Chapter 005: The Wolf Pack
Suddenly, a crisp “rustling” sound came from ahead, as if something was crawling on the ground.
Du Fan’s heart stirred. He listened intently, his expression growing solemn.
The rustling sounds seemed to be approaching slowly. Though not loud, they persisted endlessly, as if something was rushing toward him.
Du Fan couldn’t help frowning. He threw the bell on the ground and rummaged through his storage ring, taking out Silver Moon and Phantom. The sound made his heart pound, as if some danger was imminent.
Bell Sound sat half on the ground. She was clearly scared too, but her face showed a calmness. Du Fan glanced at her and inwardly groaned. If he had known, he wouldn’t have involved this woman. Now that she had lost her purity, she seemed to think life and death held little meaning. If she turned on him later, no matter whose side she was on, his troubles would be huge!
Perhaps cutting off her head now was an option?
This highly tempting idea flashed through Du Fan’s mind but was quickly dismissed. If he really did that, his future would be even harder, as this woman surely knew far more about the Abyssal Valley than he did.
After a while, the sounds finally stopped. Countless dim flames appeared around them. Du Fan extended his mental energy slightly and felt a prickle on his scalp. With a bitter smile, he said, “Bell Sound… didn’t you say there are no birds in the sky and no beasts on the ground here? Then what the hell are these things?”
Abyssal Wolves!
Actually, without Du Fan saying anything, Bell Sound had already seen them. What appeared before her was an Abyssal Wolf. Though not as huge as the three they had encountered before, it was still by no means ordinary!
One of them charged straight at them, its body ablaze with demonic flames. The mist in the air condensed into ice crystals under the effect of the flames, producing those “rustling” sounds!
Cold sweat broke out on Du Fan’s forehead as he watched the charging Abyssal Wolf. He muttered, “Abyssal Wolves! Damn these Abyssal Wolves again! It seems today, either I’ll eat braised wolf meat or be eaten by it. Life’s ups and downs are truly astonishing!”
Seeing the Abyssal Wolf approaching ever closer, Du Fan quickly recited a spell and flicked his hand lightly. With that motion, a wind blade sliced through the air.
With a soft “whoosh,” the Abyssal Wolf staggered under Du Fan’s attack, rolling backward several times. It quickly got up, shook itself off, and let out a howl at Du Fan amidst the swirling demonic flames.
“Damn it, it’s calling for its companions,” Du Fan wiped the cold sweat from his brow. “These things have allies. We’re done for this time… Women… It seems we’re both going to die here today! What a stupid test! Even if I die, I’ll curse your damned teacher!”
Before he could finish speaking, the Abyssal Wolf staggered again and lunged at Du Fan like a shadow, opening its maw in mid-air.
Du Fan didn’t have time to use other techniques. Instinctively, he kicked it, but it felt as though he was kicking an ice block. Ice armor formed on the surface of his shoe immediately. He stamped his foot frantically, and with the glow of his light combat energy, he managed to melt the ice armor.
The Abyssal Wolf, kicked into the air, spun a few times before falling back to the ground. It got up again, gritting its teeth.
Looking at it, Du Fan felt a slight shift in his heart. If it were the kind of Abyssal Wolf he encountered in the cave earlier, even a single kick might not have sent it flying—his own foot bones would have broken first. After all, he hadn’t had time to use combat energy and relied purely on brute force. Although this Abyssal Wolf looked extremely ferocious, its level was probably not high. If that was the case, he could handle it. But he was worried they would keep coming endlessly. Even if he wasn’t bitten to death, he would die from exhaustion!
Seeing the Abyssal Wolf charge again, Du Fan resolved himself. With killing intent rising, there was no time to worry about anything else—eliminating this beast first was what mattered.
I wonder if it can freeze my long sword too.
In the blink of an eye, as he thought this, the Abyssal Wolf was already back in front of Du Fan. This time, he was prepared. The light combat energy on his long sword flashed slightly, and he swung a holy light cross-cut.
The sword strike, formed from combat energy, hit the Abyssal Wolf squarely. It let out a mournful cry and instantly split into four pieces that fell to the ground, releasing a foul stench.
Yet the demonic flames on its body continued to burn, showing no sign of dying out. Du Fan shook off the blood droplets from the blade of his sword and snorted, “It looks pretty impressive, but it’s actually nothing special…” At that moment, Du Fan suddenly stopped speaking as he heard a loud “whooshing” sound—intense and relentless, as if hitting one’s eardrums. Moments later, the mist around them seemed to dissipate entirely, revealing the scene ahead. Du Fan stared in shock at what lay before him: the ground was covered in ice crystals, but that wasn’t the main focus. What mattered was that countless Nether Wolves stood atop those crystals. These wolves were about the same size as the one Du Fan had killed earlier. They gritted their teeth, their demonic flames merging into one vast blaze. Thousands of these wolves crowded together, surrounding Du Fan and Ringo in the middle. “Ah!” Even with her current state of mind, Ringo couldn’t help but scream at the sight of so many Nether Wolves. She struggled to get up and desperately recited a spell, preparing a spellcraft. At this moment, Ringo couldn’t care less about Du Fan having defiled her purity. Though she hated him, she couldn’t let him die like this—she had to complete the task assigned by her teacher no matter what. With that thought, Ringo felt she hated Du Fan less, even experiencing a strange sense of joy. Such a twisted mindset was truly peculiar. But women’s hearts are like needles beneath the sea—love and hate often lie just apart, with deep love leading to intense hatred, and vice versa! Du Fan gave a bitter smile, thinking, “It’s over. With this number, not to mention they attacking actively, even if they just sat there motionless, I’d have to cut through them all to get through.” He hadn’t given a few of the larger wolves to eat, yet now he was about to become food for these smaller ones. At that moment, the Nether Wolves began to move. A few at the front slowly approached, emitting mournful howls. Suddenly, all of them pounced at almost the same time!!! Du Fan roared loudly. His combat energy surged violently, with white and light blue energy intertwining to form a strange yet sacred glow. His Silver Moon Sword grew several feet long as his combat energy formed its blade. Du Fan took a deep breath, spun his Silver Moon Sword, and swept it around them, instantly creating a ring of combat energy around them.
The approaching demon wolves were instantly cut in half; some died on the spot while others wailed continuously as they fell to the ground. Blood and demonic flames mixed together, turning what had once been a world of death into a battlefield of hellish chaos! Du Fan felt disgusted, but he dared not stop swinging his long sword. Supported by his combat energy, his sword techniques flowed smoothly, creating a protective barrier around the two of them. At the same time, he kept chanting spells and casting magic spells from time to time, instantly eliminating groups of demon wolves. Yet despite Du Fan’s speed, it seemed as if there were more and more of those abyssal wolves, all charging at him with gritted teeth. Even those demon wolves that Du Fan had cut in half, whether dead or not, were immediately attacked by the surrounding wolves. Then came the sound of “crunching” noises. Du Fan knew exactly what was happening, and his scalp tingled with fear. He dared not slow down at all, fearing that even a slight delay would make him prey for those wolves. What the hell? This was still the Twilight Mountains, after all—still part of the human world! How could there be more of these abyssal creatures than ants? By now, Du Fan had a vague suspicion that the three abyssal wolves he encountered in the cave earlier might not have been set up intentionally either; they probably came from this submerged valley. After fighting for a long time, Du Fan’s combat energy gradually diminished. Thanks to his formidable skills and a recent accidental level-up to level five, he was able to hold on this long. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t have lasted so long. As his combat energy faded, the range he could control with his Silver Moon Sword became smaller and smaller. A few abyssal wolves managed to break through his defense and reach them, but Du Fan kicked them away one by one. Yet these wolf creatures seemed endless. At first, Du Fan could still count how many he had killed, but by the end, he didn’t even bother to count—whether it was three hundred or eight hundred, he had forgotten. As time passed and his combat energy grew weaker, if it weren’t for sheer determination, Du Fan might have collapsed at any moment. Such constant depletion could only be endured by a sword sage; ordinary people couldn’t stand it. Although Du Fan claimed to be skilled in both magic and martial arts, his lack of combat experience meant he didn’t know how to conserve his strength. By now, he had exhausted himself so much that he could fall at any second.
