Chapter 006: Memories
Faced with Tasia, who already knew of his strength, Du Fan saw no need to hide anything. In front of her, he poured his mental energy into Ferre like a tide, breaking through his defenses. Ferre shuddered violently, spat out a mouthful of blood with a “Wah—”, and then slowly regained consciousness.
Seeing Du Fan before him, Ferre was clearly stunned. After blinking several times with effort, he rasped, “Lord Du Fan… be careful… be careful of Alfred and Nicholas… be careful…”
The first thing Ferre did upon waking was worry about Du Fan—something Du Fan hadn’t expected at all. It would be a lie to say he wasn’t moved. Though he now knew that this Ferre was likely not from Roland Academy, out of caution, his expression darkened as he asked, “Why be careful of Lord Alfred and Saint Nicholas? And… how did you end up like this? Where are the others? What exactly happened?”
Ferre struggled to get up, tearing at his wounds and spitting more blood. After a while, he said, “They’re dead! Everyone else is dead! Alfred and Nicholas… they betrayed their faith… Their souls will be burned in the holy fire forever…”
It was impossible for Ferre to know that Du Fan and the others had already learned about Alfred and Nicholas through chance. So, hearing his words, Du Fan immediately concluded that this guy wasn’t from Roland Academy. But with such severe injuries—comparable to Tasia’s—this situation offered no advantage at all.
At this thought, Du Fan resented himself for getting involved. If he had ignored that energy earlier, things would have been fine. But by acting now, wasn’t he just causing trouble for himself?
Yet, even though he thought so, Du Fan naturally wouldn’t show it on his face. Holy light shimmered in his hands as his divine combat energy slowly flowed through Ferre’s body, improving his condition slightly. Only after his complexion improved did Du Fan say calmly, “Explain clearly. What exactly happened?”
Ferre sighed softly, glanced around, and saw Tasia, who also looked pale. After nodding at her, he said, “So, both lords are unharmed. It’s truly the blessing of the Light God. With them here… those two traitors’ schemes probably won’t succeed so easily.”
Du Fan shook his head and said, “Ferei, get to the point. With your rambling, I have no idea what’s going on at all.”
Ferei nodded and said, “That was… that was what happened yesterday. After the two lords were sent away by Nicholas using that holy light shield scroll, things became strange.”
Du Fan asked, “How strange?”
A look of confusion appeared on Ferei’s face. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Originally, weren’t those undead creatures all extremely vicious? But after the two lords were taken away, we Templar knights noticed that their presence seemed to gradually weaken. Eventually, they became so weak that they posed no threat to us at all.”
“At first, we didn’t know what was happening. We only guessed that perhaps due to the passage of so much time, that so-called Undead Calamity magic array had lost its effect. Or maybe we weren’t actually trapped in that magic at all.”
“But after all, we are Templar knights and not very talented in magic. So we made such guesses, but none of us voiced them out loud.”
“Under these circumstances, we easily dealt with wave after wave of attacks from those undead creatures. It seemed we could eliminate them all. But then, something completely unexpected happened.”
Although Du Fan already knew what had happened, he exchanged a glance with Tasia. Neither spoke, just listening quietly.
Ferei narrowed his eyes, his expression filled with confusion. After a while, he sighed softly again and said, “At that time, that kid Gavi was dealing with a dozen or so seemingly extremely weak undead creatures. But just then, Alfred suddenly appeared behind him. Gavi thought Alfred was coming to help him and was about to thank him, but before he could finish speaking, Alfred suddenly reached out, grabbed Gavi’s head, and twisted it gently, breaking his neck. Although we Templar knights are strong, we were all exhausted after fighting for so long. Unprepared as we were, Gavi was simply killed by that bastard Alfred…”
As he spoke, Ferei’s voice grew bitter. Apparently, he couldn’t believe, no matter what, that their revered Lord Alfred would do such a thing.
Du Fan sighed inwardly and said, “Then what about Nicholas? And the rest of you? What exactly did you do?”
Fere smiled bitterly and continued, “At that time, we already had some doubts about our situation. If it were just ordinary undead creatures, why would we go to such great lengths to send Lord Du Fan and Lady Tasia away? So while dealing with those undead, we were extremely cautious… But we never could have imagined… that our careful efforts would lead us to such a situation.”
“After Gavi died, the three of us remaining Templar Knights were shocked and confused, but we weren’t idiots—we roughly understood what had happened: there was a traitor among us. Though the identity of the traitor was rather extreme, there was nothing we could do about it.”
“But at that moment, for some reason, Nicholas hesitated for a short while before taking action. If he had acted sooner, the four of us Templar Knights would definitely have died. Yet his hesitation bought us precious time.”
Du Fan nodded slightly and asked, “So what did the other three of you do?”
Fere sighed and said, “We Templar Knights have fought side by side for years and understand each other’s intentions well. Kara was the first to charge forward, right into Nicholas’s holy flame. Fortunately, that flame didn’t cause much damage to us Templar Knights. The other two of us took this opportunity to run, knowing full well our strength—no matter how hard we fought, we had no chance of survival. So the only option was to flee. The two of us fought our way through the undead while running. Unexpectedly, Kara bought us several minutes of time. By the time we sensed Kara’s presence disappear, we were already far away from Nicholas and the others.”
Fere’s tone was calm, but Du Fan could sense their emotions at that time. Not knowing how to comfort them, he simply sighed softly. Although Du Fan didn’t have much goodwill toward the Templar Knights, hearing Fere’s words made him feel a rare degree of admiration for that Kara.
“We kept running, not knowing how long it had been, but Nicholas and Alfred kept chasing closely behind, refusing to give us any chance. In the end, when it seemed we were about to be caught, my last companion, Dan, made a heroic decision—he decided to draw those two away, leaving the chance of survival to me.”
Du Fan nodded slightly. “With Nicholas’s abilities, if he really set his mind to finding us, you wouldn’t have had any way to escape. So how did you manage it in the end?”
Feyre smiled faintly. “Lord Du Fan, if I’m not mistaken, you must have some knowledge of various magical potions. You surely know about the potion that induces a fake death, right?”
Du Fan nodded. “I have indeed heard of it.”
Feyre continued, “The effect of this potion is to stop all mental activity and physical movement in the person who takes it for twelve hours—during that time, they appear dead. After Dan made me take it, my breath became just like that of a dead person. Even if Nicholas were extremely skilled, he probably wouldn’t be able to sense anything. And even if he did, he would think I was dead.”
“And then, I don’t know what happened after that. When I woke up, the first person I saw was you, Lord Du Fan… Both of you… You must be extremely careful of those two. I think only you two can stop their scheme.”
Du Fan sighed lightly. “What exactly is their scheme?”
Feyre shook his head. “I’m not sure about the specifics, but if what’s in this divine palace isn’t important, why would they turn against us so quickly?”
Du Fan didn’t know what to say for a moment. After exchanging glances with Tasia for a while, he sighed and briefly recounted what had happened the previous night.
The more Feyre listened, the more surprised he became. Eventually, he couldn’t help but sit up and say, “The Source of Gods! It’s actually the Source of Gods! That’s why Nicholas and Alfred gave up their years of disguise!”
