right?”
Du Fan was slightly surprised and asked, “Esteemed magician, how did you guess that?”
The magician sneered, “How do I need to guess? Just by looking at your control of mental power and magical energy, I know you’re a novice. I really can’t understand how someone like you was trained…”
As he spoke, he continued to sneer, as if sneering were everything in his life.
The other magician, seemingly aware of his companion’s personality, smiled slightly, reduced his killing aura, and gave Du Fan a gentle smile. “Alright, rookie… Can you tell me what you’re doing standing at the entrance of the Magic Guild headquarters? You should know that only magicians at least at level five are qualified to enter the headquarters… Ordinary magicians who try to enter will be killed without mercy…”
Although this magician wore a smile, his words weren’t any more polite than the other’s. Even when saying “killed without mercy,” his tone was as gentle as a lover’s whisper.
Yet despite his words, Du Fan felt terrified.
These two people—one with a smiling face and the other with a cold expression—were both unforgiving toward him. Truly, the members of the Mage Guild are all monsters! But since these two are so arrogant, they must be quite strong, right? With that thought, Du Fan’s mental energy instinctively reached out slightly, as he wanted to see what level these two mages were at. Yet as soon as his mental energy extended, he suddenly heard a cold “hmph” sound. That hum carried a fierce killing intent! Though it was an extremely faint sound, it seemed to explode in his ears like a distant thunderclap! Du Fan was shocked and immediately felt that deadly aura spreading along with his mental energy, as if it were trying to invade his mind. Fortunately, Du Fan’s mental energy was extremely strong. The moment he sensed something was wrong, he resolutely withdrew his mental energy… Then, as if there was an explosion, his extended mental energy instantly turned to dust along with that spreading killing aura! With a loud boom! Du Fan felt a sharp pain in his head and nearly fainted… His body staggered, and he covered his chest, vomiting. Even after a while, he still felt dizzy… “How bold! Daring to use mental energy at the entrance of the Mage Guild!” A voice filled with killing intent rang out coldly, as if right beside his ear. Du Fan was startled. Ignoring his dizziness, he forced himself to stand upright, but saw the two mages’ gazes shooting at him like lightning. The killing intent radiating from them almost froze all the blood in Du Fan’s body. Du Fan inwardly groaned in despair. Since he started his journey, he had mostly encountered warriors or inferior mages. Even when fighting Reine, her witchcraft was completely different from the magic of Roland Continent… Even when fighting Gannon, he hadn’t been at a disadvantage… This smooth success had made him a bit arrogant, but he never expected to encounter two true mages today and suffer such a heavy loss so easily… Moreover, Du Fan suspected that even if he went all out, he might not be a match for either of these two mages…
He’s a legitimate magician, not something that a half-baked amateur like myself can compare to. Even if I have countless magic scrolls and can just throw them around in a fight, against such a legitimate magician, having more scrolls probably won’t help at all…
Du Fan knew clearly that although he had suffered a huge loss today, it wasn’t entirely without benefit—at least he had become a bit less arrogant. But the situation before him…
Du Fan couldn’t help but groan inwardly.
The two magicians saw Du Fan’s pained expression but he didn’t collapse. They exchanged glances, both showing a hint of surprise.
You see, the move they had just used was one that combined mental energy with killing intent. An ordinary person would likely have their head explode upon encountering it, and even a great magician would probably faint.
Although they realized Du Fan was a novice and decided to spare his life, that move wasn’t something an ordinary person could withstand. In their minds, Du Fan might not have his head explode, but fainting for a few days was inevitable. Yet unexpectedly, Du Fan only staggered and didn’t faint at all—his mental strength was far beyond their expectations.
But this surprise lasted only a moment. The two magicians continued to stare at Du Fan coldly. The one with a cold expression glared at him with murderous intent and said, “Novice, hasn’t your teacher told you that releasing mental energy at the entrance of the Magicians’ Guild is an act of hostility? We can now consider that you’ve challenged us two magicians to a duel…”
Without giving Du Fan a chance to argue, the magician raised his hand, and a wave of cold energy shot out from his wide magic robe, charging at Du Fan with fierce killing intent.
In an instant, Du Fan felt as though the air around him was about to freeze solid.
But in such a situation, he didn’t dare to confront it head-on. He simply tapped his toes slightly and darted to the side to avoid the attack.
Then, with a “whoosh,” a huge ice block appeared out of thin air where Du Fan had stood!
This cold-faced magician, just like Kristy, though not casting spells with bare hands, had also reached the level of instant spellcasting.
Du Fan inwardly sighed bitterly. When had instant spellcasting become so worthless?
Judging from the other magician’s expression, it seemed he could do the same!
This Mage Guild is truly not ordinary!
The cold-faced mage saw that Du Fan didn’t use magic to resist but instead dodged his attack. He sneered, stared at Du Fan for a moment, then said coldly, “Amateur. I didn’t expect you to be proficient in both magic and combat! Didn’t your teacher tell you that mastering both combat energy and magic is impossible unless one is a genius? With such excellent talent, yet you still master both… Hmph…”
At that point, he took another close look at Du Fan’s robe and said with some surprise, “So you’re from that Cultists Association… I see… No wonder you know no rules. But amateur, don’t think just because you’re from the Cultists Association that I won’t do anything to you… Tell me, what exactly are you here for? If you don’t explain clearly, based on what you just did, even if I tear you to pieces, your Anthony won’t dare do anything!”
Though he spoke harshly this time, he didn’t intend to act again, probably fearing that harming Du Fan might trigger a conflict between the two factions…
After all, although the Holy Church and the Mage Guild were at odds, they had generally maintained peace. Though this mage was arrogant, he didn’t dare break this unspoken agreement.
But Du Fan just smiled bitterly upon hearing his words. The Holy Church, in the eyes of these people from the Mage Guild, had become nothing but a Cultists Association. He really didn’t know what to say. No wonder these two factions had always been at odds…
Since they were willing to hold back, Du Fan didn’t dare cause any more trouble. Moreover, the skills of these two people made him even more eager to learn about the Mage Guild. With a slight smile, Du Fan said, “Respected mages, it was my mistake for using mental power recklessly. I hope you’ll spare me considering my ignorance of the rules… Also, although I’m from the Holy Church, I’m here in a personal capacity. It was Miss Kristy from your guild who invited me…”
