Chapter 205: Earth Shaking Technique
After the simple welcome banquet, Donald did not go to the room prepared for him by Count Leighton. Instead, he joined them in the headquarters hall of the Leighton Port Garrison, located right next to the city walls.
Donald’s willingness to share hardships immediately won over the higher-ups in Leighton Port. After chatting idly for a while, soldiers came to report that there was activity at the harbor.
“Lord Baron! Everyone, let’s go up and take a look!”
Count Leighton gestured invitingly, and everyone, eager to learn the latest developments, climbed up onto the city walls of Leighton Port.
On top of the walls, they saw a row of soldiers on guard, while on the other side were some people in mismatched uniforms. Several mages were directing the soldiers from various battlements, busy with something. Laint, the commander of the garrison who had rushed back to the walls after a brief encounter earlier, was now staring solemnly toward the harbor.
“Laint, what’s the situation?”
“My lord, Lord Baron, and everyone else, the shallow waters around the port were calm before, but now tens of thousands of sea beasts have emerged from the water. They have already surrounded the entire port. Moreover, there are still waves coming from behind, so it’s unclear how many more sea beasts are approaching us!”
At this sight, everyone in Leighton Port looked worried. Count Leighton asked Donald, “Lord Baron, what do you think?”
Donald had far better eyesight than ordinary people and could see more than Silver Swordmaster Laint. He counted the sea beasts—there were well over tens of thousands of them, swarming like tadpoles, densely surrounding Leighton Port.
“I’m afraid there are more than tens of thousands of sea beasts. There are only two options we have right now. First, we strike first while they haven’t gathered in larger numbers, trying to reduce their strength as much as possible. Second, we buy time—unless the sea beasts attack first, we won’t retaliate, buying some time for reinforcements to arrive!”
After discussing this with the others, Count Leighton decided to choose the second option. After all, it was best for them not to start a battle to avoid damage to Leighton Port.
Although Donald was somewhat disappointed, he didn’t show it. If it were him, he might have already launched an attack. If they didn’t act now, the sheer number of sea beasts would overwhelm them once they gathered in greater numbers.
Turning to look at what the mages were busy with, Donald saw that they were devices similar to slingshots, except that instead of stones, these slingshots fired sealed pottery jars. Noticing Donald’s interest in these weapons, Count Leyton introduced them as “fire bombs designed by Master Bown, our chief mage in Port Leyton. When launched by a slingshot and subjected to intense impact, they explode and catch fire. The flames spread to the enemy and burn persistently, unable to be extinguished even by water! Unfortunately, due to limited materials, only just under two thousand fire bombs can be prepared; otherwise, these sea beasts could be dealt with largely just with these!”
Weren’t these just burn bombs from another world?
After hearing this, Donald nodded without saying much. For someone skilled in alchemy like him, such burn bombs were quite simple devices. With his knowledge of modern firearms from his past life, he could even make them better and more advanced. But even these simple burn bombs could be quite useful in this situation!
Meanwhile, the older mage among them, dressed the most extravagantly, couldn’t help but snort coldly at Donald at this sight.
These fire bombs were his proudest invention. In the past, everyone who heard about them would praise them highly. Yet now, this young mage merely nodded dismissively. In his eyes, it was clear that the young man looked down on him as the chief mage of Port Leyton.
Count Ryan awkwardly explained from the side, “That one is Master Bown, our chief mage in Port Leyton. Master Bown has a rather stern temper. I hope you won’t mind, Baron.”
Donald naturally wouldn’t mind. He didn’t have the energy to deal with others.
Bown cast a disdainful glance at such a young mage as Donald. Although the latter was hailed as the greatest genius mage in Celt and bore titles like Kingdom Hero and the youngest Bronze Mage, to Bown, he was just a young mage who had become arrogant after achieving some success.
But after that casual glance, Bown suddenly froze, then stared at Donald in disbelief, his eyes wide open.
“What?!”
It took a long time before Mage Bown could catch his breath and asked uncertainly, “Have you advanced to Silver?”
At these words, everyone present took a sharp breath.
Advanced to Silver?
Not long ago, the news of this young mage advancing to bronze rank shocked the entire elite class of Celt. Now, a silver mage under twenty years old—such a genius has never appeared even in a mage kingdom like the one ruled by Princess Lin!
“It’s just that I’ve just advanced!”
In response to the astonishment of those present, Donald simply nodded calmly and said that.
Having reached a certain level, praise and awe from others had less and less impact on him. He was no longer the young mage who would get carried away with a few compliments; instead, he was a silver mage with enough strength to influence regional situations.
“That’s great! Lord Baron has advanced to Silver Master—our strength has grown even more!”
Count Leighton rejoiced. Among everyone here, he was the happiest about Donald becoming a silver mage.
Donald saw no reason for celebration; it was just a natural outcome. After all, advancing to gold rank was merely a matter of time for him—a trivial task.
At that moment, he frowned slightly as he watched more and more dark shapes appearing in the water near the port ahead.
There was about two kilometers between the port and the city walls. In the past, this area had been used as a loading site for ships in Leighton Port, and later it developed into a free trade zone. The terrain here was too flat, with no defensive fortifications. If sea beasts launched an attack, they could easily reach the city.
So he asked the mages present, “Is there anyone among you who knows Earth Shaking Spell?”
The mages in Leighton Port exchanged glances upon hearing this. Among them were three silver mages, with the rest being strong bronze mages. However, although Earth Shaking Spell was only a level six spell, its difficulty in casting was higher than that of level seven single-target spells. Thus, only two mages had learned it—one was the chief mage, Bowen, and the other was a high-level bronze mage who had barely mastered it, likely unable to exert much effect due to insufficient magic power.
“Only two? That’s about it then!”
Muttering to himself, Donald said to the two mages, “The terrain here is too flat. I plan to combine our efforts to cast Earth Shaking Spell and create another defensive barrier above the port. Do either of you have any objections?”
Frightened by Donald’s presence, the bronze mage replied uneasily, “I… I might not have enough magic power to shape it…”
Before he could finish speaking, Donald handed him an item and a crystal bottle.
“This is an energy pendant that can enhance magic power, along with potions to replenish it. Return them to me after use—it should be enough for you to cast the Earthquake spell! I’ll handle the center, while you two take care of the left and right. Get ready!” Without paying attention to the others, he headed straight to the front of the city wall to prepare casting the spell.
Although Chief Mage Bowen didn’t like following Donald’s orders, this method could indeed greatly enhance the defenses of Port Leyton. Thus, under the eager gaze of Count Leyton and with a sigh of reluctance, he joined the other mage on top of the wall, positioning themselves a few hundred feet apart on Donald’s left and right sides to prepare the Earthquake spell.
The Earthquake spell was a level-6 strategic spell that required significantly more magic power than ordinary level-7 spells, mainly because it relied on the caster’s will to manipulate the earth’s structure, consuming most of the magic power in that process. This spell could alter the terrain of an area spanning hundreds of square meters, creating trenches or even hills over a hundred feet high. However, for each area affected, an ordinary mage needed at least ten minutes of preparation and casting time, with larger areas requiring even more time to reshape.
Under the watchful eyes of everyone on the wall, Donald suddenly opened his eyes. “Are you ready?”
Seeing Bowen and the other bronze mage nod, Donald shouted, “Start!”
Suddenly, a tremor arose in the central area of the port, hundreds of meters away from the city wall. Amidst a rumbling sound, a mound of earth and stones hundreds of meters long and several feet wide rose slowly upward. Within just a few minutes, it had grown into a earthen wall hundreds of meters long, over ten feet high, and seven to eight feet thick, spanning the center of the port area. On either side of this main wall, two more walls rose—one slightly shorter than the first, with similar height and thickness, while the other was inferior, being only half as long and with less thickness and height.
These three connected walls formed a defense barrier over a kilometer long, covering nearly half of the port area in front of Port Leyton. Along with the walls, a trench of equal length and depth appeared in front of them, with the soil for the walls being taken from this trench.
Of course, aside from the three casters, no one on the wall could see the trench in front.
Seeing such a long wall rise, greatly enhancing Port Leyton’s defenses, everyone on the wall, including the nobles, cheered just like the ordinary soldiers.
This was Donald’s defense plan: first, use ditches to trap some sea beasts, then employ earth walls as a second line of defense, and finally, the city walls of Port Leyton. With the first two lines of defense in place, the impact force of the sea beasts would surely be greatly reduced, allowing the city walls, which were better protected, to eliminate more of them. Yet this was not yet the entirety of Donald’s plan. He asked the magi again, “Who among you masters the art of turning mud into stone?” This time, aside from a newly promoted Bronze Mage, all six other magi stepped forward.
