Chapter 003: Smashing
As Du Fan had just climbed over the ice wall, the green, eerie eyes of the three necrotic wolves immediately locked onto him. There was no time to think further—he quickly tossed a magic scroll from his hand. Instantly, a fireball, like a red sun, shot forth into the darkness toward the three wolves. The necrotic wolves seemed aware of the power of magic; though they let out a few low growls, they were forced to retreat a few steps.
Meanwhile, Du Fan continued to act swiftly. His hands moved like a pianist, casting magic scrolls of various attributes without pause—wind blades mixed with fireballs, fireballs alongside ice arrows, and even lightning within the ice arrows… This attack, built up from piles of gold coins, was truly extraordinary. Just its sheer power was astonishing. Perhaps out of an innate fear of magic, the three necrotic wolves kept retreating under Du Fan’s attacks.
Finally, one of the wolves seemed completely enraged. It roared loudly, opened its mouth wide, and its tongue lashed out at Du Fan. Du Fan was shocked and instinctively tried to dodge, but the speed of the attack was so fast that it was almost impossible to react. Despair filled his heart as he thought bitterly that if he survived, he would definitely take Miss Ruhua to a luxurious residence to keep her by his side—remaining a virgin until death would indeed be a great tragedy in life!
“Bang!”
Du Fan had already closed his eyes, resigned to his fate. But at that moment, something seemed to block in front of him, producing a loud noise. Looking closely, it was the “Wind Shield Spell” he had just cast. This spell had been enhanced by Chenchen and was even more powerful than when Du Fan used it himself. Against the attack of the wolves’ steel-like tongues, the wind shield remained intact.
Delighted, Du Fan thought that spending so much money was indeed worth it. “You necrotic wolves think you’re tough, huh? Even a sixth-level Temple Knight can’t fight back against you. With hundreds of thousands of gold coins at my disposal, I can still fight you!”
Seizing the opportunity, Du Fan threw another magic scroll, sending a wind blade that struck the wolf’s tongue. With a crack, the tongue was severed.
The necrotic wolves let out a series of agonized screams as their bodies began to tremble violently. Du Fan didn’t hesitate at all. He threw all the remaining magic scrolls he had in one go, then reached for his storage ring again. This time, however, he didn’t pull out any magic scrolls but rather a dozen or so bottles. “Bang—bang—bang—” Several magic scrolls also exploded simultaneously. All of these remaining scrolls contained fire spells, and instantly, a red wave of flames engulfed the three necrotic wolves. Amidst the blazing fire, most of the wolves’ bodies were engulfed in flames and began to burn fiercely. Their agonized screams continued, but the damage inflicted by these spells seemed extremely limited. Perhaps stunned by Du Fan’s spells, the wolves in the fire struggled to charge toward Du Fan’s position. Du Fan didn’t dare delay. Thanks to his Swiftness spell, he was extremely fast. In an instant, he appeared in front of the three wolves and, without hesitation, threw the dozen or so bottles at them. These bottles contained combat energy and moved at great speed. The wolves didn’t have time to react before being hit… “Whoosh—” A burst of green smoke emerged. Although they were still burning, the wolves’ bodies took on a strange greenish-black color. Their bodies continued to tremble before they finally collapsed with frustrated roars… Du Fan didn’t want to waste time. Though it was costly, he searched his storage ring for a while longer and pulled out a few more bottles, throwing them at the wolves’ corpses on the ground without even looking. But this time, nothing changed on those corpses… Finally, the burning flames died down, and the wolves’ bodies had turned into charcoals. Du Fan let out a sigh of relief. His body felt weak, so he stepped back a few steps and leaned against a large tree before catching his breath.
Though he was gasping for breath, Du Fan’s heart was bleeding at that moment. What he had thrown in his final attack was nothing other than the holy water he had purchased at a high price from the Holy Church. Besides expelling evil, holy water also had excellent healing effects for those who practiced light magic. Du Fan had bought so much of it intending to use it when injured. But now, almost all of it had been used up. It had taken hundreds of thousands of gold coins just to barely defeat those three Corpse Wolves. To be honest, he wasn’t sure whether to be happy or frustrated.
The people lying on the ground stared at Du Fan with wide eyes. It wasn’t really that Du Fan was that amazing to warrant such surprise. Even if he had shown the strength of a mage now, they wouldn’t have been too astonished. But the sheer number of magic scrolls he had thrown was simply absurd.
Creating a single magic scroll required a mage to expend countless amounts of magic power and effort, and many times they were priceless.
Although many people in Roland Continent never saw a mage in their lifetime, even more never saw a magic scroll.
Yet, in just that battle, Du Fan had thrown at least fifty magic scrolls!
Good heavens, if converted into gold coins, it would have been enough to crush everyone present.
As for the bottle Du Fan threw last, although the members of the Snow Fox Mercenary Group didn’t recognize it, the Temple Knights could tell it was holy water. While holy water indeed worked wonders against dark creatures like Corpse Wolves, the Holy Church’s holy water wasn’t something that could be used casually! These Temple Knights had never seen anyone waste it like this. Even when they got injured while on a mission, they would only use a little holy water for healing. Du Fan, on the other hand, had thrown so much all at once.
So, at market price, Du Fan must have spent millions of gold coins in that battle. Of course, since his magic scrolls were made by exploiting Chenchen’s labor, his actual loss was only in the hundreds of thousands of gold coins. But that was already a quarter of his current wealth, causing him so much pain he almost felt like vomiting blood.
That battle also strengthened Du Fan’s resolve to find ways to make money in the future.
Thinking about it, it was hard to say whether that battle was a blessing or a curse for Du Fan.
After finally recovering, Du Fan slowly stood up. First, he went to deal with the bodies of the three corpse wolves, digging out the magic stones from their heads. Then he casually dug a pit and buried all three bodies before finally feeling relieved.
The three magic stones unearthed were each the size of a thumb, with an extremely beautiful pitch-black color. Du Fan did some quick calculations in his mind and realized that selling them would likely cover his losses, which brought him some comfort.
However, thinking about what he had thrown away, he couldn’t help feeling resentful. Leaving Nicholas and Tasia aside, Alfred surely knew about his current situation. Yet that bastard acted as if he wouldn’t help, as if he wanted to watch him turn into prey for magical beasts alive.
At this thought, Du Fan became furious. He glanced back in the direction of the camp, but it was still pitch dark. He wasn’t sure if Alfred had fled with the rest of the people.
As the situation eased, several Temple Knights and members of the Snow Fox Mercenaries also struggled to get up. Du Fan hated those Snow Fox Mercenaries deeply, but since he lacked the strength to trouble them now, he simply took out another bottle of holy water and handed it to Ferre, signaling the Temple Knights to heal themselves.
The holy water was highly effective. Although the Temple Knights were all bleeding from their wounds, they were lucky enough to be unharmed physically, though weakened. After taking the holy water, they immediately felt much better.
Ferre came over and gave Du Fan a deep look before saying, “Lord Du Fan, this time, to save us, you not only lost all your possessions but also almost lost your life. Rest assured, I, Ferre, will remember your great kindness for the rest of my life.”
Du Fan waved his hand and said, “Ferre, we’re all on the same side—why be polite? Let’s head back to the camp quickly. If we stay here any longer, who knows what other magical beasts might appear?”
The Temple Knights nodded and picked up their fallen swords, heading toward the camp. Throughout the whole time, they didn’t even glance at those Snow Fox Mercenaries.
The Temple Knights were always known for their kindness, but at this moment, each of them felt utter disgust toward those members of the Snow Fox Mercenaries. Although, given the Temple Knights’ character, they wouldn’t seek revenge on them, it was impossible for them to even greet the Snow Fox Mercenaries voluntarily. As for Du Fan, it was already rare enough that he didn’t cause them trouble—how could he possibly pay attention to these guys? Seeing these so-called “saviors” turn and leave, the captain who had gotten up felt embarrassed, but after considering his situation, he could only cough softly.
