Chapter 119: An Island Overseas – Mistaken for Demonic Fishermen, They Scatter
Liu Yi had already reached the skies above the Northern Sea. A slight salty breeze blew, and under the sunlight, he flew swiftly like a falling meteor across the endless ocean. From high above, gazing at the boundless sea below, Liu Yi instantly felt his own insignificance…
It was already noon. He had been in the Northern Sea for most of the day. According to the Wolf King, by flying straight north once he arrived here, he should be able to see another continent. On that continent, there were volcanoes that spewed fire, and it was within those mountains that the “Heavenly Essence Ore” could be found. Though Liu Yi wasn’t sure if such ore existed in the mountains to the north, he still decided to give it a try.
Finally, as he continued to fly swiftly, a new continent appeared before his eyes. From afar, it resembled a small island. But as Liu Yi approached slowly, he realized it wasn’t a small island at all—it was actually very large. The distance earlier had made it seem like just a small island. Now that he was closer, he could see how vast the continent was.
As the distance shortened, Liu Yi noticed fishermen by the sea, along with many houses behind the beach. These houses were supported by tall pillars, likely to prevent them from being flooded during high tides. Upon closer inspection, the fishermen’s attire didn’t resemble that of the people on his own continent. They wore simple shirts and pants but were barefoot. Liu Yi leaped onto the beach, sheathed “Sorrowful Dream” effortlessly, and continued to hold the sword hilt in his left hand, maintaining his usual stance.
When the fishermen saw Liu Yi suddenly appear on the beach from the sea, they all dropped what they were doing and ran inside their houses, as if they had encountered a monster. Liu Yi watched them and hurried after them, as he still needed to ask where the volcanoes were.
It wasn’t surprising. They had never seen Liu Yi’s attire before, and he wore a mask covering his face, leaving only his eyes visible. Moreover, his hair was completely white. To these fishermen, Liu Yi must have seemed like a strange person.
Liu Yi walked inside, but all the doors were tightly closed. It seemed the people here truly regarded him as a monster. As he moved further in, he realized this was actually a fishing village. The few houses ahead must be the village entrance. Looking further in, there were quite a number of houses.
But trouble arose. Hundreds of people in the village ran into their houses upon seeing Liu Yi appear. Liu Yi looked at himself from head to toe—his attire was just different. Was that really so terrifying? If so, with such a vast continent, how could he find any information and where should he look?
Just as Liu Yi was thinking of a solution, a little girl approached. Her long hair was tied into two sections, hanging down like scarves on either side. She had big, innocent eyes and a dark complexion, likely from spending time in the sun. She wore clean pink clothes and a silver collar around her neck. She appeared to be around ten years old and looked extremely cute.
The little girl walked over and said, “Big brother, did you come from across the sea?”
Liu Yi took off the black long sword from his waist, gently leaned it against a thick tree, and sat down. He said, “Yes. Everyone is very afraid of big brothers. Do you know why?”
The little girl looked at Liu Yi and said, “The village chief said that outsiders are all monsters. No one in the village should provoke them or talk to them.”
Liu Yi looked at the cute little girl and felt as if he had suddenly become much younger, returning to the appearance of a scholar from ten years ago. He said, “Then aren’t you afraid of big brothers?”
The little girl shook her head and said innocently, “Big brothers are just like us. Of course I’m not afraid.”
Liu Yi nodded and said, “Don’t worry, little sister. As long as big brother is here, no monster will dare to come. I’ll kill all the monsters.”
The little girl nodded happily and said, “That’s great. My little sister was captured by those monsters and hasn’t come back yet. It would be wonderful if big brother could kill those monsters. Then we wouldn’t have to be afraid anymore.” Remembering the sad event, the little girl seemed a bit sad.
Liu Yi looked around. In front was an endless sea, and behind him, he wasn’t sure whether it was a continent or an island. Since he had arrived directly and hadn’t observed carefully, and he couldn’t ask anyone now either, but from what the little girl said, it seemed there really were some terrifying things here.
Liu Yi sheathed his sword and stretched out his hands covered in black gloves. He said, “Come here, little girl. Big brother will hug you.”
The little girl walked over, and Liu Yi picked her up. He then asked, “Do you know what place this is? Is it an island or a vast land with no end?”
The little girl smiled innocently and said, “Big brother, you really are from outside. This is a small island. We often go to the big city behind to sell fish. But these days, monsters have appeared on the island, so no one dares to go around. We’ve run out of supplies and can only catch fish to eat every day.”
Liu Yi nodded gently and asked, “Do you know if there are any volcanoes here that can spew fire?”
The little girl replied immediately, “Yes, there is one right behind our village. That mountain often spews fireballs, but no one can enter it.”
Liu Yi asked curiously, “Why?”
The little girl continued, “I don’t know either. My mother said that even more terrifying demons live inside, and once you go in, you can never come out.”
Liu Yi’s curiosity was piqued. This island didn’t seem very peaceful, and that fire-spewing mountain was right here, suggesting there might be even more terrifying things inside. This was expected— the Wolf King had also said that danger existed in these places. But Liu Yi hadn’t expected that people could still survive amidst such danger. What did that imply?
While Liu Yi was holding the little girl and thinking about these things, a loud voice came from afar, saying, “Monster! Put down Xiao Lan quickly, or we’ll fight you!”
Liu Yi returned to reality from his thoughts and looked across. The people on the other side were the fishermen who had scattered earlier, but now they were holding long swords and knives instead of fishing nets and hooks. Estimating their numbers, there were at least a hundred of them. Years of exposure to the sun and wind had darkened their skin, making them appear very strong. It seemed these people truly mistook him for someone else. Could it be that the monster looked like him? Yes… it might have taken on human form.
Liu Yi gently set the little girl down and asked, “Is your name Xiao Lan?”
The little girl nodded and said, “That man over there is my father. He’s a very good person. It’s he who leads everyone to fight against the monsters. But the monsters are too strong; they capture people from the village every time they come.”
Liu Yi nodded and said, “Go back quickly. Your father must be extremely worried.” Looking at the man in his early forties, Liu Yi pondered a question: If Jili’er were here, the two of them would probably have a child of this age by now. But if they really encountered some monster or beast, what could he do ten years ago to protect his family?
These random thoughts made Liu Yi feel an extra sense of goodwill toward the man…
