Chapter 52: Worms
“I heard you’re looking for me?” In a tall building in City H, Ye Feng sat calmly on a sofa, with over a dozen people around him, tense and aiming guns at his head from a distance.
“You’re quite efficient. I thought the chances of you showing up were slim!” Pearl, sitting across from the sofa, hadn’t expected Ye Feng to actually come looking for her. “It seems those people are really important to you.”
“Hmm, I’ve had some free time these past couple of days and wanted to drop by school to say hello. That’s how I found out you were here. As for their importance… after all, we know each other, and I don’t want to drag innocent ordinary people into our feud. So… you should know… I’m a soft-hearted person…” Ye Feng spread his hands. This gesture made the dozen people around him aim their guns even more tightly at his head.
“Hey, I’m already here with empty hands. There’s no need for this. I’m not some legendary Dracula or Monster Hunter Van Helsing!” Ye Feng stood up helplessly and looked around. His action made all those with guns take a step back.
“Pearl, I think your underlings are not cute at all!” Ye Feng took a step toward Pearl. At that moment, he heard the sound of fingers resting on triggers. He raised his hands. “Look at them.”
Pearl glanced at Ye Feng before shouting at the others, “Stop aiming at him. He can’t escape anyway!”
The dozen guns pointed at Ye Feng’s head were finally lowered.
“Ye Feng, I want to know—did you kill those drug lords?” Pearl stared intently at Ye Feng’s face, trying to determine whether what he was about to say was true or false.
“That’s right, I did it!” Ye Feng admitted easily.
Hearing this answer, Pearl’s expression froze. She hadn’t expected him to admit it so readily; she had thought he would deny it.
“They were drug dealers—despicable guys. Do you really think what they did was wrong?” Ye Feng laughed.
“Do you know? Your actions have completely ruined our business. Do you have any idea the losses this will cause us?” Pearl snapped at Ye Feng.
“So what? Anyway, you’re not exactly a good person, are you? Isn’t your business just drug trafficking, ruining the youth of City H? Actually… compared to drug trafficking, I think if you chose to rob a bank, you might be a bit more tolerable.” Ye Feng joked.
“It seems Long Tian is really important to you. I’m wondering if the two of you have slept together?” Pearl finally couldn’t hold back and retorted sarcastically.
“Oh… beauty, if you put it that way, I can totally understand that you’re jealous. I wonder—are you jealous of me or Brother Long?” Ye Feng wasn’t at a loss in this confrontation; he had fully inherited Long Tian’s boldness.
“Hmph, sharp-tongued! It’s a shame you still don’t realize your situation!” Pearl snorted coldly and turned away. “Bring in the next one!”
Ye Feng casually put on black-rimmed glasses and sat down on the sofa. “Then let’s see what kind of surprise you have in store for me!”
Soon, Pearl’s men brought in the second guy from the dormitory.
“Ye Feng…” The second guy was visibly excited.
A smile appeared on Ye Feng’s lips. He saw the following stats for the second guy:
Total Combat Value: 503
Strength: 131
Speed: 125
Mental Strength: 119
Supernatural Ability: 128
“Take off those glasses!” Pearl saw Ye Feng wearing glasses and frowned tightly. “I demand that you take them off right now!!!”
“I refuse!” Ye Feng shook his head. “If I don’t take them off, can you really kill me?”
“I can’t kill you, but I can kill him. Take off those glasses and throw them at me!” Pearl shouted at Ye Feng, suspecting something strange about his glasses.
“Do you think this can threaten me?” Ye Feng laughed and shook his head. “Let me put it this way—these glasses are more valuable than his life. So… if you want to shoot, go ahead!”
“Well, it seems like you’re not here to save your classmates after all. You have another purpose, right?” Pearl grew nervous again. She had never encountered someone as tricky as Ye Feng before.
“I am indeed here to save my classmates, but not him…” As soon as Ye Feng finished speaking, he suddenly disappeared.
“Where did he go?” Pearl was utterly confused by what just happened.
“Over here!” With two light gunshots, the person who had just forced the second roommate out and the shapeshifter pretending to be him both fell to the ground. The dark figure that had flashed by also disappeared quickly.
“He needs to appear when attacking. Shoot in that direction next time he shows up,” Pearl deduced from what had just happened.
With three more gunshots, three more people collapsed. A faint voice came from the room where they were, “I’m sorry to disappoint you. I don’t even need to appear when attacking. I just let you see me on purpose!”
Hearing this, Pearl became panicked. The opponent’s gun and bullets were clearly special, and both the shapeshifter and the person pretending to hold him hostage were highly skilled, yet they were killed with just one shot each. Moreover, the opponent was an invisible marksman—a situation she had never expected at all.
“Damn it, where the hell did he hide the gun?” Pearl cursed inwardly. During the earlier inspection, Ye Feng didn’t carry any items at all, not even the gun he was using now or the glasses he had just put on his nose.
“Do you really want to know?” A ghostly voice appeared in her ear. Ye Feng wrapped his left hand around Pearl’s neck, pressing the silver pistol in his right hand against her head. He blew a playful kiss in her ear, “Oh… stay with me tonight, and you’ll know where a man hides his gun…”
“You’re shameless!” Pearl blushed with embarrassment.
“You guys, throw down your guns, or I’ll kill her!” Ye Feng’s icy voice pulled Pearl back to reality.
Out of concern for their own safety, the men hesitated to comply with this demand.
“Throw them down now!” The man closest to Pearl, who seemed upright and serious, immediately dropped his gun and shouted at the rest.
Only then did the others reluctantly throw down their guns.
“Are you nervous about her?” Seeing the middle-aged man watching his actions anxiously, Ye Feng laughed. “It seems there really is someone here who’s deeply in love!”
“Alright, go tie them up,” Ye Feng said to the middle-aged man. “Don’t even think about resisting. I’ll kill anyone who resists immediately. Only those who obey obediently might get a chance to live, if I’m in a good mood.”
The middle-aged man obediently found a rope to tie up the men before turning around. “Can you let her go? I’ll be your hostage.”
“Are you useful to me?” Ye Feng asked with a smile.
“I’m the deputy director of the provincial public security department…” The man lowered his head.
“Oh, I see. A middle-aged man who gains power and then thinks only of lust!” Ye Feng nodded as if it were obvious. “According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, it seems your needs have regressed… With your highest need for self-actualization satisfied, you’ve dropped back to physiological needs… Hmm, that explanation seems reasonable too.”
“As long as you release her, you can have anything you want, as long as I can make it happen. I promise I won’t pursue this any further; I’ll help you cover everything up.” The middle-aged man stepped closer, one step at a time. “Aren’t you trying to get your classmates back safely? I can guarantee their safety and ensure they’re never disturbed again.”
“That sounds good, but…” Ye Feng smirked and looked up at the screen on the wall. The original surveillance footage had turned into static, showing nothing at all. “It seems I don’t need help. What do you think?”
“You still have companions? Weren’t they back to the United States?” Pearl immediately understood what had happened, but she was powerless to stop it.
“They’re new companions! A beauty even prettier than you!” Ye Feng blew hot air into Pearl’s ear again.
“So what exactly do you want?” Pearl knew struggling was pointless. She decided to compromise, as her biggest bargaining chip was about to disappear.
“It’s simple—chat with me!” Ye Feng said with a smile.
“What do you want to know?” Pearl felt the pressure on her neck from Ye Feng’s left hand ease slightly.
“I want to know how many times you slept with this good-looking uncle before he became so devoted to you?” Ye Feng asked a sharp question.
“Not once!” Pearl didn’t avoid the question, but her answer was somewhat unexpected.
“Really, not once?” Ye Feng narrowed his eyes slightly, finding it hard to believe.
“No.” The deputy director also shook his head with a bitter smile.
“Then you abandoned your wife and children, gave up your future for this woman?” Ye Feng found it incomprehensible.
“I… I’m not married…” The deputy director hesitated for a moment before revealing the truth.
“Uncle, how old are you?” Ye Feng was speechless.
“Forty-three…” The deputy director replied shyly.
“Well, I guess your story is about a pure-hearted uncle who gets bewitched by a fox spirit. I can guess the ending too—the uncle dies from exhaustion, and the fox spirit moves on to find the next man…” Ye Feng offered a fable.
“Pearl isn’t the kind of woman you think she is… She’s just a bit pragmatic… But at heart, she’s still a good woman…” The deputy director shook his head with a bitter smile. “Over 80% of the money she earns each year is donated to orphans. In these past few years, she’s donated nearly five million dollars in total. Although that money isn’t clean, it has indeed helped many orphans a lot.”
“Alright, I admit I don’t know much about her. We’ve only met a few times, and I’ve never had anyone investigate her background because there was no need.” Hearing about her donations to orphans, Ye Feng loosened his grip slightly on Pearl’s neck.
He shook his head and pointed the gun at the deputy director. “But I want to know—do you know about all the secret dealings she’s involved in? Or are you her accomplice?”
“A person in your high position, if they commit a crime, it’s hard to imagine what kind of consequences that could bring. You have extensive knowledge and experience, a broad perspective, and good social connections. You can commit crimes without leaving a trace and get away with it. Tell me, should I just kill you now to avoid any problems down the road?” Ye Feng stared coldly at the deputy director.
“The biggest mistake I’ve made in my life was allowing Pearl to kidnap your classmate. But she assured me she would return your classmate safely to school—her target was only you!” The deputy director seemed helpless. “Listen, young man, after saving your classmate, leave right away. Stop killing more people—it’s meaningless.”
Ye Feng was clearly stunned when he heard the other man’s name. He had heard of Wei Baisong before. Back then, Ye Feng was still young, but he knew Wei Baisong was the head of the criminal investigation team, had solved many cases, and was a legendary figure—a police officer respected by the people. But Ye Feng didn’t know that this former hero had later risen to the position of deputy director—after all, many years had passed.
At that moment, the video system on the wall came back online. Ye Feng knew Long Yue and the others had completed their mission.
“For Brother Long’s sake, I should kill you. You’re the one who killed him!” Ye Feng put away his gun and pressed it against Pearl’s head.
“Don’t…” Wei Baisong’s face showed an almost pleading expression.
“For the orphans who have received your help, I might spare your life, but you must agree to one condition!” Ye Feng said coldly. “Leave this organization and disappear forever…”
“I can’t do that!” Pearl shook her head.
“That’s not a wise choice!” Ye Feng shook his head and placed his finger on the trigger.
“There are parasites in her body; everything she does is out of necessity… Please… don’t…” Wei Baisong knelt on the ground helplessly, pleading bitterly.
“Parasites?” Ye Feng narrowed his eyes slightly…
