Chapter 321: Who Exactly?
In the Great Elder’s room, Ye Feng and Wu Tian found no traces at all. It seemed the person had entered very carefully, taken the three boxes containing the Gu King, and left immediately.
“Let’s go see what we can find with the Third Elder!” Ye Feng said to Wu Tian. “There are no clues here to identify that person. He clearly planned this ahead of time and erased all traces.”
“I’ll stay here to preserve the scene. You go!” Wu Tian shook his head.
“That’s good too!” Ye Feng agreed, finding some sense in Wu Tian’s words. “I’ll head over first and meet up with the Third Elder here later.”
In the sky, the rumbling continued, but Ye Feng no longer had any desire to watch. He found something suspicious about this whole situation.
He rushed toward the Second Elder’s residence and saw the Third Elder just coming out of it.
“He’s not there?” Ye Feng frowned slightly.
“The guards say he went to the library early this morning and hasn’t returned. Over the past ten days or so, he’s gone to the library early every day and returned late,” the Third Elder continued. “I just checked his house and found nothing unusual. I’m heading to the library now. What about you? Have you found anything?”
“We haven’t found any clues,” Ye Feng shook his head. “Xiao Tian is guarding that place now. I’ll go to the library with you, then return to meet up with Xiao Tian.”
“Okay.” The Third Elder looked slightly worried. “If he’s in the library, we can ask the guards there if he left at any point.”
“Even if he left, the guards probably wouldn’t know, right?” Ye Feng thought it wouldn’t be very useful.
“The library is different from other buildings,” the Third Elder said, shaking his head at Ye Feng. “There are many restrictions inside. People of different strengths can only enter designated areas to read materials. They can’t enter or leave freely; they must use the designated entrances and exits.”
“In other words, once he’s inside, if he leaves at any point, the guards will definitely know!” Ye Feng realized that this way, the Second Elder’s movements could be monitored.
“That’s right,” the Third Elder nodded.
The territory of the Black Witch Clan wasn’t very large. In the blink of an eye, Ye Feng and the Third Elder arrived at the library. It was still a small house that looked like a regular dwelling from the outside. If Ye Feng were to find such a house with no distinctive features, it would take him some time.
“That’s the place!” The Third Elder glanced at Ye Feng, then headed straight for the door.
“Third Elder!” The two guards bowed slightly to him.
“Has the Second Elder been here?” the Third Elder asked.
“He arrived early this morning!” one of the guards said with a smile.
“Yes, the Second Elder has been doing this every day these past few days—coming as soon as it gets light and staying until late,” the other guard added with a nod and a smile.
“When did he arrive today?” Ye Feng pressed.
“He came right at sunrise!” the two guards replied in unison.
“Has he come out at all since then?” Ye Feng continued.
“We haven’t seen him come out; he’s probably inside looking through some documents,” one of the guards said with a nod.
“Then let’s go in and take a look!” Ye Feng suggested, but the two guards stopped him with their hands. “You can’t go in!”
The Third Elder also seemed apologetic. “I’m sorry, but this is our clan’s rule—only those who belong to our clan are allowed to enter the library. One must get permission from both the clan leader and the council to enter the public reading area.”
“Alright, then I’ll wait outside. You go in alone!” Ye Feng didn’t argue much, as one must adapt to local customs. Since it was their clan’s rule, there was no need for him to violate it and cause unnecessary conflict. Besides, he wasn’t particularly interested in the cultivation techniques of the Black Witch Clan—he certainly didn’t want to implant parasites in his own body; just thinking about it was unacceptable.
“I’ll go in first and be back soon!” The Third Elder gave Ye Feng an apologetic smile before pushing open the door and entering.
Ye Feng paced slowly outside the library, waiting patiently. “If it wasn’t the Second Elder, then who could it be?”
Before long, the Third Elder came out with the Second Elder, whose expression was gloomy.
“How was the corpse of that parasite disposed of?” the Second Elder demanded as soon as he appeared.
“The First Elder woke up today and fought with Witch Mad. So we all left his house, but the corpse of the Parasite King was left on the small table beside his bed. We only discovered it just now. We don’t know exactly when it disappeared, as the fight between the two had already lasted most of the day,” Ye Feng said, noticing the Second Elder’s angry expression.
“Who was the first to notice this?” the Second Elder pressed.
“It was me!” Ye Feng admitted frankly.
“Let’s first go to the Elder’s room to see if we can find any more clues!” suggested the Third Elder. She knew that if the Second Elder continued to press further, it might lead to a dispute with Ye Feng. After all, Ye Feng had suddenly left their battlefield and gone to the Elder’s room because he didn’t see the Second Elder and suspected he was up to something behind the scenes.
“Weren’t you watching the battle earlier? Why did you suddenly return to the Elder’s room?” The Second Elder’s tone was clearly hostile.
“Because I suddenly remembered that the bodies of those three Gu Kings were still left in the Elder’s room, and no one was there to take care of them. So I planned to collect them and wait until the Elder’s matters were settled before proceeding with the next stage of treatment. But when I got there, they were gone.” Of course, Ye Feng couldn’t say in front of him, “I suspect you might be doing something sneaky, that’s why I went to the Elder’s room to check.”
The Third Elder glanced at Ye Feng and chose to remain silent.
“Who else went with you to the Elder’s room to investigate?” the Second Elder pressed.
“Nobody, just me!” Although Ye Feng knew this answer might arouse suspicion, he had no choice but to tell the truth, as there was someone else present who knew the facts.
“Then that means you had time to commit the crime!” the Second Elder became even more aggressive.
“That’s right, you can put it that way!” Ye Feng wasn’t angry. This was entirely within his expectations. What the other person said was true—he indeed had time to do it. “With no one around, I just needed to put the three boxes in my storage ring. But why would I do that?”
“I helped you treat the illness. Wu Ze has promised me that as a reward, I can choose whatever I want. If I wanted those three Gu King bodies, I could simply ask for them openly. Why would I resort to such sneaky actions?” Ye Feng retorted.
“Second Elder, let’s not argue about this for now. Finding the real thief is the most important thing!” the Third Elder reminded them. “Let’s go to the Elder’s room first!”
The Second Elder glared at Ye Feng indignantly, then snorted coldly and stopped talking.
The Third Elder shook her head helplessly and rushed toward the Elder’s house.
Ye Feng immediately followed, “With the Second Elder so angry, it seems the item really wasn’t taken by him. Although there are restrictions in the library, it’s not impossible to leave. However, his anger is evident in his aura and behavior, so it doesn’t seem like he’s lying.”
The Second Elder also took off and quickly overtook Ye Feng and the Third Elder, reaching the door of the First Elder’s room first.
“I seem to have missed something…” Ye Feng appeared distracted.
“You’re back!” Wu Tian glanced at the Second Elder with a strange expression after seeing Ye Feng and the others enter the First Elder’s bedroom.
“Did you find anything?” the Second Elder asked angrily.
“Inside the bedroom, aside from the three boxes containing the Gu King’s corpse being missing, nothing unusual was found. The intruder didn’t leave any clues,” Wu Tian still hadn’t found any evidence.
“Who else has entered this house? The First Elder’s room must have some basic restrictions. To sneak in silently, those restrictions should leave some trace.” The Second Elder looked at Ye Feng and the others. “If there are no traces on the restrictions, either the intruder’s strength exceeds that of the First Elder or it was someone who has been in this room before.”
As he spoke, his eyes were fixed on Ye Feng, clearly not trusting this outsider.
“There are indeed traces on the restrictions, but that’s all. No other clues exist,” Ye Feng nodded.
“That trace…” The Second Elder looked around before finally fixing his gaze on a wall directly opposite the house door. “Over there!”
As soon as he finished speaking, he waved his sleeve, and a beam of white light shot out, disappearing into the wall. Before long, a golden barrier surrounding the entire room appeared before everyone—this was the restriction set up by the First Elder.
But where the Second Elder had pointed earlier, there was nothing.
“This restriction was developed by me and the First Elder back then. It has a memory function; any attack will be clearly recorded as wounds. If triggered in some way, the original traces of those wounds will reappear,” the Second Elder said with pride.
At that moment, a wound slowly appeared at the spot the Second Elder had pointed to on the golden barrier, growing larger over time…
Ye Feng and the others were stunned…
