Chapter 257: The Supreme Contract
Donald continued, “I hope to gain your loyalty and have you sign a contract to work for me!”
“Of course, I won’t ask for anything excessive. I only hope that when necessary—such as dealing with other totem gods—I can rely on you to follow my commands. Otherwise, you’ll be free most of the time, and I won’t force you to do things you don’t want to. Moreover, I can help you become stronger. The Crab God of Crab Island has already been defeated by us. Once you sign the contract, its territory and followers will belong to you!”
Iron Key God was utterly confused. He couldn’t understand why the other party wanted him to submit instead of simply taking over his divine status—wouldn’t it be better for him to become a god himself?
He didn’t realize that the Donalds were accustomed to the might and power of the true god churches in the main world. Even if their true forms couldn’t appear, the gods in the starry skies could still greatly influence the world’s balance. As such, they looked down on the confined and unfree totem gods. On the main world’s continents, even a legendary powerhouse lived a more carefree life than these totem gods—such beings were sought after by numerous factions. For them, the legendary realm was no longer out of reach but within easy grasp.
With examples like Carlisle, who had already reached the legendary realm, and Vincent, who was on the verge of doing so, both the Female Sword Saint and Donald were full of confidence. Donald’s ambitions went even further—he aimed not only for the legendary realm but also for demi-god status or higher.
These were merely low-ranking gods of the Totem Continent. Naturally, Iron Bell God, with his limited experience, had no idea of this.
“So? What do you think?”
Iron Rice God looked up at Donald’s clear eyes and felt that someone with such eyes couldn’t be that bad. At least serving him would likely preserve his dignity.
Although becoming someone else’s subordinate was unpleasant, it was far better than losing his divine status or even his life. And if he agreed now, he could immediately gain the territory and followers of his former neighbor, the Crab God. After assimilating those, his strength would surely increase significantly, perhaps even reaching the peak of gold rank.
Such an opportunity was hard to come by, and since he was under coercion, it made sense to choose the best option possible.
“Do I have any other choices?”
Donald smiled gently, and an unknown, peculiar text appeared before his eyes. Each character seemed to contain profound laws. Although Iron Bell God couldn’t understand a single word, when he focused his mind on the text, he naturally grasped its meaning.
“This…”
After seeing the terms of the contract, Iron Bell God hesitated. Even with his limited knowledge, he could tell that the rules within this contract were extremely rigorous, with no flaws to be found. Moreover, the responsibilities and obligations of both parties were relatively equal—it wasn’t a contract of absolute enslavement.
The reason was simple: the contract seemed far too grand and meticulous in his eyes.
Was it really necessary?
Though he didn’t know what the River of Fate was like, its name alone suggested it was a being beyond even gods. Swearing by the River of Fate, he, Iron Bell God, must remain eternally loyal to Donald, even Merlin herself. The contract would last until one of them perished—didn’t that mean he would have to serve the other forever if they achieved godhood?
He had originally thought serving for a few hundred years would be enough, a condition not unacceptable for a god with eternal life. But now, things were beyond his expectations.
“What’s wrong? Is there a problem?” Donald asked calmly, yet it put immense pressure on Iron Bell God.
When scanning Iron Bell God’s totem earlier, he had discovered that the god possessed rare divine seals related to navigation, seafaring, travel, and shipbuilding, along with incomplete seals in the fields of craftsmanship and water. Truly worthy of being a human totem god—aside from his combat prowess, his wisdom and comprehension far surpassed those of the non-human gods they had encountered.
The shipbuilding divine role was a secondary derivative of the craftsmanship divine role, a highly useful field, especially important for a human lord with territories along the coast. Craftsmanship itself was also one of the higher divine roles. Although its combat strength might be weaker, such a true god, if strengthened, could be extremely useful.
That’s why Donald planned to subdue Iron Bell God and train him. Who knew—perhaps in a hundred years, he might gain another demi-god subordinate!
That’s why he chose the most rigorous and unbreakable supreme contract described in the Book of Truth.
Only a covenant sworn to the eternal river of fate and the flow of time can be called a supreme covenant. Even those sworn to witnesses like the supreme gods can only be termed divine covenants. At the next level are plane covenants witnessed by the will of the world, which are more powerful than true god covenants within their own plane, but essentially become invalid outside that plane, thus leaving many loopholes for exploitation.
After weighing the consequences of signing or not, the Iron Pot God still left his soul imprint on the covenant. With that, he was bound to Donald’s cause and could no longer back out.
Satisfied, he also left his soul imprint on the covenant. Instantly, the text turned into light mist and disappeared, appearing above the heads of both parties to the covenant. Above their heads formed a stream of light that flowed toward some great existence unknown elsewhere.
Of course, only the parties to the covenant could faintly see this scene; others could not detect it. Donald, possessing higher divine vision granted by the Book of Truth, not only saw the process more clearly but could also glimpse through the light above their heads a river of endless brilliance wider than the ocean, seemingly on the other side of the universe! Though the vision was fleeting, Donald did not think what he saw was an illusion.
“Is this the river of fate?” he wondered inwardly. According to the Book of Truth, if one could break free from the bonds of fate, even an ordinary person could gain powers and eternity akin to those of a true god. Yet fate is supreme—even mighty supreme gods can only escape their own branches of fate, not the main stream of fate, let alone ordinary mortals!
“Now that the Iron Pot God is part of our family, there’s no need to hide things from him. We actually come from another world overseas, and our goal is to hunt down weaker totem gods and acquire their godly powers!”
“Next, we should consider how to take over Fish Island and destroy the Fish God and the Green Fish God!”
Hearing this, the Iron Pot God was both shocked and delighted. He was shocked by the origins of Donald and his companions, while delighted that they were ready to take on his long-time rival, the Fish God!
