Volume 1: Unsayable – Chapter 37: Good News Spreads
He followed the instructions, using the technique “Exporting the Original Spirit.” A tiny, invisible Wu Kong appeared in the air, while the Wu Kong on the ground stood there dumbfounded, motionless. He silently recited an incantation and used another technique, “Transforming the Body,” turning the Wu Kong on the ground into a wind-like figure. Though unable to walk or speak, it still stood there motionless.
The Wind Messenger said, “It’s not right. Since your original spirit has completely left, this physical body lacks a guiding core—how can it move? You must use the Spirit Division technique and try again!”
Wu Kong was astonished, “What is the Spirit Division technique?”
Tongtian was also stunned, “You don’t know the Spirit Division technique?”
Wu Kong shook his head, “My master never taught it to me.”
Tongtian laughed heartily, “Your master is truly interesting. He taught you so many advanced techniques yet neglected to teach you this simplest one.”
Wu Kong replied shyly, “Perhaps it’s too basic, so my master deemed it unworthy of instruction.”
Tongtian passed on the incantation for the Spirit Division technique to Wu Kong, saying, “Nine out of ten supernatural powers in the world are controlled through incantations. It’s still unknown where these incantations originated or who created them, but they work effectively for all living beings. Give it a try.”
Wu Kong tried again, and indeed, the other Wu Kong could speak, move, and use supernatural powers—just like himself, though slightly less skilled.
Tongtian added, “If you master these three techniques and combine them with magical power, your clone can also practice on your behalf.”
Wu Kong tried several times. This power was indeed fascinating—watching one self while another stood before him, looking at each other. It was a strange feeling he had never experienced before.
At that moment, Wu Kong had an idea. He plucked a handful of hairs, shouted “Transform,” and blew. Instantly, a hundred or so little monkeys leaped onto the ground, jumping around vividly.
The Wind Messenger’s eyes lit up as he praised, “What an excellent technique of integrating multiple powers!”
Wu Kong thought, “You’ve never read Journey to the West, so you don’t know—it’s the signature skill of the Great Monkey King.” Suddenly, he remembered that in Journey to the West, Wu Kong used his hairs to create monkeys when causing chaos in heaven. Then, where had he learned the Spirit Division technique? Upon further thought, perhaps it was included among the seventy-two transformations but not among the thirty-six.
Wu Kong said joyfully, “With this skill, it’s now possible to go down and save Wu Zhiqi.”
But the Wind Messenger immediately shook his head, “No need to rush.”
Wu Kong grew suspicious. The Wind Messenger had seemed pleased upon hearing that Wu Zhiqi was still alive—so why not go save him?
Tongfeng glanced at Wukong and said, “You think I’m not in a hurry? You must know that to destroy that ‘Ruyi Lock-Demon Rope,’ just the descendants of Dayu’s bloodline isn’t enough; we also need a method to melt those chains. I’ve been racking my brains these past few days with no results.”
Wukong asked, “All precious metals in the world are forged with fire—what’s the difficulty then?” He stretched out his palm, and a blue flame shot up instantly. “Can’t even the Three True Flames melt that damned chain?”
Tongfeng shook his head. “You still haven’t understood the meaning of the word ‘Ruyi.’ Though these Three True Flames are powerful, they might only be able to burn that rope thin and soft. As long as there’s a trace of connection left, it will instantly return to its original state—that’s what ‘Ruyi’ means.”
Wukong scratched his head. “Dayu really cheated people—why did he create something called ‘Ruyi’—” Suddenly, he realized that his own Golden Cudgel was also created by Dayu, known as the Ruyi Golden Cudgel. Could these two be made using the same method?
He immediately took out the Ruyi Golden Cudgel and waved it in the wind; its length changed by several feet. Upon seeing it, Tongfeng couldn’t take his eyes off it. Pointing at the cudgel, he asked Wukong, “Is this… is this Dayu’s Sea-Probing Divine Rod, also known as the Ruyi Golden Cudgel? Is it real?”
Wukong replied, “Weren’t you there to see it that day? Why do you ask again?”
Tongfeng said, “I didn’t see it clearly that day. I thought it was just an ordinary rod. Where did you get this Golden Cudgel?”
Wukong explained everything from start to finish. Tongfeng sighed and said, “I don’t know where you got such good fortune. Do you really think the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas are afraid of you? They rule the four seas and have countless strong soldiers under them. If they truly refuse, not to mention you, even if we joined forces with the Bull Demon King, we probably can’t take that cudgel away.”
Wukong was quite surprised and exclaimed, “With such great resources, why do the Dragon Kings act so timidly? What’s the reason?”
Tongfeng replied, “I don’t know the details, but don’t underestimate them.”
Wukong said, “Of course not. Look, this Golden Cudgel and that Ruyi Lock-Demon Rope are made of the same material.”
Tongfeng said, “If so, that makes sense. But it’s just a rare treasure. Without the method to melt it, we still can’t dissolve that Lock-Demon Rope. Only if you have a way to temper this Golden Cudgel can you succeed.”
Wukong laughed heartily. “Who says I don’t have a method?” He took out the “Qi Tian Cudgel Technique” from his bosom and said, “If you can read, take a look at this book.”
Tongfeng took the book and was overjoyed. “Though the characters are ancient, they’re no trouble for me. The first chapter talks about the method to melt Ruyi iron. It’s as if heaven is helping us—Zhi Qi will be saved!”
Wukong also said cheerfully, “If that’s the case, why don’t we head there right away?”
Tongfeng replied, “Of course. But with just the two of us, I’m afraid that Bodhisattva might have some deadly tricks up his sleeve. Moreover, this matter is highly confidential—we must never tell anyone else. What should we do?”
Wukong asked, “How many people are needed to ensure safety?”
Tongfeng said, “With our level of cultivation, one more person should be enough.”
Wukong smiled slightly and said, “I do know someone suitable, but not now. We’ll have to wait another six or seven years.”
Tongfeng was puzzled. “That person seems strange. Is he your confidant?”
Wukong laughed and said, “Not exactly. He belongs to our Golden Thread Monkey clan. I think he’s quite close to the Bull Demon King. Have you heard of the King of Yuyin?”
At the mention of “King of Yuyin,” Tongfeng trembled with excitement, his speech becoming slurred, and even the white hairs on his forehead stood on end. “You… what did you say? Yuyin, the King of Yuyin!”
Wukong also found it strange. The King of Yuyin was one of the Seven Great Saints—why was Tongfeng reacting like this? Suddenly, he had a logical guess.
“Even if it’s the King of Yuyin, so what?”
Tongfeng asked, “Do you know the King of Yuyin is said to appear only once every ten thousand years?” Wukong nodded.
Tongfeng continued, “In fact, it’s not even ten thousand years—it was thirty thousand years ago that the first King of Yuyin appeared. Since then, there have only been Yuyins, no King of Yuyin.”
Wukong asked, “Why is that? Could they be extinct?”
Tongfeng finally regained his composure and said, “That King of Yuyin from thirty thousand years ago was none other than the Divine Ape of Exorcism!”
Wukong was shocked. “The Divine Ape of Exorcism?”
Tongfeng nodded. “That’s right. Back then, the Divine Ape of Exorcism appeared in the guise of a Yuyin, creating the Yuyin clan. Later, he was defeated in a great battle and disappeared without a trace. Who would have thought he would reappear as the King of Yuyin in this life? Truly admirable.”
Wukong asked, “It’s said the Divine Ape of Exorcism has extraordinary powers. Why is he called that?”
Tongfeng replied, “His innate ability is to seize others’ magical treasures. When mastered to the extreme, not even one’s own life treasure can escape his grasp. Isn’t that amazing?”
Wukong stuck out his tongue and said, “That’s an extraordinary ability—truly amazing!”
Tongfeng said, “If he really is the Divine Ape of Exorcism, he will surely succeed this time. Haha, our Divine Ape clan may yet be revived.”
Wukong wondered, “There’s one thing I don’t understand. If our clan grows stronger, won’t that attract the persecution of immortals and demons? What should we do then?”
Tongfeng said, “I see that there are many forces in the immortal realm at present, each with its own ambitions. Moreover, my Seven Divine Apes are no longer what they used to be. If they fight alone in the future, with each having their own backing, it would likely lead to chaos in the world if they tried to eliminate one another as before.”
Wukong asked in confusion, “What do you mean by ‘each having their own backing’?”
Tongfeng glanced at Wukong and said, “Not to mention others, just take your master. Is he an ordinary immortal? He taught you martial arts. If you were in trouble, would he just stand by and do nothing?”
Wukong chuckled silently, thinking to himself, “You’re right. Back when I was trapped under the Five Elements Mountain, he didn’t even come to save me. My master is different from others. He only teaches me martial arts and lets me cause trouble, but he doesn’t care about burying the consequences.”
After mocking his master for a while, Wukong felt that Tongfeng’s words held deeper meaning. What did it mean by “my Seven Divine Apes each having their own backing”? Did he himself have some powerful ally?
Wukong asked tentatively, “How do you know that all the Seven Divine Apes have backers? Have you kept in touch with them all these years?”
Tongfeng replied, “I don’t know about the others, but I know that the Clever Divine Ape hasn’t yet completed his training. As for the Yin-Yang Divine Ape and the Arm-Through-Obstacles Divine Ape, according to my master, each of them has encountered certain circumstances. As for the details, I really don’t know.”
Wukong was greatly surprised. How could Tongfeng’s master, such a remarkable person, know so much about the whereabouts of the four great divine apes? If this person were hostile to the divine apes, wouldn’t he be a serious threat?
